Estimation of Standardized Mortality Ratio in Geographic Epidemiology

The analysis of geographic variation of disease and its representation on a map form an important topic of research in epidemiology and in public health in general. Identification of spatial heterogeneity of relative risk using morbidity and mortality data is required. The usual technique of disease atlas generation consists of data collection (observed number of disease cases). These data are collected during a continuous period of time (5 to 10 years). The second aspect of atlas creation relates to the analysis of these data. A traditional measure of the spatial variation is usually taken as a ratio of the number of observed disease cases to the numbe ro the expected disease cases for the given region. This measure is called the Standardized Mortality (morbidity) ratio (SMR). Our interest is to estimate the spatial variation, I.e. to estimate the mean and the variance of the SMR. In this paper we will focus on the developments that avoid the pitfalls of the crude SMR. We will compare the results of nonparametric and para metric approaches to the SMR estimation. More specifically, we present a mixture model to evaluate the heterogeneity in estimating SMR. Simulation studies are carrried out and the results analyzed

Com o objetivo identificar a visão de uma professora a respeito do uso desse software na introdução de um novo assunto matemático, faremos um estudo de caso acompanhando e colaborando com tal professora. Durante cinco aulas, em uma turma de oitavo ano de ensino fundamental, abordaremos o conteúdo de geometria plana. Com relação aos resultados, consideramos a possibilidade de que a professora perceba a importância do software como um aliado no processo de ensino da disciplin

Conforto humano em edifícios altos submetidos à ação do vento

Engenharia Civil.Este trabalho aborda a problemática do desconforto sentido pelos usuários de edifícios altos, causado por acelerações induzidas pelo caráter dinâmico do vento. Serão apresentados métodos para estimar a frequência natural das edificações, e critérios de avaliação do conforto em função da aceleração induzida. Com este objetivo, foram realizados dois estudos de caso para edifícios em concreto armado com mais de 100 metros de altura, para verificação deste critério. Os deslocamentos dos pavimentos habitáveis mais altos foram através do programa AltoQi Eberick V10. Foram comparados os resultados obtidos para mais de um método de obtenção da frequência natural, assim como para mais de um critério de avalização do conforto. Por fim, no segundo estudo foi feita a comparação com resultados obtidos a partir da análise em túnel de vento

Clay smear: Review of mechanisms and applications

AbstractClay smear is a collection of fault processes and resulting fault structures that form when normal faults deform layered sedimentary sections. These elusive structures have attracted deep interest from researchers interested in subsurface fluid flow, particularly in the oil and gas industry. In the four decades since the association between clay-smear structures and oil and gas accumulations was introduced, there has been extensive research into the fault processes that create clay smear and the resulting effects of that clay smear on fluid flow. We undertake a critical review of the literature associated with outcrop studies, laboratory and numerical modeling, and subsurface field studies of clay smear and propose a comprehensive summary that encompasses all of these elements. Important fault processes that contribute to clay smear are defined in the context of the ratio of rock strength and in situ effective stresses, the geometric evolution of fault systems, and the composition of the faulted section. We find that although there has been progress in all avenues pursued, progress has been uneven, and the processes that disrupt clay smears are mostly overlooked. We highlight those research areas that we think will yield the greatest benefit and suggest that taking these emerging results within a more process-based framework presented here will lead to a new generation of clay smear models

Poetizando uma experiência via matrizes matemáticas : relatos de um viajar docente

Esta dissertação constitui o relato de uma viagem em meu caminhar docente. Alia a experiência da prática docente com a experiência da escrita. Acompanham-me autores como Larrosa e Deleuze. Os objetivos desta dissertação se compõem de dois itens: uma prática de ensino de matrizes em Matemática, especificamente, matrizes cíclicas, para uma classe de alunos do Ensino Médio, visando brechas para que surja a experiência, e a produção escrita enquanto uma poética dessa experiência. Trata-se de uma escrita apaixonada que tenta apropriar-se da linguagem da experiência, criando um estilo singular que deixa entrever parte do processo da própria escrita. É minha experiência e meu aprendizado em meio à experiência da escrita e da docência em Matemática que compartilho neste texto.This thesis consists of a travel report of my path as a teacher. It unites my teaching experience with the experience of writing. Authors such as Larrosa and Deleuze accompany me in this path. The goals of this thesis can be divided in two items: firstly, my teaching experience in mathematical matrices, specifically cyclic matrices, to a class of high school students, and my search for breaches that might allow the experience to arise, and secondly, writing as a poetics of this experience. Writing here as an act of passion that attempts to appropriate the language of experience, creating a singular style that allows a glimpse into a part of the writing process itself. What I share in this text is my experience and learning in the midst of the experiences of writing and teaching Mathematics

