    ACCULTURATION OF ASIAN INDIAN WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES

    The United States is home to nearly three million Asian Indians. The difference in Asian Indian and American cultures creates a need for Asian Indians to acculturate, upon migration to the U.S. It has been theorized that acculturation becomes harder when the two cultures of contact are dissimilar. Particularly, immigrant women and children have been found to be more vulnerable than men to acculturative stress, where acculturative stress is defined as the psychological impact of adaptation to a new culture. Hence, this study focuses on acculturation of Asian Indian women and specifically on factors influencing their acculturation. Research findings from this study on acculturation of Asian Indian women provide information, useful for public policy makers. They have been utilized to develop a program (used by settlement service providers) designed specifically to facilitate acculturation of Asian Indian women in the U.S. A two-dimensional model developed by J.W. Berry, a prominent researcher in the field of acculturation, is employed to classify the acculturation process of Asian Indian women who were part of this study. Based on Berry’s model, the acculturation process of an immigrant can be described by one of the following four strategies: 1) Assimilation, 2) Integration, 3) Separation, or 4) Marginalization. According to Berry, the Integration strategy is considered the most effective acculturation strategy in terms of long-term health and wellbeing of the individual. This study employed a cross-sectional design, using quantitative methods for data analysis. Data were collected by means of a web-based acculturation survey that was developed as part of the study. Data analysis indicated that a majority of the Asian Indian women adopted the Integration strategy. A conceptual model was developed and multivariate analyses were conducted to examine the key acculturation factors that influenced Asian Indian women using the Integration strategy. These identified key factors helped to understand the cultural adaptation of Asian Indian women

    Multifunctional wearable epidermal device for physiological signal monitoring in sleep study

    Sleep is the essential part of life. Thousands of people are suffering from different kinds sleep disorders. Clinical diagnosing and treating for such disorders are costly, painful and quite sluggish. To reach the demand many commercial products are into the market to encourage home based sleep studies using portable devices. These portable devices are limited in use, cannot be handled easily and quite costly. Advancements in technology miniaturized these portable devices to wearable devices to make them convenient and economical. Elastic, soft and thin silicon membrane with physical properties well matched with that of the epidermis provides conformal and robust contact with the skin. Integration of an elastic and flexible electronics to such a membrane provides an epidermal electronic system (EES) that can enhance the robustness in operation for electrophysiological signal measurement. Biocompatible and non-invasive over the skin are the advantages of this class of technology that lie beyond those available with conventional, point-contact electrode interfaces to the skin. Recording of various long-term physiological signals relevant in various sleep studies can be performed using this multifunctional device.     INVESTIGATION OF TRANSFER TECHNIQUE BIOMECHANICS AMONG PERSONS WITH TETRAPLEGIA AND PARAPLEGIA

    Due to lower limb paralysis people with SCI rely heavily on their upper extremities (UEs) for performing activities of daily living (ADL) of which wheelchair transfers lists as one of the ADL’s that are particularly taxing on the UEs. Preservation of UE function is extremely important to maintain independence and quality of life amongst people with Spinal Cord Injury. Although the Paralyzed Veterans of America developed Clinical Practice Guidelines to preserve UE function, limited research/recommendations are available for optimal transfer strategies that reduce loading on UE joints. Specific aims of this dissertation were to 1) Describe biomechanical strategies for preferred methods of transferring amongst persons with paraplegia and tetraplegia (Chapter 2), 2) Determine how taught transfer techniques and self-selected transferring reduce mechanical loading at the UE (Chapter 3), 3) Investigate how upper limb strength and balance impact loading at the UE joints during transfers (Chapter 4). 20 participants took part in the study, only 18 (17 male and 1 female) could execute the taught techniques. The group consisted of 12 persons with paraplegia (6 with complete & 6 with incomplete injury) and 6 with tetraplegia (all with incomplete injury). A custom transfer measurement system was used to capture kinetic and kinematic measures of the UEs and feet while participants performed wheelchair transfers. Participants performed self-selected transfers & three transfer techniques that varied on leading hand placement and trunk flexion. Functional measures recorded included: Strength, balance, anthropometrics and pain scores. Comparison of mechanical loading between the group with paraplegia and tetraplegia shed light on potential risk of injuries that may occur for each individual group. Taught technique comparison pointed towards a tradeoff, among force and moment components, at the leading and trailing arms, influenced by leading hand placement compared to amount of trunk flexion. Primarily a modified trunk upright technique was employed, trunk remained upright and hand placed close to the body, as preferred method of transferring. Impact of functional measures on transfer kinetics showed that transfer strategy may override functional capacity. Findings of this study will assist in refining clinical practice guidelines on safe level sitting pivot transfer strategies

