KOTAMO : Report on the state of equality and diversity in Finnish higher education institutions

The objective of the KOTAMO project (2021–22) has been to examine the state of equality, non-discrimination and diversity among teaching and research staff in Finnish higher education institutions and to propose recommendations for measures to address the problems identified. The study focused on gender equality and ethnic diversity. The report is based on a literature review, a survey addressed to higher education personnel, interviews with personnel and workshops held with personnel and financiers. The project was funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture and implemented by Demos Helsinki, Oxford Research, Includia Leadership, Innolink, Inkeri Tanhua (Equality Research Helsinki), Liisa Husu and Kaskas. The report showed that Finnish higher education institutions still have a great deal of work to do in promoting gender equality and ethnic diversity and that they need support in this work. The main challenges are related to the inadequate implementation of equality and non-discrimination plans, the relatively low number of women and ethnic minorities at the highest career stages in universities, non-transparent recruitment processes, poorer career development among ethnic minorities (when compared to the majority population), discrimination experienced by these minorities, and a non-inclusive working culture. Promoting equality and diversity requires actions, support for higher education institutions and more research.The conclusions and recommendations are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Ministry of Education and Culture

In Pursuit of Inclusive and Diverse Digital Futures : Exploring the Potential of Design Fiction in Education of Children

2020 marks the beginning of a new era as the pandemic catapulted us into new digital and virtual ways of everyday life. As the world changes, we reimagine empowering, equitable, accessible, diverse, and inclusive digital futures, through a series of projects and workshops with a diverse set of participants - children in schools and Child Computer Interaction researchers. We conducted one long-term project with two schools in Finland and two one-day workshops with an international set of participants. Through an analysis of participants’ experiences and outcomes in the project and workshops, we build a case for diversity and inclusion through design fiction in the context of children’s education. In addition, through an analysis of the process we as researchers took for developing the project and workshops, we showcase the support of diversity and inclusion in design fiction.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

Houreita huutavan hullun : Esseistisiä pohdintoja musiikin ja tunteiden suhteesta

