    Bayesian Analysis of Inflation II: Model Selection and Constraints on Reheating

    We discuss the model selection problem for inflationary cosmology. We couple ModeCode, a publicly-available numerical solver for the primordial perturbation spectra, to the nested sampler MultiNest, in order to efficiently compute Bayesian evidence. Particular attention is paid to the specification of physically realistic priors, including the parametrization of the post-inflationary expansion and associated thermalization scale. It is confirmed that while present-day data tightly constrains the properties of the power spectrum, it cannot usefully distinguish between the members of a large class of simple inflationary models. We also compute evidence using a simulated Planck likelihood, showing that while Planck will have more power than WMAP to discriminate between inflationary models, it will not definitively address the inflationary model selection problem on its own. However, Planck will place very tight constraints on any model with more than one observationally-distinct inflationary regime -- e.g. the large- and small-field limits of the hilltop inflation model -- and put useful limits on different reheating scenarios for a given model.Comment: ModeCode package available from http://zuserver2.star.ucl.ac.uk/~hiranya/ModeCode/ModeCode (requires CosmoMC and MultiNest); to be published in PRD.     Evolution of hierarchical clustering in the CFHTLS-Wide since z~1

    We present measurements of higher order clustering of galaxies from the latest release of the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) Wide. We construct a volume-limited sample of galaxies that contains more than one million galaxies in the redshift range 0.2<z<1 distributed over the four independent fields of the CFHTLS. We use a counts in cells technique to measure the variance and the hierarchical moments S_n = /^(n-1) (3<n<5) as a function of redshift and angular scale.The robustness of our measurements if thoroughly tested, and the field-to-field scatter is in very good agreement with analytical predictions. At small scales, corresponding to the highly non-linear regime, we find a suggestion that the hierarchical moments increase with redshift. At large scales, corresponding to the weakly non-linear regime, measurements are fully consistent with perturbation theory predictions for standard LambdaCDM cosmology with a simple linear bias.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRA

    Application of Bayesian model averaging to measurements of the primordial power spectrum

    Cosmological parameter uncertainties are often stated assuming a particular model, neglecting the model uncertainty, even when Bayesian model selection is unable to identify a conclusive best model. Bayesian model averaging is a method for assessing parameter uncertainties in situations where there is also uncertainty in the underlying model. We apply model averaging to the estimation of the parameters associated with the primordial power spectra of curvature and tensor perturbations. We use CosmoNest and MultiNest to compute the model Evidences and posteriors, using cosmic microwave data from WMAP, ACBAR, BOOMERanG and CBI, plus large-scale structure data from the SDSS DR7. We find that the model-averaged 95% credible interval for the spectral index using all of the data is 0.940 < n_s < 1.000, where n_s is specified at a pivot scale 0.015 Mpc^{-1}.     End Capping Ring-Opening Olefin Metathesis Polymerization Polymers with Vinyl Lactones

    The selective placement of a functional group at the chain end of a ring-opening metathesis polymer using ruthenium carbene initiators has been a significant limitation. Here we demonstrate a highly effective and facile end-capping technique for ROMP with living ruthenium carbene chain ends using single-turnover olefin metathesis substrates. Vinylene carbonate and 3H-furanone are introduced as functionalization and termination agents for the ruthenium-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization. This leads directly to the formation of functional polymer end groups without further chemical transformation steps. Aldehyde and carboxylic acid end groups can be introduced by this new method which involves the decomposition of acyl carbenes to ruthenium carbides. The high degrees of chain-end functionality obtained are supported by ^1H NMR spectroscopy, MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry, and end-group derivatization

    Dark energy constraints and correlations with systematics from CFHTLS weak lensing, SNLS supernovae Ia and WMAP5

    We combine measurements of weak gravitational lensing from the CFHTLS-Wide survey, supernovae Ia from CFHT SNLS and CMB anisotropies from WMAP5 to obtain joint constraints on cosmological parameters, in particular, the dark energy equation of state parameter w. We assess the influence of systematics in the data on the results and look for possible correlations with cosmological parameters. We implement an MCMC algorithm to sample the parameter space of a flat CDM model with a dark-energy component of constant w. Systematics in the data are parametrised and included in the analysis. We determine the influence of photometric calibration of SNIa data on cosmological results by calculating the response of the distance modulus to photometric zero-point variations. The weak lensing data set is tested for anomalous field-to-field variations and a systematic shape measurement bias for high-z galaxies. Ignoring photometric uncertainties for SNLS biases cosmological parameters by at most 20% of the statistical errors, using supernovae only; the parameter uncertainties are underestimated by 10%. The weak lensing field-to-field variance pointings is 5%-15% higher than that predicted from N-body simulations. We find no bias of the lensing signal at high redshift, within the framework of a simple model. Assuming a systematic underestimation of the lensing signal at high redshift, the normalisation sigma_8 increases by up to 8%. Combining all three probes we obtain -0.10<1+w<0.06 at 68% confidence (-0.18<1+w<0.12 at 95%), including systematic errors.     Very weak lensing in the CFHTLS Wide: Cosmology from cosmic shear in the linear regime

