    Northern Music Culture in Antebellum New Orleans

    In the three decades before the Civil War, immigrants from the Northern United States flooded into New Orleans in search of new economic opportunities. These newcomers brought to the Southern city many elements of Northern life, such as Protestant churches, English-language newspapers, public schools, and distinct political views. They also brought with them musical practices specific to that region: Protestant church music, amateur choral societies, instrumental concerts, music publication, and English-language opera all flourished from the late 1830s until the late 1850s. This dissertation situates the musical practices of New Orleans during the decades preceding the Civil War within the larger context of American music history. Through an examination of new archival evidence, it demonstrates how these “Americans”—the term used at the time to distinguish the city’s English-speaking residents from its French-speaking inhabitants—recreated a musical culture similar to those they left behind in the North. These New Orleans residents participated in the burgeoning national system of sheet music publication, introduced musical instruction into the city’s newly minted public schools, and developed a performance tradition of sacred concert music similar to those in Boston and New York. Examining these aspects of New Orleans’s musical past offers important lessons about the nature of American musical identity in the antebellum era and sheds new light on the far-reaching influence of Northern culture in the age of Jacksonian democracy and westward expansion

    What Quality Management in Utah Mountain Streams: Several years of thorough monitoring of water quality parameters in Little Cottonwood Creek in Salt Lake County, Utah, measured the natural levels of the major water constituents, spotted significant (largely nonpoint) pollution sources, identified the pollutants deserving primary attention, and suggested the approaches to land and water management for pollution control in a mountain watershed used primarily for recreation purposes. Bacterial pollution is greater at night than during the day, on weekends than on week days, and in the summer than in the winter. Mineral content is of natural origin and largely explained by the passage of ground and surface waters through source geologic formations and aplified by the after effects of historic mining activity. Anion concentrations vary with underlying geology in a pattern that increases nitrate and sulfate and decreases phosphate concentrations while moving northwesterly through the basin. Acid is added by both mine drainage an dprecipitation. As to current human water quality impacts, runoff from roadside and other areas of construction is a varying source of sediment, but sediment concentrations are consistently high below major resort areas. Road salts are a major contributor of sodium chloride. Organic and fecal pollution originate from nonpoint soil sources contaminated by vegetation, wildlife, and human activities. Nitrates appear to come largely from natural sources. The toxic effect of mine drainage appears to reduce bacteria counts. Campgrounds, private cabins, and resorts were the primary source of fecal pollution that is considerably worse in the summer than in the winter. Ski areas are the lesser winter source as pollution levels fluctuate with visitor populations. Water quality may well be the most important limitation to the recreation carrying capacity of the canyon during the summer and fall. The most effective management program for pollution control may well be to limit summer recreation activities conducted apart from adequate sanitary facilities

    A multicenter, longitudinal, interventional, double blind randomized clinical trial in hematopoietic cell transplant recipients residing in remote areas: Lessons learned from the late cytomegalovirus prevention trial

    AbstractPurposeThe logistics of conducting double-blinded phase III clinical trials with participants residing in remote locations are complex. Here we describe the implementation of an interventional trial for the prevention of late cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) subjects in a long-term follow-up environment.MethodsA total of 184 subjects at risk for late CMV disease surviving 80 days following allogeneic HCT were randomized to receive six months of valganciclovir or placebo. Subjects were followed through day 270 post-transplant at their local physician's office within the United States. Anti-viral treatment interventions were based on CMV DNAemia as measured by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (>1000 copies/mL) and granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) was prescribed for neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count (ANC < 1.0 × 109 cells/L). Blood samples for viral testing and safety monitoring were shipped to a central laboratory by overnight carrier. Real-time communication was established between the coordinating center and study sites, primary care physicians, and study participants to facilitate starting, stopping and dose adjustments of antiviral drugs and G-CSF. The time required to make these interventions was analyzed.ResultsOf the 4169 scheduled blood specimens, 3832 (92%) were received and analyzed; the majority (97%) arriving at the central site within 2 days. Among subjects with positive CMV DNAemia (N = 46), over 50% received open label antiviral medication within one day. The median time to start G-CSF for neutropenia was <1 day after posting of laboratory results (range 0–6; N = 38). Study drug dose adjustments for abnormal renal function were implemented 203 times; within one day for 48% of cases and within 2 days for 80% of cases.ConclusionComplex randomized, double-blind, multicenter interventional trials with treatment decisions made at a central coordinating site can be conducted safely and effectively according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines over a large geographic area

    The Virgin River Basin Study: A Regional Approach to Multiobjective Planning for Water and Related Resources