O PIBID e a intervenção das ações complementares na escola

As ações complementares têm como objetivo trabalhar em turno extraclasse com alunos que apresentam dificuldades de aprendizagem na disciplina de Matemática. Sendo desenvolvidas com os alunos atividades referentes aos conteúdos conceituais vistos em sala de aula, através de jogos, aulas expositivas, atividades em grupo e exercícios para reforço do conteúdo. Com isso entendemos a importância que o PIBID possui, como auxiliador no ensino e aprendizagem tanto dos bolsistas, como dos alunos participantes do projet

A responsabilidade civil da plataforma de marketplace pelos produtos não-entregues: The liability of the marketplace platform for undelivered products

Esta pesquisa visa estudar a jurisprudência relacionada à responsabilidade civil das plataformas de marketplace, uma modalidade de sítio eletrônico que oferece uma seleção de produtos oferecidos por vários terceiros-fornecedores, similar a um shopping digital. Discute-se aqui o que o Código de Defesa do Consumidor diz sobre a responsabilidade civil dos fornecedores, o que são comércio eletrônico e plataformas de marketplace e o que os tribunais nacionais e estrangeiros estão decidindo acerca da responsabilidade das plataformas de marketplace. Utilizou-se o método indutivo e, ao final, constatamos que, como essas plataformas auferem lucro com a venda destes produtos, elas podem sim ser responsabilizadas, mesmo que esses produtos sejam fornecidos por um terceiro

Dilatant normal faulting in jointed cohesive rocks: a physical model study

Dilatant faults often form in rocks containing pre-existing joints, but the effects of joints on fault segment linkage and fracture connectivity are not well understood. We present an analogue modeling study using cohesive powder with pre-formed joint sets in the upper layer, varying the angle between joints and a rigid basement fault. We analyze interpreted map-view photographs at maximum displacement for damage zone width, number of connected joints, number of secondary fractures, degree of segmentation and area fraction of massively dilatant fractures. Particle imaging velocimetry provides insight into the deformation history of the experiments and illustrates the localization pattern of fault segments. Results show that with increasing angle between joint-set and basement-fault strike the number of secondary fractures and the number of connected joints increase, while the area fraction of massively dilatant fractures shows only a minor increase. Models without pre-existing joints show far lower area fractions of massively dilatant fractures while forming distinctly more secondary fractures

Evolution of a highly dilatant fault zone in the grabens of Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA - Integrating fieldwork, ground-penetrating radar and airborne imagery analysis

Abstract. The grabens of Canyonlands National Park are a young and active system of sub-parallel, arcuate grabens, whose evolution is the result of salt movement in the subsurface and a slight regional tilt of the faulted strata. We present results of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys in combination with field observations and analysis of high-resolution airborne imagery. GPR data show intense faulting of the Quaternary sediments at the flat graben floors, implying a more complex fault structure than visible at the surface. Direct measurements of heave and throw at several locations to infer fault dips at depth, combined with observations of primary joint surfaces in the upper 100 m, suggest a highly dilatant fault geometry. Sinkholes observed in the field as well as in airborne imagery give insights in local dilatancy and show where water and sediments are transported underground. Based on correlations of paleosols observed in outcrops and GPR profiles, we argue that either the grabens in Canyonlands National Park are older than previously assumed or that sedimentation rates were much higher in the Pleistocene. O objetivo primordial do presente trabalho é demonstrar, através de gráficos, o resultado obtido na pesquisa de campo, que foi realizada com a finalidade de traçar o perfil social e econômico das pessoas assistidas pelo Projeto de assistência jurídica mantido pelo Curso de Direito, no Escritório de Práticas Jurídicas, com sede junto a OAB de Frederico Westphalen/RS. Com base nas respostas obtidas, no questionário aplicado aos participantes, é possível demonstrar a realidade social vivenciada pela população carente da comarca de Frederico Westphalen/RS
