Relativistic Structure of the Deuteron: 1.Electro-disintegration and y-scaling
Realistic solutions of the spinor-spinor Bethe-Salpeter equation for the
deuteron with realistic interaction kernel including the exchange of pi, sigma,
omega, rho, eta and delta mesons, are used to systematically investigate
relativistic effects in inclusive quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering
within the relativistic impulse approximation. Relativistic y-scaling is
considered by generalising the non relativistic scaling function to the
relativistic case, and it is shown that y-scaling does occur in the usual
relativistic scaling variable resulting from the energy conservation in the
instant form of dynamics. The present approach of y-scaling is fully covariant,
with the deuteron being described by eight components, viz. the 3S_1^{++},
3S_1^{--}, 3D_1^{++}, 3D_1^{--}, 3P_1^{+-}, 3P_1^{-+}, 1P_1^{+-}, 1P_1^{-+}
waves. It is demonstrated that if the negative relative energy states 1P_1,
3P_1 are disregarded, the concept of covariant momentum distributions N(p_0,p),
with p_0=M_D/2-\sqrt{p^2+m^2}, can be introduced, and that calculations of
lectro-disintegration cross section in terms of these distributions agree
within few percents with the exact calculations which include the 1P_1, 3P_1
states, provided the nucleon three momentum |p|\<= 1 GeV/c; in this momentum
range, the asymptotic relativistic scaling function is shown to coincide with

On isovector meson exchange currents in the Bethe-Salpeter approach
We investigate the nonrelativistic reduction of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude
for the deuteron electrodisintegration near threshold energies. To this end,
two assumptions have been used in the calculations: 1) the static approximation
and 2) the one iteration approximation. Within these assumptions it is possible
to recover the nonrelativistic result including a systematic extension to
relativistic corrections. We find that the so-called pair current term can be
constructed from the -wave contribution of the deuteron Bethe-Salpeter
amplitude. The form factor that enters into the calculation of the pair current
is constrained by the manifestly gauge independent matrix elements.Comment: 15 pages, incl. 3 figures, to be published Phys. Rev.
Consistent Treatment of Relativistic Effects in Electrodisintegration of the Deuteron
The influence of relativistic contributions to deuteron electrodisintegration
is systematically studied in various kinematic regions of energy and momentum
transfer. As theoretical framework the equation-of-motion and the unitarily
equivalent S-matrix approaches are used. In a (p/M)-expansion, all leading
order relativistic -exchange contributions consistent with the Bonn OBEPQ
model are included. In addition, static heavy meson exchange currents including
boost terms, -currents, and -isobar contributions
are considered. Sizeable effects from the various relativistic two-body
contributions, mainly from -exchange, have been found in inclusive form
factors and exclusive structure functions for a variety of kinematic regions.Comment: 41 pages revtex including 15 postscript figure
Double parton correlations and constituent quark models: a light front approach to the valence sector
An explicit evaluation of the double parton distribution functions (dPDFs), within a relativistic Light-Front approach to constituent quark models, is presented. dPDFs encode information on the correlations between two partons inside a target and represent the non-perturbative QCD ingredient for the description of double parton scattering in proton-proton collisions, a crucial issue in the search of new Physics at the LHC. Valence dPDFs are evaluated at the low scale of the model and the perturbative scale of the experiments is reached by means of QCD evolution. The present results show that the strong correlation effects present at the scale of the model are still sizable, in the valence region, at the experimental scale. At the low values of x presently studied at the LHC the correlations become less relevant, although they are still important for the spin-dependent contributions to unpolarized proton scattering
Identification of Giardia lamblia DHHC Proteins and the Role of Protein S-palmitoylation in the Encystation Process
Protein S-palmitoylation, a hydrophobic post-translational modification, is performed by protein acyltransferases that have a common DHHC Cys-rich domain (DHHC proteins), and provides a regulatory switch for protein membrane association. In this work, we analyzed the presence of DHHC proteins in the protozoa parasite Giardia lamblia and the function of the reversible S-palmitoylation of proteins during parasite differentiation into cyst. Two specific events were observed: encysting cells displayed a larger amount of palmitoylated proteins, and parasites treated with palmitoylation inhibitors produced a reduced number of mature cysts. With bioinformatics tools, we found nine DHHC proteins, potential protein acyltransferases, in the Giardia proteome. These proteins displayed a conserved structure when compared to different organisms and are distributed in different monophyletic clades. Although all Giardia DHHC proteins were found to be present in trophozoites and encysting cells, these proteins showed a different intracellular localization in trophozoites and seemed to be differently involved in the encystation process when they were overexpressed. dhhc transgenic parasites showed a different pattern of cyst wall protein expression and yielded different amounts of mature cysts when they were induced to encyst. Our findings disclosed some important issues regarding the role of DHHC proteins and palmitoylation during Giardia encystation.Fil: Merino, Maria Cecilia. Ecoregional Analysis of Nearshore Sea-Surface Temperature in the North Pacific
