Purpose: Through a literature review, this study aims to understand the relationship between the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), Financial Development, and Economic Growth. In order to provide a complete understanding of the impact of EPI and Financial Development on Economic Growth, the authors propose a conceptual framework based on empirical data. In order to expand knowledge in this field, the study also seeks to identify gaps in the literature and recommend new lines of inquiry.   Design/Methodology/Approach: This study conducts an extensive literature analysis emphasizing publications between 2018 and 2022. The literature of developed, developed-group, and developing countries will be thoroughly and a comprehensive and systematic literature review will be conducted to meet the goals of this study. However, a qualitative method will help us better understand how EPI and financial development affect economic growth and sustainable development because the results and conclusions of empirical investigations need to be more consistent.   Findings: The study concluded that environmental performance and sustainability are essential for achieving economic growth and development in industrialized countries, and policymakers should give top priority to settling carbon costs and taxes, commercializing low-CO2 emissions technologies, cutting non-renewable energy subsidies, offering technology transfer programs, and developing a green trade policy. The study also emphasized the potential of sustainable financial systems and renewable energy to lower emissions and promote economic growth in developing nations. However, successful policies and investments in green technologies are required to achieve this balance.   Practical implication:  This study has practical implications for policymakers who must prioritize sustainable development goals in their economic policies. This includes promoting renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and implementing green trade policies. The study highlights the critical role of government policies in promoting sustainable economic growth, particularly the EPI and Financial Development.   Originality/Value: This study's originality and value lie in its examination of the complex relationship between environmental sustainability, financial development, and economic growth across different countries and regions. The study emphasizes the role of government policies, specifically the EPI and Financial Development, in promoting sustainable economic growth and provides practical implications for policymakers. The study also highlights the need for further research to identify effective policies for promoting sustainable economic growth

The conceptual model for this study was developed based on previous research in the field of HRM practices and leadership styles globally. The conceptual model has HRM practices as an independent variable (IV), Leadership style as a mediator and organisational performance as a dependent variable (DV).   Design/Methodology/Approach: A survey questionnaire instrument was employed to collect data from 156 employees working at sport organisations in Oman. SPSS was used for analysing the data, and Smart-PLS were used to test the proposed hypotheses.   Findings: The result revealed that human resource practices are significantly related to organisational performance. Also, leadership styles mediated the influence of HRM practises on organisational performance.   Research, practical & social implications: The finding of this study provides valuable insights into sport organisations in Oman can enhance their HRM practices to improve organisational performance and achieve their goals. Moreover, it has been recommended that organizations use a leadership style that enhances organizational performance. The results come from a cross-sectional study which was done at the convenience of the researcher. The results may not be generalized across the country. The application of the results to other organisations must be done with maximum care.   Originality/Value: This study adds to the literature on the effectiveness of HRM practices, Leadership style in enhancing organisational performance in a specific context namely the sport organisations in Oman. The study also highlights the mediating role of leadership style in the relationship between HRM practices and organisational performance

Presence of CrkI-containing microvesicles in squamous cell carcinomas could have ramifications on tumor biology and cancer therapeutics.

Recently, we described a phenomenon whereby apoptotic cells generate and release CrkI-containing microvesicles, which stimulate proliferation in surrounding cells upon contact to compensate for their own demise. We termed these microvesicles ACPSVs for Apoptotic Compensatory Proliferation Signaling microvesicles. As immune cells and a majority of current cancer therapeutics destroy tumor cells primarily by apoptosis, we conducted a small pilot study to assess the possibility that ACPSVs may also be generated in squamous cell carcinomas. We first evaluated a primary and a metastatic squamous cell carcinoma cancer cell lines for their ability to produce ACPSVs under normal and apoptotic conditions. We next conducted a pilot study to assess the occurrence of ACPSVs in solid tumors extracted from 20 cancer patients with squamous cell carcinomas. Both cancer cell lines produced copious amounts of ACPSVs under apoptotic conditions. Interestingly, the metastatic squamous cell carcinoma cancer cell line also produced high levels of ACPSVs under healthy condition, suggesting that the ability to generate ACPSVs may be hijacked by these cells. Importantly, ACPSVs were also abundant in the solid tumors of all squamous cell carcinoma cancer patients. Detection of ACPSVs in cancer has potentially important ramifications in tumor biology and cancer therapeutics which warrants further investigation

The Relationship Between Financial Development and Carbon Emissions: A Systematic Review