    A conceptual framework to assess effectiveness in wheelchair provision

    Background: Currently, inadequate wheelchair provision has forced many people with disabilities to be trapped in a cycle of poverty and deprivation, limiting their ability to access education, work and social facilities. This issue is in part because of the lack of collaboration among various stakeholders who need to work together to design, manufacture and deliver such assistive mobility devices. This in turn has led to inadequate evidence about intervention effectiveness, disability prevalence and subsequent costeffectiveness that would help facilitate appropriate provision and support for people with disabilities. Objectives: In this paper, we describe a novel conceptual framework that can be tested across the globe to study and evaluate the effectiveness of wheelchair provision. Method: The Comparative Effectiveness Research Subcommittee (CER-SC), consisting of the authors of this article, housed within the Evidence-Based Practice Working Group (EBP-WG) of the International Society of Wheelchair Professionals (ISWP), conducted a scoping review of scientific literature and standard practices used during wheelchair service provision. The literature review was followed by a series of discussion groups. Results: The three iterations of the conceptual framework are described in this manuscript. Conclusion: We believe that adoption of this conceptual framework could have broad applications in wheelchair provision globally to develop evidence-based practices. Such a perspective will help in the comparison of different strategies employed in wheelchair provision and further improve clinical guidelines. Further work is being conducted to test the efficacy of this conceptual framework to evaluate effectiveness of wheelchair service provision in various settings across the globe

    Association of Hip Bone Mineral Density and Body Composition in a Rural Indian Population:The Andhra Pradesh Children and Parents Study (APCAPS)

    BACKGROUND: Fat mass is variably associated with bone mass, possibly due to differential mechanical and biological effects of fat mass. We examined the association of fat mass with bone mass in a lean population. OBJECTIVE: To investigate association between hip bone mineral density and fat and lean mass in a cross-sectional study from southern India. DESIGN: The Andhra Pradesh Children and Parents Study is a prospective cohort study in Hyderabad, India. In 2009-2012, the study collected data on anthropometric measures, bone mineral density (BMD), fat mass, and lean mass measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, and socioeconomic data of the adult participants (n = 1760; mean age = 34.9 years old for women; 2130 and 32.3 for men). RESULTS: The median BMI (kg/m2) was 20.1 kg/m2. Women had relatively higher fat mass as compared to men. In models adjusted for lean mass, there was an association between hip bone mineral density and fat mass in women (β (95% confidence interval): premenopausal 0.025 (0.006 to 0.045); postmenopausal 0.045 (0.014 to 0.076)) but not in men (0.001 (-0.012 to 0.0014)). The association between hip BMD and fat mass was stronger in postmenopausal than premenopausal women. Hip BMD was consistently associated with lean mass, in both men and women. CONCLUSIONS: In this relatively lean population, lean mass was more consistently associated with hip BMD than fat mass. Weight gain through lean mass improvement may be a more reliable public health strategy for strengthening bone health in transitional settings

    Characterization of structure and function of the mouse retina using pattern electroretinography, pupil light reflex, and optical coherence tomography