The quantification and description of sea surface temperature (SST) is critically important because it can influence the distribution, migration, and invasion of marine species; furthermore, SSTs are expected to be affected by climate change. To better understand present temperature regimes, we assembled a 29-year nearshore time series of mean monthly SSTs along the North Pacific coastline using remotely-sensed satellite data collected with the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument. We then used the dataset to describe nearshore (<20 km offshore) SST patterns of 16 North Pacific ecoregions delineated by the Marine Ecoregions of the World (MEOW) hierarchical schema. Annual mean temperature varied from 3.8°C along the Kamchatka ecoregion to 24.8°C in the Cortezian ecoregion. There are smaller annual ranges and less variability in SST in the Northeast Pacific relative to the Northwest Pacific. Within the 16 ecoregions, 31–94% of the variance in SST is explained by the annual cycle, with the annual cycle explaining the least variation in the Northern California ecoregion and the most variation in the Yellow Sea ecoregion. Clustering on mean monthly SSTs of each ecoregion showed a clear break between the ecoregions within the Warm and Cold Temperate provinces of the MEOW schema, though several of the ecoregions contained within the provinces did not show a significant difference in mean seasonal temperature patterns. Comparison of these temperature patterns shared some similarities and differences with previous biogeographic classifications and the Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs). A Multigenerational View of Inequality
The study of intergenerational mobility and most population research are governed by a two-generation (parent-to-offspring) view of intergenerational influence, to the neglect of the effects of grandparents and other ancestors and nonresident contemporary kin. While appropriate for some populations in some periods, this perspective may omit important sources of intergenerational continuity of family-based social inequality. Social institutions, which transcend individual lives, help support multigenerational influence, particularly at the extreme top and bottom of the social hierarchy, but to some extent in the middle as well. Multigenerational influence also works through demographic processes because families influence subsequent generations through differential fertility and survival, migration, and marriage patterns, as well as through direct transmission of socioeconomic rewards, statuses, and positions. Future research should attend more closely to multigenerational effects; to the tandem nature of demographic and socioeconomic reproduction; and to data, measures, and models that transcend coresident nuclear families
Exchange hazards, relational reliability, and contracts in China: The contingent role of legal enforceability
Building on institutional and transaction cost economics, this article proposes that legal enforceability increases the use of contract over relational reliability (e.g., beliefs that the other party acts in a non-opportunistic manner) to safeguard market exchanges characterized by non-trivial hazards. The results of 399 buyer-supplier exchanges in China show that: (1) when managers perceive that the legal system can protect their firm's interests, they tend to use explicit contracts rather than relational reliability to safeguard transactions involving risks (i.e., asset specificity, environmental uncertainty, and behavioral uncertainty); and (2) when managers do not perceive the legal system as credible, they are less likely to use contracts, and instead rely on relational reliability to safeguard transactions associated with specialized assets and environmental uncertainty, but not those involving behavioral uncertainty. We further find that legal enforceability does not moderate the effect of relational reliability on contracts, but does weaken the effect of contracts on relational reliability. These results endorse the importance of prior experience (e.g., relational reliability) in supporting the use of explicit contracts, and alternatively suggest that, under conditions of greater legal enforceability, the contract signals less regarding one's intention to be trustworthy but more about the efficacy of sanctions. © 2010 Academy of International Business All rights reserved.postprin
