    One-sided smoothness-increasing accuracy-conserving filtering for enhanced streamline integration through discontinuous fields

    The discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method continues to maintain heightened levels of interest within the simulation community because of the discretization flexibility it provides. One of the fundamental properties of the DG methodology and arguably its most powerful property is the ability to combine high-order discretizations on an inter-element level while allowing discontinuities between elements. This flexibility, however, generates a plethora of difficulties when one attempts to use DG fields for feature extraction and visualization, as most post-processing schemes are not designed for handling explicitly discontinuous fields. This work introduces a new method of applying smoothness-increasing, accuracy-conserving filtering on discontinuous Galerkin vector fields for the purpose of enhancing streamline integration. The filtering discussed in this paper enhances the smoothness of the field and eliminates the discontinuity between elements, thus resulting in more accurate streamlines. Furthermore, as a means of minimizing the computational cost of the method, the filtering is done in a one-dimensional manner along the streamline.United States. Army Research Office (Grant no.     Resilience characteristics of the urban agriculture system in Lansing, Michigan: Importance of support actors in local food systems

    Urban agriculture is a growing movement in cities across the United States, including the post-industrial Midwest. Maintaining a resilient local food system is a challenge given the environmental, resource, and institutional barriers facing urban farmers. In this descriptive correlational study, we take an in-depth look at the demographics, farm characteristics, motivations, barriers, and resilience indicators of individuals in the urban agriculture system in Lansing, Michigan, a city of the US Midwest with a growing urban agriculture system. Survey responses (n = 92) revealed that support actors, community gardeners, and farmers have descriptive differences in their motivations, with support actors (e.g. non-profits, university extension, or municipalities) being most strongly motivated by social and environmental justice. Community gardeners reported the lowest barriers to engaging in urban agriculture. Individuals who reported stronger motivations for building community and social and environmental justice showed significant correlations to several resilience indicators, indicating that those motivations may be important to system resilience. Urban agriculture support agencies report high barriers and are most often consulted for informational and social support. These results can inform recommendations for organizations, local governments, and researchers working in midwestern urban agriculture initiatives to better assess and promote a thriving system into the futur

    On the Treatment of Field Quantities and Elemental Continuity in FEM Solutions

    As the finite element method (FEM) and the finite volume method (FVM), both traditional and high-order variants, continue their proliferation into various applied engineering disciplines, it is important that the visualization techniques and corresponding data analysis tools that act on the results produced by these methods faithfully represent the underlying data. To state this in another way: the interpretation of data generated by simulation needs to be consistent with the numerical schemes that underpin the specific solver technology. As the verifiable visualization literature has demonstrated: visual artifacts produced by the introduction of either explicit or implicit data transformations, such as data resampling, can sometimes distort or even obfuscate key scientific features in the data. In this paper, we focus on the handling of elemental continuity, which is often only C0 continuous or piecewise discontinuous, when visualizing primary or derived fields from FEM or FVM simulations. We demonstrate that traditional data handling and visualization of these fields introduce visual errors. In addition, we show how the use of the recently proposed line-SIAC filter provides a way of handling elemental continuity issues in an accuracy-conserving manner with the added benefit of casting the data in a smooth context even if the representation is element discontinuous

    Multi-dimensional filtering: Reducing the dimension through rotation

    Over the past few decades there has been a strong effort towards the development of Smoothness-Increasing Accuracy-Conserving (SIAC) filters for Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods, designed to increase the smoothness and improve the convergence rate of the DG solution through this post-processor. These advantages can be exploited during flow visualization, for example by applying the SIAC filter to the DG data before streamline computations [Steffan et al., IEEE-TVCG 14(3): 680-692]. However, introducing these filters in engineering applications can be challenging since a tensor product filter grows in support size as the field dimension increases, becoming computationally expensive. As an alternative, [Walfisch et al., JOMP 38(2);164-184] proposed a univariate filter implemented along the streamline curves. Until now, this technique remained a numerical experiment. In this paper we introduce the line SIAC filter and explore how the orientation, structure and filter size affect the order of accuracy and global errors. We present theoretical error estimates showing how line filtering preserves the properties of traditional tensor product filtering, including smoothness and improvement in the convergence rate. Furthermore, numerical experiments are included, exhibiting how these filters achieve the same accuracy at significantly lower computational costs, becoming an attractive tool for the scientific visualization community

    Using Design Experiments to Investigate Long-Term Program Success

    ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to track teachers using Astronomy Village Âź over two school years. Prior research indicated that teachers were successful with the students when they enjoyed extensive support from the project developers. What would happen when the project support was no longer available? Would their students be as successful? Would the teachers continue to implement the program in ways consistent with the developers' intentions? This study used a hybrid experimental design that combined quasi-experimentation and design experiments. The experimental designs were supported by statistical analyses using the Linear Logistic Model for Change. The results indicate that teachers made significant adaptations to their implementation. These implementations were all consistent with the intent of the curriculum designers. An analysis of the learning outcomes indicates that students in the second implementation year achieved greater learning outcomes than students in the first implementation year. Researchers will continue to monitor the progress of these teachers during a third implementation year

