The beneficial usage of water treatment sludge as pottery product

    Get PDF
The disposal of sludge from water treatment operations has become a major problem in Malaysia. The problem becomes acute because of scarcity of space for installation of sludge treatment facilities and disposal of treated sludge. Traditionally, treated sludge from water treatment plant will be sent to landfill for disposal. This method does not benefit anybody besides creating other problems. Instead of considering it as a waste, sludge must be considered as a quality by-product that can be changed into beneficial product for consumer. As a pilot study, this research only emphasize on characterization of water treatment sludge and its behaviour when mixed with clay. Mineralogical compositions were determined using XRD, XRF for chemical composition and physical testing including Atterberg limit test and particles size distribution. Identification of beneficial usage is based on the characteristics of water treatment sludge. Keywords: chemical composition; mineral composition; physical characteristics; pottery product; water sludge

A novel green antenna phase-shift system with data acquisition boards

    Get PDF
A novel green phase shifter system is proposed in this research. The system is developed by a combination of reconfigurable beam steering antennas and data acquisition (DAQ) boards. A combination of two reconfigurable beam steering antennas, located side-by-side, forms a spatial configuration structure with a fabricated ‘green’ element plank of rice husk placed in between. The concept of a spatial configuration technique has been ‘mutated’ by shifting the structure of spiral feed line and aperture slots of first beam steering antenna by as much as 45 ◦ . The PIN diode switches connected to the DAQ boards enable the intelligent capability of the spatial antennas. The activation of certain degree radiation patterns of either the first beam steering antenna or the second beam steering antenna depends on the memory of the DAQ boards — Beam Manager. When an intruder comes from the cardinal angles of 0◦/ 360◦, 90◦, 180◦, or 270◦, its range and angles’ location will be automatically detected by the first antenna through the output ports of the 1st DAQ: P1.0, P1.1, P1.2, and P1.3. The second antenna is then activated by the output ports of the 2nd DAQ: P2.0 up to P2.3, to adaptively maneuver the beam towards four different ordinal directions of 45◦, 135◦, 225◦, and 315◦

Analysis of Pressure Effects for Current Density and Electric Field Performance of Gas Insulations

    Get PDF
Gas insulation had been used widely in high voltage industry as a dielectric component. According to the arrangement of gas particles that far apart from each other, lead to the movement of gas particles react fast with high temperature and pressure. Hence when breakdown occurred in a system, it will quickly protect the system by diminished the sparks to avoid flashover occurred. The intention of this research is to determine relationship between current density and electric field of gas insulations that have been used in the insulator. HV experimental test has been conducted, to obtain breakdown voltage of air to use as applied voltage in the simulation for breakdown purpose of three insulation gasses, which are Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6), Octafluoropropane (C3F8), and Nitrogen (N2). Physical properties such as thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and temperature of each gasses are require to identify value of current density and electric field of each insulation gasses. Furthermore, two pressure spots were placed symmetrically between two electrodes in the insulator. Based on simulation’s results, C3F8 is the best gas insulation because in normal condition and when presence of pressures it had lowest current density compared to SF6 and N2. Thus, C3F8 had the highest value of electric field among the insulation gasses. Electrical insulator is an internal electrical charger that cannot move freely and its contrast with semiconductors and conductors that can conduct electrical current easily. When the insulating material was used to avoid electrical discharges, it’s called insulation. High voltage insulation has been used widely in industry at electrical equipment such as switchgear and circuit breaker. The importance of applied high voltage in the electrical equipment is to prevent it from damage when faulty or breakdown occurs. From the results that have been obtained, the best gas insulation can be applied in the insulator as a protective component in electrical industry

AC breakdown behavior of SF6/N2 gas mixtures under non-uniform field electrode configurations

    Get PDF
Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas owns remarkable properties as insulation medium and current interrupter, which make it being widely used in gas-insulated equipment up to now. However, SF6 gas has a drawback that gives adverse effect to the environment since it is a strong greenhouse gas. As the effort to minimize the SF6 usage, this study was conducted to investigate the AC breakdown behavior of SF6/N2 gas mixtures with 10/90 ratio at low pressure levels (i.e. 0.11 MPa to 0.15 MPa) under non uniform field (i.e. R0.5-plane and R6-plane electrodes configurations). The results of the study indicate that the breakdown voltage of SF6/N2 gas mixtures in non-uniform field increases linearly with the increase of gas pressure and electrodes gap distance. As a function of gap distance, a higher increasing rate of breakdown voltage values were achieved at lowest pressure of 0.11 MPa compared to other pressure levels. In addition, it is also found that a higher breakdown voltage values was obtained under R6-plane configuration. But, the difference in breakdown voltage values between R0.5-plane and R6-plane configuration is less significant as the gap distance is increased. It is also observed that the field efficiency factor of R6-plane is higher than R0.5-plane which indicates a more uniform field exists between the electrodes

A study of frequency and pulses for stepper motor controller system by using programmable logic controller

    Get PDF
The stepper motor movement process produced different frequency and pulses. This research explained about the frequency and pulses for the stepper motor movement by using Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) as research method. The study was done to find the suitable frequency and pulses for stepper motor movement by developing a prototype stepper motor controller system. The pulse frequency used did not affected the distance of moving load in the stepper motor operations. The increasing number of pulse frequency only will affect the time taken for the stepper motor to complete its operations. The result showed that number of pulse frequency at high operation was 5000 Hz. Pulse number reacted as a manipulated variable that affected both factor which is time taken of stepper motor operation and the distance of moving load

The effects of pressure dependent constitutive model to simulate concrete structures failure under impact loads

    Get PDF
The main objective of this paper is to explore the effect of confining pressure in the compression and tension zone by simulating the behaviour of reinforced concrete/mortar structures subjected to the impact load. The analysis comprises the numerical simulation of the influences of high mass low speed impact weight dropping on concrete structures, where the analyses are incorporated with meshless method namely as Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The derivation of the plastic stiffness matrix of Drucker-Prager (DP) that extended from Von-Mises (VM) yield criteria to simulate the concrete behaviour were presented in this paper. In which, the displacements for concrete/mortar structures are assumed to be infinitesimal. Furthermore, the influence of the different material model of DP and VM that used numerically for concrete and mortar structures are also discussed. Validation upon existing experimental test results is carried out to investigate the effect of confining pressure, it is found that VM criterion causes unreal impact failure (flexural cracking) of concrete structures