Musiikin ja tunteiden suhteista ei ole saatu kunnollista otetta, sillä kuten jokainen tietää: tunteet voi vain tuntea. Musiikin tunneilmaisua on tutkimuksissa tarkasteltu enimmäkseen kuulijoiden arviointeihin perustuen. Opinnäytetyössäni pohdin esseistisesti musiikin ja tunteiden suhteita subjektiivisesta näkökulmasta esittäjänä, laulajana, runoilijana, kuuntelijana ja kokijana. Olen pohtinut laajalti taiteen vastaanottokokemuksia toisen ammattini myötä, ja kirjallisuuden pro gradu -työni vuodelta 2010 käsitteli viihdetekstin vastaanoton luentoja. Tämä artikkelimuotoinen opin-näytetyö koostuu sanomalehti Kalevassa vuosina 2011–2014 julkaistuista esseistä, joista olen muodostanut uuden kokonaisuuden lisäten mukaan myös uutta tekstiä. En pyri työssäni ottamaan haltuun musiikin ja tunteiden suhdetta kokonaan sen moni-ilmeisyyden vuoksi – tehtävä on aivan liian laaja yhteen opinnäytetyöhön. Olen halunnut tekstin edetessä miettiä, millaisia musiikille ominaiset tunteet ovat, mistä ne syntyvät, miten tunteet koetaan, ja eritoten, miksi niitä koetaan. Pohdin myös sitä, millaiset tekijät vaikuttavat tunteiden syn-tymiseen. Mitä on tuntea tehdessä ja kuunnellessa musiikkia? Kysyn näitä kysymyksiä sekä itseltäni että alan ammattilaisilta, sekä tutkijoilta että taiteilijoilta. Ensimmäisessä luvussa pysyttelen taiteen ja tunteen teorioissa sekä taiteenfilosofisissa pohdinnoissa. Lyhyen osansa saavat myös psykoanalyysin ja psykologian näkökulmat. Luku on omistettu aisteille, musiikin fysiologiallekin, ja se pohtii, miten musiikki vaikuttaa meihin. Toisessa luvussa roolin ottavat merkittävät miehet, jotka ovat herättäneet – syystä tai toisesta – tunteeni. Luku on teoksen subjektiivisinta antia, sillä asetan itseni koekaniiniksi ja avaan omia tunnekokemuksiani. Kolmas osio rakentuu löyhästi jo kirjallisuuden pro gradu -työssäni kehittelemäni dialoginen tunneverkko -käsitteen varaan. Pohdin, miten tuo tunteellinen verkko muodostuu ja keitä siihen kuuluu. Käsittelen myös sitä, miltä tuohon tunneverkkoon kuuluminen tuntuu. Opinnäytetyössäni päädyin samoille alueille kuin edellisessä tutkimuksessani, yleisön ja tekstin väliseen tunnevaihtoon ja merkitysten verkostoon. Työni revähti filosofisiin ja psykologisiin sfääreihin palatakseen taas muusikon työn konkreettisiin ulottuvuuksiin. Pohdintani, jos mitkä, ovat paljastaneet nimenomaan musiikin monipuolisen tavan koskettaa ihmistä. Tunteet kuuluvat musiikkiin vastaansanomattomalla tavalla. Ne mahdollistavat sielujen kohtaamisen ja antavat meille hetken ikuisuutta.Music and emotions has been for long almost too difficult for researchers, since everyone knows: emotions can only be felt. Emotional expression in music has been studied mainly based on the evaluations of listeners. In this thesis it is pondered in an essayistic and subjective manner the relationship between music and emotions as a performer, singer, poet, listener and as a live wit-ness. Through my other profession as a writer I have been considering vastly different responses to art, and in fact, my master’s thesis in 2010 focused on the reception of popular fiction. The foundation of this article form thesis lays on the essays written to the newspaper Kaleva, and thus, most of the texts have been published in years 2011–2014. The aim of this thesis is not to take over all that exists between music and emotions – one finds that task too vast for a single thesis. Along my text I have wanted to wonder, what are the emotions in music like, where are they born, how they are felt, and mainly: why they are felt. It is also pondered what are the hidden factors in the birth of musical emotions. For the most part it is asked: what is to feel while making and listening to music? These questions are not only asked by myself but also by music professionals, reseachers and artists. In the first chapter I remain in the theories of art and emotion, but it expands towards art phi-losophy, psychoanalysis and psychology. This chapter is dedicated to senses, music physiology, too, and how music affects us. In the second part, the stage is given to men who have triggered my interest and emotions in one way or another. This chapter is the subjective core of the thesis, since I set myself as a guinea pig and open my own emotional responses. The third part is loose-ly based on the term of dialogical emotional net, a term developed in my master’s thesis a couple of years ago. In this part it is pondered how emotional net works in music and who participates in it. Because this work is subjective, it is also processed how it feels to belong to this emotional net. I ended up near the same peripheries as in my previous study: to the emotional change be-tween the text and audience, to the network of meanings. My thesis almost exploded to philo-sophical and psychological spheres just to return to the realms of concrecy in a musician’s every-day life. These thoughts if any have revealed that music has multiple ways to meet people. Emo-tions belong to music in a disputable way. They enable the meeting of souls, they give us a mo-ment of eternity

Vanhempien kokemuksia sosiaalis-emotionaalista tukea tarvitsevien lasten päivähoidon erityisryhmästä

Tavoitteena on kehittää erityisryhmän toimintaa tuomalla esille vanhempien kokemuksia toteutuneesta toiminnasta. Tarkastelemme varhaiserityiskasvatusta ekokulttuurisen teorian näkökulmasta ja kasvatuskumppanuuden merkitystä erityistä tukea tarvitsevien lasten vanhemmille. Opinnäytetyömme on laadullinen tutkimus. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytimme avointa haastattelua. Tutkimukseemme osallistui kolme vanhempaa. Aineistomme analyysimenetelmänä käytimme aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysiä. Tutkimustulostemme mukaan vanhemmat olivat pääosin tyytyväisiä lapsensa päivähoitoryhmään. Vanhemmat pitivät tärkeänä luottamuksellista suhdetta työntekijöihin, ja se nähtiin edellytyksenä kasvatuskumppanuudelle. Vanhemmat olivat tyytyväisiä yhteistyöhön työntekijöiden kanssa. He korostivat päiväkodin ja kodin yhtenäisten toimintatapojen merkitystä lapsen kehityksen kannalta. Ryhmän pieni koko mahdollisti lapsen yksilöllisen huomioon ottamisen. Vanhemmat toivoivat, että saisivat enemmän tietoa ryhmässä käytettävistä menetelmistä, ja että työntekijät kertoisivat heille enemmän lapsensa päiväkotipäivästä. Esiin nousi toive myös vertaistoiminnasta muiden ryhmän vanhempien kanssa. Vanhempien mukaan heidän lapsensa olivat kehittyneet nimenomaan erityisryhmään siirtymisen jälkeen. Tämä osoittaa, että erityisryhmä voi olla joidenkin lasten kohdalla parempi päivähoitopaikka erityistä tukea tarvitsevalle lapselle kuin tavallinen päiväkotiryhmä. Tutkimustuloksiamme voidaan hyödyntää kehitettäessä päiväkodin erityisryhmän toimintaa sekä yleisesti varhaiskasvatusta. Our aim was to develop the group activities by studying parents’ experiences of the activities. Our thesis was a qualitative study. We interviewed three parents and analyzed the data with the data-driven content analysis. We reviewed early childhood education from the perspective of ecocultural theory and the purpose of ECEC partnership in children’s daycare. The results showed that parents were mostly satisfied with their children’s kindergarten group. The parents thought that it was important to have a loyal relationship with the employees. Parents were satisfied with the cooperation with them. They stressed that the kindergarten and home have consistent methods in terms of the importance of child development. The small size of the group made it possible to take the individual child into account. Parents required the employees to give more information about the methods used. They required that the employees would tell them more about their child’s kindergarten day. They also hoped that the employees would organize peer activities with other parents. Parents said that their children had developed after the transition to the special group. This indicates that a special group can be better for some children with special needs than an ordinary day-care group. The results of this thesis can be used when the kindergarten special group and also early childhood education in general are developed