    The SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline. V. Estimation of Alpha-Element Abundance Ratios From Low-Resolution SDSS/SEGUE Stellar Spectra

    We present a method for the determination of [alpha/Fe] ratios from low-resolution (R = 2000) SDSS/SEGUE stellar spectra. By means of a star-by-star comparison with degraded spectra from the ELODIE spectral library and with a set of moderately high-resolution (R = 15,000) and medium-resolution (R = 6000) spectra of SDSS/SEGUE stars, we demonstrate that we are able to measure [alpha/Fe] from SDSS/SEGUE spectra (with S/N > 20/1) to a precision of better than 0.1 dex, for stars with atmospheric parameters in the range Teff = [4500, 7000] K, log g = [1.5, 5.0], and [Fe/H] = [-1.4, +0.3], over the range [alpha/Fe] = [-0.1, +0.6]. For stars with [Fe/H] < -1.4, our method requires spectra with slightly higher signal-to-noise to achieve this precision (S/N > 25/1). Over the full temperature range considered, the lowest metallicity star for which a confident estimate of [alpha/Fe] can be obtained from our approach is [Fe/H] ~ -2.5; preliminary tests indicate that a metallicity limit as low as [Fe/H] ~ -3.0 may apply to cooler stars. As a further validation of this approach, weighted averages of [alpha/Fe] obtained for SEGUE spectra of likely member stars of Galactic globular clusters (M15, M13, and M71) and open clusters (NGC 2420, M67, and NGC 6791) exhibit good agreement with the values of [alpha/Fe] from previous studies.     The [Fe/H], [C/Fe], and [alpha/Fe] distributions of the Bootes I Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

    We present the results of a low-resolution spectral abundance study of 25 stars in the Bootes I dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy. The data were obtained with the LRIS instrument at Keck Observatory, and allow us to measure [Fe/H], [C/Fe], and [alpha/Fe] for each star. We find both a large spread in metallicity (2.1 dex in [Fe/H]) as well as the low average metallicity in this system, =-2.59, matching previous estimates. This sample includes a newly discovered extremely metal-poor star, with [Fe/H]=-3.8, that is one of the most metal-poor stars yet found in a dSph. We compare the metallicity distribution function of Bootes I to analytic chemical evolution models. While the metallicity distribution function of Bootes I is best fit by an Extra Gas chemical evolution model, leaky-box models also provide reasonable fits. We also find that the [alpha/Fe] distribution and the carbon-enhanced metal-poor fraction of our sample (12%) are reasonable matches to Galactic halo star samples in the same metallicity range, indicating that at these low metallicities, systems like the Bootes I ultra-faint dSph could have been contributors to the Galactic halo.Comment: ApJ, accepted. 10 pages, in emulate apj forma

    Measuring automatic retrieval: A comparison of implicit memory, process dissociation, and speeded response procedures

    Abstract Using the stem completion task, we compared estimates of automatic retrieval from an implicit memory task, the process dissociation procedure, and the speeded response procedure. Two standard manipulations were employed. In Experiment 1, a depth of processing effect was found on automatic retrieval using the speeded response procedure although this effect was substantially reduced in Experiment 2 when lexical processing was required of all words. In Experiment 3, the speeded response procedure showed an advantage of full versus divided attention at study on automatic retrieval. An implicit condition showed parallel effects in each study, suggesting that implicit stem completion may normally provide a good estimate of automatic retrieval. Also, we replicated earlier findings from the process dissociation procedure, but estimates of automatic retrieval from this procedure were consistently lower than those from the speeded response procedure, except when conscious retrieval was relatively low. We discuss several factors that may contribute to the conflicting outcomes, including the evidence for theoretical assumptions and criterial task differences between implicit and explicit tests

    Corporal Punishment of Children in Nine Countries as a Function of Child Gender and Parent Gender

    Background. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a global perspective on corporal punishment by examining differences between mothers' and fathers' use of corporal punishment with daughters and sons in nine countries. Methods. Interviews were conducted with 1398 mothers, 1146 fathers, and 1417 children (age range = 7 to 10 years) in China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States. Results. Across the entire sample, 54% of girls and 58% of boys had experienced mild corporal punishment, and 13% of girls and 14% of boys had experienced severe corporal punishment by their parents or someone in their household in the last month. Seventeen percent of parents believed that the use of corporal punishment was necessary to rear the target child. Overall, boys were more frequently punished corporally than were girls, and mothers used corporal punishment more frequently than did fathers. There were significant differences across countries, with reports of corporal punishment use lowest in Sweden and highest in Kenya. Conclusion. This work establishes that the use of corporal punishment is widespread, and efforts to prevent corporal punishment from escalating into physical abuse should be commensurately widespread
