Who does what now? How physics lab instruction impacts student behaviors
While laboratory instruction is a cornerstone of physics education, the
impact of student behaviours in labs on retention, persistence in the field,
and the formation of students' physics identity remains an open question. In
this study, we performed in-lab observations of student actions over two
semesters in two pedagogically different sections of the same introductory
physics course. We used a cluster analysis to identify different categories of
student behaviour and analyzed how they correlate with lab structure and
gender. We find that, in lab structures which fostered collaborative group work
and promoted decision making, there was a task division along gender lines with
respect to laptop and equipment usage (and found no such divide among students

WISE/NEOWISE Preliminary Analysis and Highlights of the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko Near Nucleus Environs
On January 18-19 and June 28-29 of 2010, the Wide-field Infrared Survey
Explorer (WISE) spacecraft imaged the Rosetta mission target, comet
67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. We present a preliminary analysis of the images,
which provide a characterization of the dust environment at heliocentric
distances similar to those planned for the initial spacecraft encounter, but on
the outbound leg of its orbit rather than the inbound. Broad-band photometry
yields low levels of CO2 production at a comet heliocentric distance of 3.32 AU
and no detectable production at 4.18 AU. We find that at these heliocentric
distances, large dust grains with mean grain diameters on the order of a
millimeter or greater dominate the coma and evolve to populate the tail. This
is further supported by broad-band photometry centered on the nucleus, which
yield an estimated differential dust particle size distribution with a power
law relation that is considerably shallower than average. We set a 3-sigma
upper limit constraint on the albedo of the large-grain dust at <= 0.12. Our
best estimate of the nucleus radius (1.82 +/- 0.20 km) and albedo (0.04 +/-
0.01) are in agreement with measurements previously reported in the literature

Emotional, motivational and attitudinal consequences of autonomous prosocial behaviour
When do prosocial actors experience positive versus negative psychological outcomes from helping others? In four studies and an internal meta-analysis, we tested the hypothesis that autonomy shapes the psychological consequences of helping others. In Study 1, prosocial behaviour was associated with a robust pattern of negative well-being outcomes (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress) for individuals low but not high in autonomy. In Studies 2–4, relative to reflecting on a neutral interpersonal experience, reflecting on an autonomous helping experience increased sadness and happiness, strengthened intentions to help in the future and raised support for social welfare. By contrast, reflecting on a controlled helping experience increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions, but did not affect attitudes or behavioural intentions. Collectively, the findings indicate that autonomy (or lack thereof) shapes the emotional, motivational and attitudinal consequences of helping behaviour
Bioactive Endophytes Warrant Intensified Exploration and Conservation
A key argument in favor of conserving biodiversity is that as yet undiscovered biodiversity will yield products of great use to humans. However, the link between undiscovered biodiversity and useful products is largely conjectural. Here we provide direct evidence from bioassays of endophytes isolated from tropical plants and bioinformatic analyses that novel biology will indeed yield novel chemistry of potential value.We isolated and cultured 135 endophytic fungi and bacteria from plants collected in Peru. nrDNAs were compared to samples deposited in GenBank to ascertain the genetic novelty of cultured specimens. Ten endophytes were found to be as much as 15–30% different than any sequence in GenBank. Phylogenetic trees, using the most similar sequences in GenBank, were constructed for each endophyte to measure phylogenetic distance. Assays were also conducted on each cultured endophyte to record bioactivity, of which 65 were found to be bioactive.The novelty of our contribution is that we have combined bioinformatic analyses that document the diversity found in environmental samples with culturing and bioassays. These results highlight the hidden hyperdiversity of endophytic fungi and the urgent need to explore and conserve hidden microbial diversity. This study also showcases how undergraduate students can obtain data of great scientific significance

