    The Conformal Penrose Limit and the Resolution of the pp-curvature Singularities

    We consider the exact solutions of the supergravity theories in various dimensions in which the space-time has the form M_{d} x S^{D-d} where M_{d} is an Einstein space admitting a conformal Killing vector and S^{D-d} is a sphere of an appropriate dimension. We show that, if the cosmological constant of M_{d} is negative and the conformal Killing vector is space-like, then such solutions will have a conformal Penrose limit: M^{(0)}_{d} x S^{D-d} where M^{(0)}_{d} is a generalized d-dimensional AdS plane wave. We study the properties of the limiting solutions and find that M^{(0)}_{d} has 1/4 supersymmetry as well as a Virasoro symmetry. We also describe how the pp-curvature singularity of M^{(0)}_{d} is resolved in the particular case of the D6-branes of D=10 type IIA supergravity theory. This distinguished case provides an interesting generalization of the plane waves in D=11 supergravity theory and suggests a duality between the SU(2) gauged d=8 supergravity of Salam and Sezgin on M^{(0)}_{8} and the d=7 ungauged supergravity theory on its pp-wave boundary.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX; typos corrected, journal versio

    Teaching linguistic politeness: a methodological proposal

    The aim of this article is to explore theoretical and methodological aspects of the teaching of pragmatics in a second language. Taking as point of departure the pragmatic continuum, which includes pragmalinguistics and sociopragmatics, we focus on the promotion of sociopragmatic knowledge in classroom contexts. More specifically, it is argued that a revised contextual and interactional view of Brown and Levinson¿s (1987) model of linguistic politeness, related to such notions as genre and politeness systems, offers suitable tools of pragmatic description for use in teaching and learning second languages. We start with a brief overview of linguistic politeness from a socio-cognitive framework. Then, we revise the main methodological approaches to the teaching of pragmatic knowledge in general and the specific teaching of linguistic politeness in particular.     Esta investigação inscreve-se dominantemente no âmbito dos estudos da criança e ancora a sua área específica nas questões linguísticas, assumindo os pressupostos teóricos e metodológicos da análise do discurso (de tradição francófona), considerando também contributos de áreas conexas. Analisa textos de manuais/livros escolares usados no sistema de ensino português, pretendendo tornar visíveis as imagens que estes constroem das crianças e da infância, bem como os recursos linguísticos mais relevantes associados a tal construção. Procura desvendar a representatividade das tipologias textuais nos manuais e de que forma estas contribuem para a construção das referidas imagens. Conclui que as crianças dos textos são seres sem voz e sem poder, consumidoras, mas não coprodutoras de cultura, com os textos inculcando valores conformadores da manutenção da ordem social estabelecida, sendo a forma como as tipologias textuais estão organizadas contribuidora para se alcançar esse propósito.This research forms primarily part of the child studies and is based on its specific field of linguistic issues, assuming the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the speech analysis (of French-speaking tradition), having also regard the inputs of related fields. It analyses texts from handbooks/textbooks used on the Portuguese educational system, intending to reveal pictures that these books construct about children and childhood, as well as the most relevant linguistic resources associated with such construction. This paper aims at unravelling the representation of the text typologies in the handbooks and how these can contribute for building of such pictures. From this, one can conclude that children from the texts are voiceless and have no power, they are consumers but not co-producers of culture, with these texts instilling conservative values for maintaining the established social order, but also that the way texts typologies are organized to contribute for reaching that propose.Esta investigación se ensere en el ámbito de los estudios del niño y más precisamente en la área de las cuestiones lingüísticas, asumiendo los presupuestos teóricos e metodológicos de la análisis del discurso (de tradición francófona), considerando también aportes de las áreas conexas. Analiza textos de manuales/libros escolares usados en el sistema de enseñanza portugués, pretendiendo tornar visibles las imágenes que este construyen de los niños y de la infancia, bien como los recursos lingüísticos más relevantes asociados a esa construcción.     Lie algebroid foliations and E1(M){\cal E}^1(M)-Dirac structures