Turvallinen lääkehoito epäsäännöllisessä ja korkean riskin synnytyksessä

Opinnäytetyömme tavoitteena oli tehdä kattava kirjallisuus katsaus turvallisesta lääkehoidosta epäsäännöllisessä ja korkean riskin synnytyksessä. Toiminnallisen opinnäytetyömme tuotoksena koostimme Tampereen Ammattikorkeakoulun kätilöopiskelijoille lääkehoidon matriisin teoria pohjamme perusteella. Opinnäyteyömme teoreettisena viitekehyksenä ja lähtökohtana toimi Oili Veräjänkorvan tutkimus sairaanhoitajien lääkehoitotaidoista. Matriisin on tarkoitus syventää opiskelijoiden lääkehoidon osaamista. Ongelmana työssämme oli lääkehoitoon liittyvän tiedon ja hoitokäytänteiden jatkuva muuttuminen. Opinnäytetyömme on osa sarjaa turvallinen lääkehoito kätilötyössä. Menetelmänä tiedon etsimisessä käytimme kirjallisuus katsausta. Perehdyimme kotimaiseen ja ulkomaalaiseen tuoreimpaan teoria tietoon lääkehoidoista epäsäännöllisessä ja korkean riskin synnytyksessä. Rajasimme teorian koskemaan vain niitä epäsäännöllisiä ja korkean riskin synnytyksiä joissa turvallisella lääkehoidolla on tärkeä rooli. Käsittelimme teoria osuudessa esimerkiksi turvallisen lääkehoidon toteuttamista sektiosynnytyksessä, pre-eklampsia synnytyksessä ja korionamnioniitissä. Onnistuimme koostamaan teoria pohjamme perusteella toimivan lääkehoidon matriisin kätilöopiskelijoille. Matriisia voivat myös opettajat käyttää apuna lääkehoidon opetuksessa. Opinnäytetyömme teoria osuus käsittelee kattavasti lääkehoidon turvallisuutta epäsäännöllisessä ja korkean riskin synnytyksessä. Opinnäytetyömme teorian pohjalta opiskelija saa perustiedon lääkehoidon turvallisesta toteuttamisesta, mitä hän voi syventää matriisimme avulla.The purpose of this thesis was to do comprehensive review on safe drug therapy in high risk childbirth. As a product of our work a matrix was provided for midwife students at Tampere University of Applied Sciences. The theoretical frame work of this thesis is based on Oili Veräjänkorva’s study on nurses’ knowledge about drug therapy. The purpose of the matrix is to deepen midwifery students’ knowledge about drug therapy. The main problem in our thesis was that the knowledge of drug therapy and the clinical practice is continuously changing. This thesis is a part of series on safe drug therapy in midwifery. The data of the study were gathered by reviewing Finnish and English literature on safe drug therapy. We delimited our work on those childbirths requiring drug therapy. The theoretical part of the study presents information on safe drug therapy for example in caesarean section, in pre-eclampsy and in chorionamnionitis. We were able to compile a matrix on safe drug therapy on the bases of our theoretical framework. The matrix is aimed for the midwife students and teachers alike. The teachers can also use this matrix as help in their teaching. The theoretical part offers basic information on safe drug therapy in high risk child-birth. This information can then be deepened by completing the matrix provided
