Synthetic Data Generation for the Internet of Things

    Get PDF
The concept of Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly moving from a vision to being pervasive in our everyday lives. This can be observed in the integration of connected sensors from a multitude of devices such as mobile phones, healthcare equipment, and vehicles. There is a need for the development of infrastructure support and analytical tools to handle IoT data, which are naturally big and complex. But, research on IoT data can be constrained by concerns about the release of privately owned data. In this paper, we present the design and implementation results of a synthetic IoT data generation framework. The framework enables research on synthetic data that exhibit the complex characteristics of original data without compromising proprietary information and personal privacy

Thermal Expansion in BaRuO3 Perovskites – an unusual case of bond strengthening at high temperatures

    Get PDF
The temperature dependence of the structures of three polytypes of BaRuO3 have been investigated between room temperature and 1000 °C using high resolution Synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The structural studies reveal a systematic decrease in the Ru-Ru distance as the pressure required to prepare the polytype increases. The O-O distance across the shared face increases as the Ru-Ru separation decreases. The 9R and 4H polytypes undergo unexceptional changes with increasing temperature. In 6H-BaRuO3 there is an apparent increase in the Ru-Ru interaction around 650 °C and concurrent reduction in the O-O distance indicating an anomalous strengthening of the Ru-Ru interactions upon heating.Australian Synchrotron Australian Research Counci

The impact of anion ordering on octahedra distortion and phase transitions in SrTaO2N and BaTaO2N

    Get PDF
In this work, we synthesized BaTaO2N and SrTaO2N using a two-step high temperature solid state reaction method and analysed the structural distortions, relative to the ideal cubic perovskite structure, according to group theory. From a complete distortion analysis/refinement using high resolution neutron diffraction data in the temperature range 8 K to 613 K, we identified tetragonal structures for BaTaO2N [P4/mmm (No 123)] and SrTaO2N [I4/mcm (No 140)]. In contrast to an anion-disordered cubic perovskite (Pm3 ̅m No 221) with Ta at the cell center, both systems show a site preference for oxygen anions in the two opposite corners (along the c axis) of the Ta-O/N octahedra rather than the four square corners in the ab plane (Γ3+ occupancy distortion), which induces a tetragonal elongation of the unit cell with the c axis being longer than the a axis. A further Ta-O/N octahedra displacement [R5-(a,0,0), rotation about the c axis] distortion was observed in SrTaO2N. This distortion mode is accompanied by an increased unit cell distortion that decreases as the temperature increases. Ultimately a second-order phase transition caused by the loss of the R5-(a,0,0) mode was observed at 400 – 450 K.Australian Synchrotron Australian Research Counc

A simple model for magnetism in itinerant electron systems

A new lattice model of interacting electrons is presented. It can be viewed as a classical Hubbard model in which the energy associated to electron itinerance is proportional to the total number of possible electron jumps. Symmetry properties of the Hubbard model are preserved. In the half-filled band with strong interaction the model becomes the Ising model. The main features of the magnetic behavior of the model in the one-dimensional and mean-field cases are studied.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Physica

Fighting mine fires with a small turbine engine

    Get PDF
In the past, exhaust emissions and steam produced from large turbine engines have been successfully used to extinguish fires or early stages of spontaneous combustion of coal in underground coal mines. Extinguishing fires with a turbine engine exhaust emissions and steam eliminates the heat and displaces the oxygen. However, large turbine engines require a pre-existing connection port and the ability to force exhaust gasses throughout the existing underground coal mine ventilation systems and roadways. Simtars is assessing the viability of a smaller turbine engine, with the vision of the exhaust emissions being deployed through existing or newly drilled boreholes in close proximity to the source of the heating or fire. The viability is being investigated through small-scale trials at the Simtars testing facilities. This paper presents the outcomes of the small-scale testing of the turbine engine considering: (1) the minimum pipe diameter the turbine engine can deliver the exhaust gases through; (2) the exhaust emissions produced from the turbine engine, especially carbon dioxide, oxygen, and carbon monoxide; (3) the output velocity and volumetric flow that the turbine engine can deliver through the minimum pipe bore diameter; and (4) the temperature and humidity values the turbine engine exhaust delivers through the minimum pipe bore diameter. The results show that the SteamexFire 300 output emission are adequate to extinguish a fire and spontaneous combustion of coal in an underground coal mine. However, the SteamexFire 300 turbine engine could not provide adequate gas flow through a 150 mm ducting as it produced excessive back pressure