    We present an exploration of weak lensing by large-scale structure in the linear regime, using the third-year (T0003) CFHTLS Wide data release. Our results place tight constraints on the scaling of the amplitude of the matter power spectrum sigma_8 with the matter density Omega_m. Spanning 57 square degrees to i'_AB = 24.5 over three independent fields, the unprecedented contiguous area of this survey permits high signal-to-noise measurements of two-point shear statistics from 1 arcmin to 4 degrees. Understanding systematic errors in our analysis is vital in interpreting the results. We therefore demonstrate the percent-level accuracy of our method using STEP simulations, an E/B-mode decomposition of the data, and the star-galaxy cross correlation function. We also present a thorough analysis of the galaxy redshift distribution using redshift data from the CFHTLS T0003 Deep fields that probe the same spatial regions as the Wide fields. We find sigma_8(Omega_m/0.25)^0.64 = 0.785+-0.043 using the aperture-mass statistic for the full range of angular scales for an assumed flat cosmology, in excellent agreement with WMAP3 constraints. The largest physical scale probed by our analysis is 85 Mpc, assuming a mean redshift of lenses of 0.5 and a LCDM cosmology. This allows for the first time to constrain cosmology using only cosmic shear measurements in the linear regime. Using only angular scales theta> 85 arcmin, we find sigma_8(Omega_m/0.25)_lin^0.53 = 0.837+-0.084, which agree with the results from our full analysis. Combining our results with data from WMAP3, we find Omega_m=0.248+-0.019 and sigma_8 = 0.771+-0.029.Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures (A&A accepted

    Anharmonic magnetic deformation of self-assembled molecular nanocapsules

    High magnetic fields were used to deform spherical nanocapsules, self-assembled from bola-amphiphilic sexithiophene molecules. At low fields the deformation -- measured through linear birefringence -- scales quadratically with the capsule radius and with the magnetic field strength. These data confirm a long standing theoretical prediction (W. Helfrich, Phys. Lett. {\bf 43A}, 409 (1973)), and permits the determination of the bending rigidity of the capsules as (2.6±\pm0.8)×1021\times 10^{-21} J. At high fields, an enhanced rigidity is found which cannot be explained within the Helfrich model. We propose a complete form of the free energy functional that accounts for this behaviour, and allows discussion of the formation and stability of nanocapsules in solution.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Phys.     Sacrificial Synthesis of Hydroxy-Functionalized ROMP Polymers: An Efficiency Study

    We present here a ^1H NMR spectroscopy study of the kinetics of the ROMP macroinitiation of poly(exo-N-phenyl-2,3-norbornene dicarboximide) with various dioxepine derivatives and Grubbs first generation ruthenium initiators. We have recently demonstrated that this so-called “sacrificial block copolymer” approach yields hydroxy-functionalized ROMP polymers with high end-group functionality. This study shows that the substituents on the dioxepine are important for functionalization efficiency, in the order phenyl > isopropyl > methyl. Addition of triphenylphosphine to the ruthenium carbene initiator resulted in lower k_i/k_p (rate of initiation/rate of propagation) values for the macroinitiation than in the absence of triphenylphosphine. We demonstrate that the value of k_i/k_p for macroinitiations can be estimated for new sacrificial monomers by analyzing one or two functionalization reactions. This provides an easy tool for the rapid screening and evaluation of new sacrificial monomers

    CFHTLS weak-lensing constraints on the neutrino masses

    We use measurements of cosmic shear from CFHTLS, combined with WMAP-5 cosmic microwave background anisotropy data, baryonic acoustic oscillations from SDSS and 2dFGRS and supernovae data from SNLS and Gold-set, to constrain the neutrino mass. We obtain a 95% confidence level upper limit of 0.54 eV for the sum of the neutrino masses, and a lower limit of 0.03 eV. The preference for massive neutrinos vanishes when shear-measurement systematics are included in the analysis.Comment: 10 pages. Published versio