    A joint research effort by the Utah Water Research Laboratory and the Nevado Center for Water Resources Research applied two multiobjective planning models to the Virgin River Basin in order to test the efficiency and practicality of applying such tools in water resrouces planning. The surrogate Worth Trade-off (SWT) method couples mathematical optimization to quantify trade offs among noncommensurable objectives with interviews to compare public preferences with respect to these trade offs. PROPDEMM uses information on interest group objectives, balues, willingness to pay, influence, lebel of information, etc. to compare the political feasibility of alternative courses of action. Both models were applied to assess the difficulties in doing so and the usefulness of the results. The trade offs identified by the SWT method showed agricultural water use to be so dominant in the basin that slight adjustments in irrigation efficiency could supply all foreseeable needs for additional water for other uses, such trade offs to be too inconsequential to identify and compare public preferences, and other trade offs to be impossible because of the position taken by ecologists that any environmental change would destroy a rare species of minnow. Prior to analyzing a situation by the SWT method, the planner should make sure that the trade offs will be of a magnitude meaningful to the public and that the model selected will be sufficiently refined in analyzing small units in time and space to identify locally significant trade offs. PROPDEMM showed the politically most controversial trade off to be between construction of energy generating facilities and life support for the minnow, a controbersy that would probably be decided in favor of the environmentalist because of their power and non-openness to change. Improvements to the model to do a better job of interfacing environmental with social data were recommended. Social modeling in such low population areas was found to be restricted by laws against disclosure of private information because of the very small numbers of individuals living in many evaluation units

Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol 279: H2464-H2476, 2000.-Our goal was to establish normal values for quantitative color kinesis indexes of left ventricular (LV) wall motion over a wide range of ages, which are required for objective diagnosis of regional systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Color-encoded images were obtained in 194 normal subjects (95 males, 99 females, age 2 mo to 79 yr) in four standard views. Quantitative indexes of magnitude and timing of systolic and diastolic function were studied for age-and genderrelated differences. Normal limits of all ejection and filling indexes were in a narrow range (Ő…25% of the mean), with no major gender-related differences. Despite invariable ejection fractions, both peak filling and ejection rates decreased with age (30 and 20%, correspondingly) with a concomitant increase in mean filling and ejection times, resulting in fiveand twofold increases in the late to early filling and ejection ratios, correspondingly. Diastolic asynchrony increased with age (from 4.7 Ď® 2.0 to 6.4 Ď® 3.2 from the 2nd to 7th decade). Accordingly, normal values of different indexes of magnitude and timing of global and regional LV function derived from color kinesis images need to be established to allow objective detection of abnormalities with a high level of confidence. We also hypothesized that these indexes may be age and gender dependent, in which case normal values would need to be established for different demographic groups. Accordingly, the purpose of this collaborative multicenter effort was to establish normal values for magnitude and timing indexes of wall motion by acquiring and analyzing systolic and diastolic color kinesis images in a large group of normal subjects of both sexes over a wide range of ages.     Astro2020 APC White Paper: The Early Career Perspective on the Coming Decade, Astrophysics Career Paths, and the Decadal Survey Process

    In response to the need for the Astro2020 Decadal Survey to explicitly engage early career astronomers, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the Early Career Astronomer and Astrophysicist Focus Session (ECFS) on October 8-9, 2018 under the auspices of Committee of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The meeting was attended by fifty six pre-tenure faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral scholars, and senior graduate students, as well as eight former decadal survey committee members, who acted as facilitators. The event was designed to educate early career astronomers about the decadal survey process, to solicit their feedback on the role that early career astronomers should play in Astro2020, and to provide a forum for the discussion of a wide range of topics regarding the astrophysics career path. This white paper presents highlights and themes that emerged during two days of discussion. In Section 1, we discuss concerns that emerged regarding the coming decade and the astrophysics career path, as well as specific recommendations from participants regarding how to address them. We have organized these concerns and suggestions into five broad themes. These include (sequentially): (1) adequately training astronomers in the statistical and computational techniques necessary in an era of "big data", (2) responses to the growth of collaborations and telescopes, (3) concerns about the adequacy of graduate and postdoctoral training, (4) the need for improvements in equity and inclusion in astronomy, and (5) smoothing and facilitating transitions between early career stages. Section 2 is focused on ideas regarding the decadal survey itself, including: incorporating early career voices, ensuring diverse input from a variety of stakeholders, and successfully and broadly disseminating the results of the survey

    A radio spectral index map and catalogue at 147-1400 MHz covering 80 per cent of the sky

    The radio spectral index is a powerful probe for classifying cosmic radio sources and understanding the origin of the radio emission. Combining data at 147 MHz and 1.4 GHz from the TIFR GMRT Sky Survey (TGSS) and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), we produced a large-area radio spectral index map of ~80 per cent of the sky (Dec. &gt; - 40 deg), as well as a radio spectral index catalogue containing 1396 515 sources, of which 503 647 are not upper or lower limits. Almost every TGSS source has a detected counterpart, while this is true only for 36 per cent of NVSS sources. We released both the map and the catalogue to the astronomical community. The catalogue is analysed to discover systematic behaviours in the cosmic radio population. We find a differential spectral behaviour between faint and bright sources as well as between compact and extended sources. These trends are explained in terms of radio galaxy evolution. We also confirm earlier reports of an excess of steep-spectrum sources along the galactic plane. This corresponds to 86 compact and steep-spectrum source in excess compared to expectations. The properties of this excess are consistent with normal non-recycled pulsars, which may have been missed by pulsation searches due to larger than average scattering along the line of sight

Incorporating fisher and industry knowledge holds prospects for improving marine science and fisheries management. We address cooperative research in the context of collaboration between fishers, scientists, industries, universities, and agencies to develop applied research to understand marine ecosystems, inform fishery management, enhance sustainability, govern resource use, and investigate social-economic dynamics. We leverage the insights of more than 100 research scientists, fisheries managers, industry representatives, and fishers to outline actionable recommendations for effective approaches and mechanisms to integrate industry data, perspectives, and insights in fisheries science.