    Objective  To perform in vivo analysis of retinal functional and structural parameters in healthy mouse eyes. Animal Studied  Adult C57BL/6 male mice (n = 37). Procedures  Retinal function was evaluated using pattern electroretinography (pERG) and the chromatic pupil light reflex (cPLR). Structural properties of the retina and nerve fiber layer (NFL) were evaluated using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Results  The average pERG amplitudes were found to be 11.2 ± 0.7 μV (P50-N95, mean ± SEM), with an implicit time for P50-N95 interval of 90.4 ± 5.4 ms. Total retinal thickness was 229.5 ± 1.7 μm (mean ± SEM) in the area centralis region. The thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (mean ± SEM) using a circular peripapillary retinal scan centered on the optic nerve was 46.7 ± 0.9 μm (temporal), 46.1 ± 0.9 μm (superior), 45.8 ± 0.9 μm (nasal), and 48.4 ± 1 μm (inferior). The baseline pupil diameter was 2.1 ± 0.05 mm in darkness, and 1.1 ± 0.05 and 0.56 ± 0.03 mm after stimulation with red (630 nm, luminance 200 kcd/m2) or blue (480 nm, luminance 200 kcd/m2) light illumination, respectively. Conclusions  Pattern electroretinography, cPLR and SD-OCT analysis are reproducible techniques, which can provide important information about retinal and optic nerve function and structure in mice

    A novel mechanism for the anti-cancer activity of aspirin and salicylates

The published version can be accessed at the following link on the publisher’s website: https://doi.org/10.3892/ijo.2019.4701Epidemiological studies indicate that long-term aspirin usage reduces the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) and may protect against other non-CRC associated adenocarcinomas, including oesophageal cancer. A number of hypotheses have been proposed with respect to the molecular action of aspirin and other non‑steroidal anti‑inflammatory drugs in cancer development. The mechanism by which aspirin exhibits toxicity to CRC has been previously investigated by synthesising novel analogues and derivatives of aspirin in an effort to identify functionally significant moieties. Herein, an early effect of aspirin and aspirin-like analogues against the SW480 CRC cell line was investigated, with a particular focus on critical molecules in the epidermal growth factor (EGF) pathway. The present authors proposed that aspirin, diaspirin and analogues, and diflunisal (a salicylic acid derivative) may rapidly perturb EGF and EGF receptor (EGFR) internalisation. Upon longer incubations, the diaspirins and thioaspirins may inhibit EGFR phosphorylation at Tyr1045 and Tyr1173. It was additionally demonstrated, using a qualitative approach, that EGF internalisation in the SW480 cell line may be directed to endosomes by fumaryldiaspirin using early endosome antigen 1 as an early endosomal marker and that EGF internalisation may also be perturbed in oesophageal cell lines, suggestive of an effect not only restricted to CRC cells. Taken together and in light of our previous findings that the aspirin-like analogues can affect cyclin D1 expression and nuclear factor-κB localisation, it was hypothesized that aspirin and aspirin analogues significantly and swiftly perturb the EGFR axis and that the protective activity of aspirin may in part be explained by perturbed EGFR internalisation and activation. These findings may also have implications in understanding the inhibitory effect of aspirin and salicylates on wound healing, given the critical role of EGF in the response to tissue trauma

    The phosphate transporters LjPT4 and MtPT4 mediate early root responses to phosphate status in non mycorrhizal roots

    Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis improves host plant phosphorous (P) status and elicits the expression of AM-inducible phosphate transporters (PTs) in arbuscule-containing cells, where they control arbuscule morphogenesis and P release. We confirmed such functions for LjPT4 in mycorrhizal Lotus japonicus. Promoter-GUS experiments showed LjPT4 transcription not only in arbusculated cells but also in root tips, in the absence of the fungus: here LjPT4 transcription profile depended on the phosphate level. In addition, quantitative RT-PCR confirmed the expression of Lotus and Medicago truncatula PT4 in the tips of non-mycorrhizal roots. Starting from these observations, we hypothesized that AM-inducible PTs may have a regulatory role in plant development, irrespective of the fungal presence. Firstly, we focused on root development responses to different phosphate treatments in both plants demonstrating that phosphate starvation induced a higher number of lateral roots. By contrast, Lotus PT4i plants and Medicago mtpt4 mutants did not show any differential response to phosphate levels, suggesting that PT4 genes affect early root branching. Phosphate starvation-induced genes and a key auxin receptor, MtTIR1, showed an impaired expression in mtpt4 plants. We suggest PT4 genes as novel components of the P-sensing machinery at the root tip level, independently of AM fungi