Extratropical cyclones and the projected decline of winter Mediterranean precipitation in the CMIP5 models
The Mediterranean region has been identified as a climate change "hot-spot" due to a projected reduction in precipitation and fresh water availability which has potentially large socio-economic impacts. To increase confidence in these projections, it is important to physically understand how this precipitation reduction occurs. This study quantifies the impact on winter Mediterranean precipitation due to changes in extratropical cyclones in 17 CMIP5 climate models. In each model, the extratropical cyclones are objectively tracked and a simple approach is applied to identify the precipitation associated to each cyclone. This allows us to decompose the Mediterranean precipitation reduction into a contribution due to changes in the number of cyclones and a contribution due to changes in the amount of precipitation generated by each cyclone. The results show that the projected Mediterranean precipitation reduction in winter is strongly related to a decrease in the number of Mediterranean cyclones. However, the contribution from changes in the amount of precipitation generated by each cyclone are also locally important: in the East Mediterranean they amplify the precipitation trend due to the reduction in the number of cyclones, while in the North Mediterranean they compensate for it. CAL1 is the Drosophila CENP-A assembly factor
Centromeres are specified epigenetically by the incorporation of the histone H3 variant CENP-A. In humans, amphibians, and fungi, CENP-A is deposited at centromeres by the HJURP/Scm3 family of assembly factors, but homologues of these chaperones are absent from a number of major eukaryotic lineages such as insects, fish, nematodes, and plants. In Drosophila, centromeric deposition of CENP-A requires the fly-specific protein CAL1. Here, we show that targeting CAL1 to noncentromeric DNA in Drosophila cells is sufficient to heritably recruit CENP-A, kinetochore proteins, and microtubule attachments. CAL1 selectively interacts with CENP-A and is sufficient to assemble CENP-A nucleosomes that display properties consistent with left-handed octamers. The CENP-A assembly activity of CAL1 resides within an N-terminal domain, whereas the C terminus mediates centromere recognition through an interaction with CENP-C. Collectively, this work identifies the “missing” CENP-A chaperone in flies, revealing fundamental conservation between insect and vertebrate centromere-specification mechanisms
Chromatic periodic activity down to 120 MHz in a Fast Radio Burst
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extragalactic astrophysical transients whose
brightness requires emitters that are highly energetic, yet compact enough to
produce the short, millisecond-duration bursts. FRBs have thus far been
detected between 300 MHz and 8 GHz, but lower-frequency emission has remained
elusive. A subset of FRBs is known to repeat, and one of those sources, FRB
20180916B, does so with a 16.3 day activity period. Using simultaneous Apertif
and LOFAR data, we show that FRB 20180916B emits down to 120 MHz, and that its
activity window is both narrower and earlier at higher frequencies. Binary wind
interaction models predict a narrower periodic activity window at lower
frequencies, which is the opposite of our observations. Our detections
establish that low-frequency FRB emission can escape the local medium. For
bursts of the same fluence, FRB 20180916B is more active below 200 MHz than at
1.4 GHz. Combining our results with previous upper-limits on the all-sky FRB
rate at 150 MHz, we find that there are 3-450 FRBs/sky/day above 50 Jy ms at
90% confidence. We are able to rule out the scenario in which companion winds
cause FRB periodicity. We also demonstrate that some FRBs live in clean

Exploring the role of external experts in supporting staff to implement psychosocial interventions in care home settings: results from the process evaluation of a randomized controlled trial
Background: Psychosocial interventions offer opportunities to improve care for people with dementia in care homes. However, implementation is often led by staff who are not well prepared for the role. Some interventions use external experts to support staff. However little is known about external expert, care home staff and manager perceptions of such support. This paper addresses this gap. Methods: Multi-methods study within a process evaluation of a cluster randomised controlled trial of Dementia Care MappingTM (DCM). Interviews were conducted with six external experts who also completed questionnaires, 17 care home managers and 25 care home staff responsible for DCM implementation. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and template analysis. Results: Three themes were identified: the need for expert support, practicalities of support and broader impacts of providing support. Expert support was vital for successful DCM implementation, although the five-days provided was felt to be insufficient. Some homes felt the support was inflexible and did not consider their individual needs. Practical challenges of experts being located at a geographical distance from the care homes, limited when and how support was available. Experts gained knowledge they were able to then apply in delivering DCM training. Experts were not able to accurately predict which homes would be able to implement DCM independently in future cycles. Conclusions: An external expert may form a key component of successful implementation of psychosocial interventions in care home settings. Future research should explore optimal use of the expert role