A Leishmania secretion system for the expression of major ampullate spidroin mimics

    Get PDF
Spider major ampullate silk fibers have been shown to display a unique combination of relatively high fracture strength and toughness compared to other fibers and show potential for tissue engineering scaffolds. While it is not possible to mass produce native spider silks, the potential ability to produce fibers from recombinant spider silk fibers could allow for an increased innovation rate within tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In this pilot study, we improved upon a prior fabrication route by both changing the expression host and additives to the fiber pulling precursor solution to improve the performance of fibers. The new expression host for producing spidroin protein mimics, protozoan parasite Leishmania tarentolae, has numerous advantages including a relatively low cost of culture, rapid growth rate and a tractable secretion pathway. Tensile testing of hand pulled fibers produced from these spidroin-like proteins demonstrated that additives could significantly modify the fiber’s mechanical and/or antimicrobial properties. Cross-linking the proteins with glutaraldehyde before fiber pulling resulted in a relative increase in tensile strength and decrease in ductility. The addition of ampicillin into the spinning solution resulted in the fibers being able to inhibit bacterial growth

Self-reported perinatal depressive symptoms and postnatal symptom severity after treatment with antidepressants in pregnancy: a cross-sectional study in 12 European countries using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale

    Get PDF
Purpose: To explore the prevalence of self-reported antenatal and postnatal depressive symptoms by severity across multiple countries and the association between antidepressant treatment in pregnancy and postnatal symptom severity. Patients and methods: Multinational web-based study in 12 European countries (n=8069). Uniform data collection was ensured via an electronic questionnaire. Pregnant women at any gestational week and mothers of children with less than one year of age, could participate. We used the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to measure prevalence of antenatal and postnatal depressive symptoms according to severity, which were corrected by survey-weight adjustment (descriptive analysis). Within mothers with a psychiatric disorder (n=173), we estimated the association between antidepressant treatment in pregnancy and postnatal depressive symptom severity, as standardized EPDS mean scores, via inverse probability of treatment weight (association analysis). Results: In the descriptive analysis (n=8069), the period prevalence of moderate to very severe depressive symptoms was higher in the Western and Eastern regions relative to the Northern, both in the ante- (6.8-7.5% vs 4.3%) and postnatal period (7.6% vs 4.7%). One in two mothers with psychiatric disorders used antidepressant in pregnancy (86 out of 173). In the association analysis, women medicated at any time during pregnancy (adjusted β: -0.34, 95% CI: -0.66, -0.02) had a significant postnatal symptom severity reduction compared with the nonmedicated counterpart. This effect was larger (β: -0.74, 95% CI: -1.24, -0.24) when the analysis was restricted to mothers within six months after childbirth. Conclusions: The prevalence of self-reported antenatal and postnatal depressive symptoms differs across European countries. Among women with psychiatric disorders, those who had been on treatment with antidepressants during pregnancy were less likely to report postnatal depressive symptoms, particularly within the six-month period after childbirth, compared to the nonmedicated counterpart

Electrical detection of 31P spin quantum states

In recent years, a variety of solid-state qubits has been realized, including quantum dots, superconducting tunnel junctions and point defects. Due to its potential compatibility with existing microelectronics, the proposal by Kane based on phosphorus donors in Si has also been pursued intensively. A key issue of this concept is the readout of the P quantum state. While electrical measurements of magnetic resonance have been performed on single spins, the statistical nature of these experiments based on random telegraph noise measurements has impeded the readout of single spin states. In this letter, we demonstrate the measurement of the spin state of P donor electrons in silicon and the observation of Rabi flops by purely electric means, accomplished by coherent manipulation of spin-dependent charge carrier recombination between the P donor and paramagnetic localized states at the Si/SiO2 interface via pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance. The electron spin information is shown to be coupled through the hyperfine interaction with the P nucleus, which demonstrates the feasibility of a recombination-based readout of nuclear spins
