    Contesting Resources - Rent Seeking, Conflict and the Natural Resource Curse

    A growing empirical literature links natural resource abundance and "pointiness" to impeded economic growth and civil strife. We develop rent seeking and conflict models that capture the most salient features of contests for resource rents, and show how both resource abundance and geographical clustering can be associated with intense contests and sub-optimal economic performance. However, we also show that these relationships are not necessarily monotonous { pointiness can trigger more intense contests but can also facilitate the coordination on peaceful outcomes. Finally we show that contesting resources through violent conflict may yield superior outcomes (from an economy-wide perspective) than contests through rent seeking. --point resources,civil war,economic growth and resources

    Nitrate Contamination of Groundwater: Determinants and Indicators

    Nitrogen is an important input to agricultural production but also detrimentally affects the environmental quality of air, soil and water. Identifying the determinants of nitrate pollution and in turn defining sensible performance indicators to design, enforce and monitor regulatory policies is therefore of utmost importance. Using data on more than 1000 Austrian municipalities, we provide a detailed econometric analysis of (1) the determinants of nitrate concentration in groundwater, and (2) the predictive abilities of one of the most commonly used agri-environmental indicators, the Nitrogen Balance. We find that the proportion of cropland exerts a positive effect on the nitrate content in groundwater. Additionally, environmental factors such as temperature and precipitation are found to be important. Higher average temperature leads to lower nitrate pollution of groundwater possibly due to increased evapotranspiration. Equally, higher average precipitation dilutes nitrate content in the soil, reducing nitrate concentration in groundwater. To assess the Nitrogen Balance, we link observed pollution levels to the theoretical indicator and evaluate its ability to measure nitrate pollution effects. Indeed, the indicator proves to be a good predictor for nitrate pollution. We also show that its predictive power can be improved if average precipitation of a region is taken into account.     Therapeutic options in recurrent glioblastoma-An update

    INTRODUCTION Standards of care are not yet defined in recurrent glioblastoma. METHODS We reviewed the literature on clinical trials for recurrent glioblastoma available in PubMed and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) abstracts until June 2015. RESULTS Evidence is limited due to the paucity of randomized controlled studies. Second surgery or re-irradiation are options for selected patients. Alkylating chemotherapy such as nitrosoureas or temozolomide and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibody, bevacizumab, exhibit comparable single agent activity. Phase III data exploring the benefit of combining bevacizumab and lomustine are emerging. Novel approaches in the fields of targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and tumor metabolism are coming forward. Several biomarkers are being explored, but, except for O(6)-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation, none has assumed a role in clinical practice. CONCLUSION Proper patient selection, development of predictive biomarkers and randomized controlled studies are required to develop evidence-based concepts for recurrent glioblastoma

    Primary prevention of eating-related problems in the real world

    Aim: As known from meta-analyses, prevention programs for eating disorders yield significant effects under ideal conditions. However, it is still unclear how these programs can be more widely disseminated. Since 2004 in Thuringia, Germany, several programs for preadolescent girls and boys (aged 10 to 15 years) covering a wide geographical range have been developed in order to prevent eating-related problems. Subjects and Methods: Over 3,500 pupils and more than 100 schools participated in the internal evaluation following the three-step standard of the Society of Prevention Research (SPR). To examine the program efficacy (step 1) and effectiveness (step 2), we conducted pre-post design studies with control groups. In order to describe the implementation process and the program dissemination (step 3), the Health Promoting School Approach (HEPS) was applied. Results: Girls (6th grade) showed significant improvements in eating attitudes and self esteem about their bodies, whereas boys only improved their knowledge about eating and physical activity. The evaluations of the programs for 7th and 8th graders are still pending. On the HEPS checklist, our health promotion concept fulfilled 64 points out of a maximum of 74, which indicates a high intervention quality. Conclusion: Broad dissemination of prevention programs requires methodological compromises and organizational flexibility. Quality assurance should be considered to be as important as the optimal level of evidence, which depends on the needs of all stakeholders and could not be derived from the standards for clinical studies. Furthermore, health promotion needs political support that is independent of legislative periods and the turnover of institutional staff

    Lymphotoxin β receptor signaling promotes tertiary lymphoid organogenesis in the aorta adventitia of aged ApoE−/− mice

    Atherosclerosis involves a macrophage-rich inflammation in the aortic intima. It is increasingly recognized that this intimal inflammation is paralleled over time by a distinct inflammatory reaction in adjacent adventitia. Though cross talk between the coordinated inflammatory foci in the intima and the adventitia seems implicit, the mechanism(s) underlying their communication is unclear. Here, using detailed imaging analysis, microarray analyses, laser-capture microdissection, adoptive lymphocyte transfers, and functional blocking studies, we undertook to identify this mechanism. We show that in aged apoE−/− mice, medial smooth muscle cells (SMCs) beneath intimal plaques in abdominal aortae become activated through lymphotoxin β receptor (LTβR) to express the lymphorganogenic chemokines CXCL13 and CCL21. These signals in turn trigger the development of elaborate bona fide adventitial aortic tertiary lymphoid organs (ATLOs) containing functional conduit meshworks, germinal centers within B cell follicles, clusters of plasma cells, high endothelial venules (HEVs) in T cell areas, and a high proportion of T regulatory cells. Treatment of apoE−/− mice with LTβR-Ig to interrupt LTβR signaling in SMCs strongly reduced HEV abundance, CXCL13, and CCL21 expression, and disrupted the structure and maintenance of ATLOs. Thus, the LTβR pathway has a major role in shaping the immunological characteristics and overall integrity of the arterial wall

    The Resource Curse and Rentier States in the Caspian Region : A Need for Context Analysis

    Although much attention is paid to the Caspian region with regard to energy issues, the domestic consequences of the region’s resource production have so far constituted a neglected field of research. A systematic survey of the latest research trends in the economic and political causalities of the resource curse and of rentier states reveals that there is a need for context analysis. In reference to this, the paper traces any shortcomings and promising approaches in the existent body of literature on the Caspian region. Following on from this, the paper then proposes a new approach; specifically, one in which any differences and similarities in the context conditions are captured. This enables a more precise exploration of the exact ways in which they form contemporary post-Soviet Caspian rentier states.Obwohl der Region am Kaspischen Meer im Zuge von Energiediskursen große Aufmerksamkeit zuteil wird, stellen die innerstaatlichen Folgen der Ressourcenproduktion in der Region ein bislang vernachlässigtes Forschungsfeld dar. Ein systematischer Überblick über die jüngsten Forschungstrends zu wirtschaftlichen und politischen Kausalzusammenhängen des Ressourcenfluchs und zu Rentierstaaten offenbart die Notwendigkeit von Kontextanalysen. Hierauf Bezug nehmend, analysiert der Aufsatz sowohl die Mängel als auch viel versprechende Ansätze in der betreffenden Literatur zur Region am Kaspischen Meer. Der Aufsatz stellt letztendlich einen neuen Ansatz vor, der Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten in den Kontextbedingungen erfasst, um zu erforschen, wie diese die gegenwärtigen post-sowjetischen Rentierstaaten in der Region am Kaspischen Meer tatsächlich prägen