Purpose: This paper aims to review and analyze the prior research on the relationship between financial development and carbon emissions. As the financial sector develops and the economies grow, carbon emissions are expected to increase. Therefore, it is necessary to identify and understand the factors that contribute to this relationship.   Theoretical framework: Recent studies indicate that financial development facilitates and expands businesses, which may cause an increase in carbon emissions; on the other hand, sustainable development of the financial sector may lead to lower carbon emissions through eco-friendly investments.   Design/Methodology/Approach: This study will employ a systematic literature review to investigate the relationship between financial development and carbon emissions and analyze how developing and developed countries differ concerning these two factors.   Findings: The result showed that empirical studies have produced various, frequently contradicting findings and conclusions. Some studies show a strong positive correlation between financial development, environmental performance indices, and economic growth, while others find a more nuanced correlation.   Research, practical & social implications: This study might stimulate additional investigation into green financial development and emission reductions through green investments. Findings could aid in adjusting policies to account for disparities between developed and developing countries' financial-emission relationships. Green financial instruments might encourage eco-investments and reduce emissions. The social advantages include helping to reduce gaps by providing resources and expertise to poorer nations, promoting sustainability, and contributing to climate solutions.   Originality/Value: This research thoroughly assesses and analyzes prior research on the relationship between financial development and carbon emissions. Particularly in the context of developed and emerging countries, the study helps to investigate and comprehend the elements contributing to this relationship

Efficacy and resistance of different artemisinin-based combination therapies: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

Background: Malaria parasites have developed resistance to most of the known antimalarial drugs in clinical practice, with reports of artemisinin resistance emerging in South East Asia (SEA). We sort to find the status of artemisinin resistance and efficacy of different modalities of the current artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). Methods: We carried out a systematic search in 11 electronic databases to identify in vivo studies published between 2001 and 2017 that reported artemisinin resistance. This was then followed by A network meta-analysis to compare the efficacy of different ACTs. Quality assessment was performed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias (ROB) tool for randomized controlled trials and National Institute of Health (NIH) tool for cross-sectional studies. The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO under number CRD42018087574. Results: With 8400 studies initially identified, 82 were eligible for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Artemisinin resistance was only reported in South East Asia. K13 mutation C580Y was the most abundant mutation associated with resistance having an abundance of 63.1% among all K13 mutations reported. Although the overall network meta-analysis had shown good performance of dihydroartemisinin piperaquine in the early years, a subgroup analysis of the recent years revealed a poor performance of the drug in relation to recrudescence, clinical failure and parasitological failure especially in the artemisinin resistant regions. Conclusion: With report of high resistance and treatment failure against the leading artemisinin combination therapy in South East Asia, it is imperative that a new drug or a formulation is developed before further spread of resistance.Parasitology International, 74, art. no. 101919; 201

Global perspective of familial hypercholesterolaemia: a cross-sectional study from the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC)

none724siBackground The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally. Methods Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or definite heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia at the time they were entered into the registries. Data were assessed overall and by WHO regions, sex, and index versus non-index cases.Findings Of the 61 612 individuals in the registry, 42 167 adults (21 999 [53.6%] women) from 56 countries were included in the study. Of these, 31 798 (75.4%) were diagnosed with the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, and 35 490 (84.2%) were from the WHO region of Europe. Median age of participants at entry in the registry was 46.2 years (IQR 34.3-58.0); median age at diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia was 44.4 years (32.5-56.5), with 40.2% of participants younger than 40 years when diagnosed. Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors increased progressively with age and varied by WHO region. Prevalence of coronary disease was 17.4% (2.1% for stroke and 5.2% for peripheral artery disease), increasing with concentrations of untreated LDL cholesterol, and was about two times lower in women than in men. Among patients receiving lipid-lowering medications, 16 803 (81.1%) were receiving statins and 3691 (21.2%) were on combination therapy, with greater use of more potent lipid-lowering medication in men than in women. Median LDL cholesterol was 5.43 mmol/L (IQR 4.32-6.72) among patients not taking lipid-lowering medications and 4.23 mmol/L (3.20-5.66) among those taking them. Among patients taking lipid-lowering medications, 2.7% had LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L; the use of combination therapy, particularly with three drugs and with proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 inhibitors, was associated with a higher proportion and greater odds of having LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L. Compared with index cases, patients who were non-index cases were younger, with lower LDL cholesterol and lower prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular diseases (all p<0.001).Interpretation Familial hypercholesterolaemia is diagnosed late. Guideline-recommended LDL cholesterol concentrations are infrequently achieved with single-drug therapy. Cardiovascular risk factors and presence of coronary disease were lower among non-index cases, who were diagnosed earlier. Earlier detection and greater use of combination therapies are required to reduce the global burden of familial hypercholesterolaemia. Copyright (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