    We prove some general results about the relation between the 1-cocycles of an arbitrary Lie algebroid AA over MM and the leaves of the Lie algebroid foliation on MM associated with AA. Using these results, we show that a E1(M){\cal E}^1(M)-Dirac structure LL induces on every leaf FF of its characteristic foliation a E1(F){\cal E}^1(F)-Dirac structure LFL_F, which comes from a precontact structure or from a locally conformal presymplectic structure on FF. In addition, we prove that a Dirac structure L~\tilde{L} on M×RM\times \R can be obtained from LL and we discuss the relation between the leaves of the characteristic foliations of LL and L~\tilde{L}.Comment: 25 page

    Objective Evaluation of Multiple Sclerosis Lesion Segmentation using a Data Management and Processing Infrastructure

    We present a study of multiple sclerosis segmentation algorithms conducted at the international MICCAI 2016 challenge. This challenge was operated using a new open-science computing infrastructure. This allowed for the automatic and independent evaluation of a large range of algorithms in a fair and completely automatic manner. This computing infrastructure was used to evaluate thirteen methods of MS lesions segmentation, exploring a broad range of state-of-theart algorithms, against a high-quality database of 53 MS cases coming from four centers following a common definition of the acquisition protocol. Each case was annotated manually by an unprecedented number of seven different experts. Results of the challenge highlighted that automatic algorithms, including the recent machine learning methods (random forests, deep learning, …), are still trailing human expertise on both detection and delineation criteria. In addition, we demonstrate that computing a statistically robust consensus of the algorithms performs closer to human expertise on one score (segmentation) although still trailing on detection scores

    Doxorubicin versus doxorubicin and cisplatin in endometrial carcinoma: definitive results of a randomised study (55872) by the EORTC Gynaecological Cancer Group

    Background: Combination chemotherapy yields better response rates which do not always lead to a survival advantage. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the reported differences in the efficacy and toxicity of monotherapy with doxorubicin (DOX) versus combination therapy with cisplatin (CDDP) in endometrial adenocarcinoma lead to significant advantage in favour of the combination. Patients and methods: Eligible patients had histologically-proven advanced and/or recurrent endometrial adenocarcinoma and were chemo-naïve. Treatment consisted of either DOX 60 mg/m2 alone or CDDP 50 mg/m2 added to DOX 60 mg/m2, every 4 weeks. Results: A total of 177 patients were entered and median follow-up is 7.1 years. The combination DOX-CDDP was more toxic than DOX alone. Haematological toxicity consisted mainly of white blood cell toxicity grade 3 and 4 (55% versus 30%). Non-haematological toxicity consisted mainly of grade 3 and 4 alopecia (72% versus 65%) and nausea/vomiting (36 % versus 12%). The combination DOX-CDDP provided a significantly higher response rate than single agent DOX (P <0.001). Thirty-nine patients (43%) responded on DOX-CDDP [13 complete responses (CRs) and 26 partial responses (PRs)], versus 15 patients (17%) on DOX alone (8 CR and 7 PR). The median overall survival (OS) was 9 months in the DOX-CDDP arm versus 7 months in the DOX alone arm (Wilcoxon P = 0.0654). Regression analysis showed that WHO performance status was statistically significant as a prognostic factor for survival, and stratifying for this factor, treatment effect reaches significance (hazard ratio = 1.46, 95% confidence interval 1.05-2.03, P = 0.024). Conclusions: In comparison to single agent DOX, the combination of DOX-CDDP results in higher but acceptable toxicity.     © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis GroupThis paper traces key themes in contemporary experimental fieldwork – explorations of ordinary places by artists, writers, activists, enthusiasts, students and researchers – to the works of Georges Perec. Preoccupations of this work – including playfulness, attention to the ordinary, and writing as a fieldwork practice – are all anticipated and elaborated in Perec’s oeuvre, where they converge around an ‘essayistic’ approach. Exhibiting these traits, some contemporary fieldwork is more convincingly Perecquian than psychogeographical or Situationist, despite the tendency to identify it with the latter. Through Perec, it is therefore possible to bring contemporary experimental fieldwork into focus, identifying a coherence and sense of project within it, while speaking to the question of what it means and could mean to conduct fieldwork experimentally. Particular attention is paid in this paper to Perec’s most accomplished and sustained field texts, both of which have been translated into English: An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris (2010, from 1975 original in French) and Species of Spaces (1999/1974)
