    Elucidating the effect of mass transport resistances on hydrogen crossover and cell performance in PEM water electrolyzers by varying the cathode ionomer content

    An important challenge for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is to reduce the permeation of the produced gases. This crossover affects the cell efficiency and causes safety issues. The crossover increases with current density, most probably due to mass transfer resistances. This work aims to investigate the influence of the cathode ionomer content on hydrogen crossover. Therefore, the ionomer content was varied between 10 and 40 wt% to clearly influence the mass transfer resistances. The best performance and lowest crossover was obtained for 10 wt% ionomer. However, within the observed ionomer range the mass transfer resistances increase with ionomer content that cause increases in hydrogen crossover and cell voltage. Both can be entirely explained by the same quantity of supersaturated dissolved hydrogen concentrations. These supersaturated concentrations cause higher cathode half-cell potentials, which explain the cell voltage increase and lead to higher concentration gradients across the membrane, which enhance the crossover. These findings highlight the importance of mass transfer resistances within catalyst layers in terms of crossover and performance. They constitute an important step in the clarification of the complex interplay between mass transport and voltage losses, enabling the development of novel electrode architectures for PEM water electrolyzers. © The Author(s) 2019

    Fire and plant diversification in mediterranean-climate regions

    Despite decades of broad interest in global patterns of biodiversity, little attention has been given to understanding the remarkable levels of plant diversity present in the world’s five Mediterranean-type climate (MTC) regions, all of which are considered to be biodiversity hotspots. Comprising the Mediterranean Basin, California, central Chile, the Cape Region of South Africa, and southwestern Australia, these regions share the unusual climatic regime of mild wet winters and warm dry summers. Despite their small extent, covering only about 2.2% of world land area, these regions are home to approximately one-sixth of the world vascular plant flora. The onset of MTCs in the middle Miocene brought summer drought, a novel climatic condition, but also a regime of recurrent fire. Fire has been a significant agent of selection in assembling the modern floras of four of the five MTC regions, with central Chile an exception following the uplift of the Andes in the middle Miocene. Selection for persistence in a fire-prone environment as a key causal factor for species diversification in MTC regions has been under-appreciated or ignored. Mechanisms for fire-driven speciation are diverse and may include both directional (novel traits) and stabilizing selection (retained traits) for appropriate morphological and life-history traits. Both museum and nursery hypotheses have important relevance in explaining the extant species richness of the MTC floras, with fire as a strong stimulant for diversification in a manner distinct from other temperate floras. Spatial and temporal niche separation across topographic, climatic and edaphic gradients has occurred in all five regions. The Mediterranean Basin, California, and central Chile are seen as nurseries for strong but not spectacular rates of Neogene diversification, while the older landscapes of southwestern Australia and the Cape Region show significant components of both Paleogene and younger Neogene speciation in their diversity. Low rates of extinction suggesting a long association with fire more than high rates of speciation have been key to the extant levels of species richness

    Seed production of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) in response to time of emergence in cotton and rice

    The spread of herbicide resistance in barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.) poses a serious threat to crop production in the southern United States. A thorough knowledge of the biology of barnyardgrass is fundamental for designing effective resistance-management programmes. In the present study, seed production of barnyardgrass in response to time of emergence was investigated in cotton and rice, respectively, in Fayetteville and Rohwer, Arkansas, over a 2-year period (2008–09). Barnyardgrass seed production was greater when seedlings emerged with the crop, but some seed production was observed even if seedlings emerged several weeks after crop emergence. Moreover, barnyardgrass seed production was highly variable across environments. When emerging with the crop (0 weeks after crop emergence (WAE)), barnyardgrass produced c. 35 500 and 16 500 seeds/plant in cotton, and c. 39 000 and 2900 seeds/plant in rice, in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Seed production was observed when seedlings emerged up to 5 WAE (2008) or 7 WAE (2009) in cotton and up to 5 WAE (2008, 2009) in rice; corresponding seed production was c. 2500 and 1500 seeds/plant in cotton, and c. 14 700 and 110 seeds/plant in rice, in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The results suggest that cultural approaches that delay the emergence of barnyardgrass or approaches that make the associated crop more competitive will be useful in integrated management programmes. In the context of herbicide resistance management, it may be valuable to prevent seed return to the seedbank, irrespective of cohorts.     Healthcare workers (HCW) are potentially at increased risk of infection with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and may transmit severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to vulnerable patients. We present results from staff testing at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, United Kingdom. Between 16 and 29 March 2020, 1,533 symptomatic HCW were tested, of whom 282 (18%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2. Testing HCW is a crucial strategy to optimise staffing levels during this outbreak

