    A condensed-mass advection based model for the simulation of liquid polar stratospheric clouds

    International audienceWe present a condensed-mass advection based model (MADVEC) designed to simulate the condensation/evaporation of liquid polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) particles. A (Eulerian-in-radius) discretization scheme is used, making the model suitable for use in global or mesoscale chemistry and transport models (CTMs). The mass advection equations are solved using an adaption of the weighted average flux (WAF) scheme. We validate the numerical scheme using an analytical solution for multicomponent aerosols. The physics of the model are tested using a test case designed by Meilinger et al. (1995). The results from this test corroborate the composition gradients across the size distribution under rapid cooling conditions that were reported in earlier studies.</p

Comfort is achieved by reducing the moisture content of air by a solid or liquid desiccant and then reducing the temperature in an evaporative cooler (direct or indirect). Another system is one where the dehumidifier removes enough moisture to meet the latent portion of the load while the sensible portion is met by a vapor compression cooling system; desiccant regeneration is achieved by using the heat rejected from the condenser together with other thermal sources. At present, residential desiccant cooling systems are in actual operation but are more costly than vapor compression systems, resulting in relatively long payback periods. Component efficiencies need to be improved, particularly the efficiency of the dehumidifier

    Structure of a potential therapeutic antibody bound to Interleukin-16 (IL-16): mechanistic insights and new therapeutic opportunities

    Interleukin-16 (IL-16) is reported to be a chemoattractant cytokine and modulator of T-cell activation, and has been proposed as a ligand for the co-receptor CD4. The secreted active form of IL-16 has been detected at sites of TH1-mediated inflammation, such as those seen in autoimmune diseases, ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI), and tissue transplant rejection. Neutralization of IL-16 recruitment to its receptor, using an anti-IL16 antibody, has been shown to significantly attenuate inflammation and disease pathology in IRI, as well as in some autoimmune diseases. The 14.1 antibody is a monoclonal anti-IL-16 antibody, which when incubated with CD4+ cells is reported to cause a reduction in the TH1-type inflammatory response. Secreted IL-16 contains a characteristic PDZ domain. PDZ domains are typically characterized by a defined globular structure, along with a peptide-binding site located in a groove between the αB and ÎČB structural elements and a highly conserved carboxylate-binding loop. In contrast to other reported PDZ domains, the solution structure previously reported for IL-16 reveals a tryptophan residue obscuring the recognition groove. We have solved the structure of the 14.1Fab fragment in complex with IL-16, revealing that binding of the antibody requires a conformational change in the IL-16 PDZ domain. This involves the rotation of the αB-helix, accompanied movement of the peptide groove obscuring tryptophan residue, and consequent opening up of the binding site for interaction. Our study reveals a surprising mechanism of action for the antibody and identifies new opportunities for the development of IL-16-targeted therapeutics, including small molecules that mimic the interaction of the antibody

    Gateway to offending behaviour: permission-giving thoughts of online users of child sexual exploitation material.

    The endorsement of permission-giving thoughts, or so-called cognitive distortions, has been discussed as a contributing factor in sexually abusive behaviour. The current study set out to explore the thinking patterns of offenders who have used/downloaded child sexual exploitation material (CSEM), based on a survey of professionals. A thematic analysis elicited four overarching themes, namely the Perceived Nature of Children (perception of children portrayed in CSEM, as well as children in general), Non-sexual Engagement with CSEM (motivating factors that are not inherently sexual in nature), Denial of Harm (perception of the level of harm caused by CSEM), and Expression of a General Sexual Preference (general interest in deviant sexual behaviour). These themes aid to explore the differences and similarities between contact and non-contact offenders and to improve the understanding of the role of permission-giving thoughts in this offending. Results are discussed in terms of their theoretical significance and future implications

