    Multi-annual droughts in the English Lowlands: a review of their characteristics and climate drivers in the winter half-year

    The English Lowlands is a relatively dry, densely populated region in the south-east of the UK in which water is used intensively. Consequently, parts of the region are water-stressed and face growing water resource pressures. The region is heavily dependent on groundwater and particularly vulnerable to long, multi-annual droughts primarily associated with dry winters. Despite this vulnerability, the atmospheric drivers of multi-annual droughts in the region are poorly understood, an obstacle to developing appropriate drought management strategies, including monitoring and early warning systems. To advance our understanding, we assess known key climate drivers in the winter half-year (October–March) and their likely relationships with multi-annual droughts in the region. We characterise historic multi-annual drought episodes back to 1910 for the English Lowlands using various meteorological and hydrological data sets. Multi-annual droughts are identified using a gridded precipitation series for the entire region, and refined using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI) and Standardized Groundwater level Index (SGI) applied to regional-scale river flow and groundwater time series. We explore linkages between a range of potential climatic driving factors and precipitation, river flow and groundwater level indicators in the English Lowlands for the winter half-year. The drivers or forcings include El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the North Atlantic tripole sea surface temperature (SST) pattern, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO), solar and volcanic forcing and the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO). As expected, no single driver convincingly explains the occurrence of any multi-annual drought in the historical record. However, we demonstrate, for the first time, an association between La Niña episodes and winter rainfall deficits in some major multi-annual drought episodes in the English Lowlands. We also show significant (albeit relatively weak) links between ENSO and drought indicators applied to river flow and groundwater levels. We also show that some of the other drivers listed above are likely to influence English Lowlands rainfall. We conclude by signposting a direction for this future research effort

    Quantum random walks in optical lattices

    We propose an experimental realization of discrete quantum random walks using neutral atoms trapped in optical lattices. The random walk is taking place in position space and experimental implementation with present day technology --even using existing set-ups-- seems feasible. We analyze the influence of possible imperfections in the experiment and investigate the transition from a quantum random walk to the classical random walk for increasing errors and decoherence.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Fungal diversity of selected habitat specific Cynorkis species (Orchidaceae) in the central highlands of Madagascar

    About 90% of Cynorkis species are endemic to the biodiversity hotspot of Madagascar. This terrestrial habitat-specific genus received little study for fungal diversity to support conservation. We evaluated the diversity of culturable fungi of 11 species and soil characteristics from six sites spanning a >40 km radius in and along the region’s inselbergs. Peloton-forming fungi were grown in vitro from root/protocorm slices and positively identified using DNA sequencing. The fungal diversity was then correlated with soil pH, NO3-N, P, and K. All species harbored either putative mycorrhizal associates in the Rhizoctonia complex or Hypocreales fungi. Tulasnella Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) were most prevalent in all soil types while Serendipita OTUs were found in species inhabiting granite/rock outcrops in moist soil (seepage areas). Most Cynorkis species were present in soil with low NO3-N and P levels with diversity of mycorrhizal fungi inversely correlated to NO3-N levels. Of the different orchid life stages sampled, only one species (Cynorkis fastigiata) yielded putative mycorrhizal fungi from juvenile stages. As diversity of mycorrhizal fungi of Cynorkis spp. was negatively correlated with NO3-N, and majority of the studied taxa were found in soils with low NO3-N and P contents, reintroduction studies must include analysis of N and P in detail. For the first time, we showed that the assemblage of culturable fungi in the roots of habitat-specific species of Cynorkis (Orchidaceae) are intimately tied to specific soil characteristics

Empirical investigations, theoretical modeling, and computational simulations with an anthropomorphic agent are based upon comparable settings and common representations. Findings pertain to the coordination of verbal and gestural constituents in deictic utterances. We discovered high variability in the temporal synchronization of such constituents in task-oriented dialogue, and a theoretical treatment thereof is presented. With respect to simulation we exemplarily show how the influence of situational characteristics on the choice of verbal and nonverbal constituents can be accounted for. In particular, this depends on spatio-temporal relations between speaker and the objects they refer to in dialogue

    GroupBanter: Supporting Serendipitous Group Conversations with IM

    Abstract. This paper describes GroupBanter, a tool for supporting serendipitous group conversations using instant messaging. We investigate the potential of ephemeral group conversations by providing awareness of friends‟ IM conversations, serving as an implicit invitation to join a group conversation. We present our vision and describe our prototype system. Results from two field studies carried out in different contexts show that users valued GroupBanter and that it provided new opportunities for communication that aren‟t well served by traditional IM, email, or face-to-face communication. Our results indicate there is potential in providing a lightweight communication channel that lies between traditional, private IM conversations and more public IRC-like conversations

    Precipitation downscaling in Canadian Prairie Provinces using the LARS-WG and GLM approaches

    Two stochastic precipitation simulation models, namely the Long Ashton Research Station weather generator (LARS-WG) and a Generalized Linear Model-based weather generator (GLM-WG), are evaluated for downscaling daily precipitation at four selected locations (Banff, Calgary, Saskatoon and Winnipeg) in the Canadian Prairies. These weather generators model precipitation occurrence and amount components separately. Large-scale climate variables (including mean temperature, sea level pressure and relative humidity, derived from National Centers for Environmental Prediction reanalysis data) and observed precipitation records are used to calibrate and validate GLM-WG, while only observed precipitation records are used to calibrate and validate LARS-WG. A comparison of common statistical properties (i.e. annual/monthly means, variability of daily and monthly precipitation and monthly proportion of dry days) and characteristics of drought and extreme precipitation events derived from simulated and observed daily precipitation for the calibration (1961-1990) and validation (1991-2003) periods shows that both weather generators are able to simulate most of the statistical properties of the historical precipitation records, but GLM-WG appears to perform better than LARS-WG for simulating precipitation extremes and temporal variability of drought severity indices. For developing projected changes to precipitation characteristics, a change factor approach based on Canadian Global Climate Model (CGCM) simulated current (1961-1990) and future (2071-2100) period precipitation is used for driving simulations of LARS-WG, while for driving GLM-WG simulations, large-scale predictor variables derived from CGCM current and future period outputs are used. Results of both weather generators suggest significant increases to the mean annual precipitation for the 2080s. Changes to selected return levels of annual daily precipitation extremes are found to be both location- and generator-dependent, with highly significant increases noted for Banff with LARS-WG and for both Banff and Calgary with GLM-WG. Overall, 5- and 10-yr return levels are associated with increases (with the exception of Winnipeg) while 30- and 50-yr return levels are associated with site-dependent increases or decreases. A simple precipitation-based drought severity index suggests decreases in drought severity for the 2080s. © 2013 Canadian Water Resources Association