    Based on an approach recently proposed by us, simultaneous χ2\chi^{2}-analyses are performed for elastic scattering, direct reaction (DR) and fusion cross sections data for the 6^{6}He+209^{209}Bi system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies to determine the parameters of the polarization potential consisting of DR and fusion parts. We show that the data are well reproduced by the resultant potential, which also satisfies the proper dispersion relation.     Evaluation of azlocillin in-vitro and in discriminative animal models of infection

    Azlocillin was more active in vitro than ticarcillin or carbenicillin against 561 aminoglycoside-resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa collected from 74 hospitals distributed over a wide geographic area in the eastern United States. Azlocillin was compared with various other antimicrobial agents in discriminative animal models of Ps. aeruginosa pyelonephritis, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, and meningitis in a variety of mammalian species. Cefsulodin was more effective than azlocillin in reducing Ps. aeruginosa kidney concentrations in rat pyelonephritis induced by intrarenal inoculation. The mean±s.d. logl0 cfu/g kidney after three days of therapy were as follows: controls = 5.4±1.5, azlocillin = 4.4±1.8, cefsulodin = 2.6±0.9 (P < 0.01) but the MBC for the test strain was eight-fold higher for azlocillin (8 vs. 1 mg/l) and effective concentrations were maintained longer in rat serum for cefsulodin as against azlocillin. In addition, ticarcillin reduced kidney bacterial concentrations faster than azlocillin in a mouse pyelonephritis model induced by intravenous Ps. aeruginosa inoculation with subsequent iron loading. Azlocillin was less effective than tobramycin in experimental chronic Ps. aeruginosa osteomyelitis induced in rabbits by direct injection into the tibia. An azlocillin-tobramycin regimen was not more effective than tobramycin alone. After 28 days of therapy, the percentages of positive bone cultures after death were as follows: no antibiotic (controls) = 92%, azlocillin = 95%, tobramycin = 76%, azlocillin plus tobramycin = 60%. Both ticarcillin and azlocillin were less active than tobramycin in experimental Ps. aeruginosa endocarditis induced in rabbits by intravenous inoculation of 108 cfu following 1 h of catheter induced aortic valve trauma. The best results were noted with an azlocillin-tobramycin regimen. The mean±s.d. log10 cfu Ps. aeruginosa/g vegetation after five days of therapy were as follows: no antibiotic controls = 8.1 ± 1.1, tobramycin = 4.5 ±0.8, ticarcillin = 6.9 ± 0.8, azlocillin = 5.7 ± 1.5, ticarcillin phis tobramycin = 4.9 ± 1.0, azlocillin plus tobramycin = 3.3 ± 1.6. Sterile vegetations were rarely attained with any regimen. The mean percentage penetration into purulent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in experimental Ps. aeruginosa meningitis for azlocillin was 13.3%, comparable to many other β-lactam antibiotics. Azlocillin was the single most active (P < 0.01) agent evaluated after 8 h intravenous infusions in this model. An azlocillin-amikacin regimen was more rapidly bactericidal (P < 0.01) than either agent alone in vivo.     State education as high-yield investment: human capital theory in European policy discourse

    Human Capital Theory has been an increasingly important phenomenon in economic thought over the last 50 years. The central role it affords to education has become even more marked in recent years as the concept of the ‘knowledge economy’ has become a global concern. In this paper, the prevalence of Human Capital Theory within European educational policy discourse is explored. The paper examines a selection of policy documents from a number of disparate European national contexts and considers the extent to which the ideas of Human Capital Theory can be seen to be influential. In the second part of the paper, the implications of Human Capital Theory for education are considered, with a particular focus on the possible ramifications at a time of economic austerity. The paper argues that Human Capital Theory risks offering a diminished view of the person, a diminished view of education, but that with its sole focus on economic goals leaves room for educationists and others to argue for the educational, social, and moral values it ignores, and for the conception of the good life and good society it fails to mention