    A critical comparison of technologies for a plant genome sequencing project

    BACKGROUND: A high-quality genome sequence of any model organism is an essential starting point for genetic and other studies. Older clone-based methods are slow and expensive, whereas faster, cheaper short-read-only assemblies can be incomplete and highly fragmented, which minimizes their usefulness. The last few years have seen the introduction of many new technologies for genome assembly. These new technologies and associated new algorithms are typically benchmarked on microbial genomes or, if they scale appropriately, on larger (e.g., human) genomes. However, plant genomes can be much more repetitive and larger than the human genome, and plant biochemistry often makes obtaining high-quality DNA that is free from contaminants difficult. Reflecting their challenging nature, we observe that plant genome assembly statistics are typically poorer than for vertebrates. RESULTS: Here, we compare Illumina short read, Pacific Biosciences long read, 10x Genomics linked reads, Dovetail Hi-C, and BioNano Genomics optical maps, singly and combined, in producing high-quality long-range genome assemblies of the potato species Solanum verrucosum. We benchmark the assemblies for completeness and accuracy, as well as DNA compute requirements and sequencing costs. CONCLUSIONS: The field of genome sequencing and assembly is reaching maturity, and the differences we observe between assemblies are surprisingly small. We expect that our results will be helpful to other genome projects, and that these datasets will be used in benchmarking by assembly algorithm developers.</p

    The contributory role of autism symptomology in child pornography offending : why there is an urgent need for empirical research in this area

    Purpose As recently highlighted by Creaby-Attwood and Allely (2017) it is crucial that the possible innate vulnerabilities that contributed to sexual offending behaviour in an individual with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are taken into consideration for the application of a diversion program to avoid the stigma of a criminal conviction or during sentencing for a non-custodial outcome. Specifically, in those defendants with a diagnosis of what used to be referred to as Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and now is recognised as an ASD and who are charged and convicted of a non-contact sexual offence, education and mental health intervention will best serve the interests of justice. Design/methodology/approach This paper focuses on one particular type of sexual offending behaviour, namely, possession of child pornography. A systematic PRISMA review was conducted. Findings The authors linked examples of child pornography in the research literature to the ASD symptomology and describe how the symptomology explains such behaviour as not reflecting actual sexual deviance. Originality/value Downloading and viewing of child pornography by individuals with ASD has received relatively little research outside the mental health field. This review is of particular importance to those in the criminal justice system who may not have much knowledge and understanding of ASD. It is suggested that diversion programmes and mental health courts should be set up for this particular population charged with this particular crime in mind so that the necessary treatment/intervention/support and care can be given to this particular group.     Leveraging hope & experience: Towards an integrated model of transformative learning, community and leadership for sustainability action and change

    How can we engage in futures-oriented ‘hope work’ in the face of extraordinary global challenges, and from within the confines of a commodified higher education system? This chapter traces the experience of a group of staff and students at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, who came together to explore this question through an experimental, emergent, and creative process of co-operative inquiry. This shared safe space enabled relations of trust, openness and enjoyment to emerge, which were conducive to learning, community-building, and shared leadership. Thus our shared experience enabled us to shed new and critical light on transformative learning, transformative community and transformative leadership. However, in place of three separate concepts, our findings lead us to a composite, integrated and mutually reinforcing model centred on a set of connecting 2 principles. These in turn are rooted in our subjective experiences of our practical cares and concerns, both individual and shared. Emerging from within an experiential ontology, then, this integrated model offers a reflexive alternative to the top-down approach to sustainability teaching and strategy that currently prevails in many higher education institutions. We share here our experience and the theoretical model it catalysed – along with suggestions for practical actions. In so doing, we hope that we might inspire others to experiment (in their own way) with more organic, less hierarchical, and potentially more enduring approaches to the pedagogy and practice of sustainability

    Gray platelet syndrome (GPS) is a predominantly recessive platelet disorder that is characterized by mild thrombocytopenia with large platelets and a paucity of α-granules; these abnormalities cause mostly moderate but in rare cases severe bleeding. We sequenced the exomes of four unrelated individuals and identified NBEAL2 as the causative gene; it has no previously known function but is a member of a gene family that is involved in granule development.
