Control of the wetting properties of an AISI 316L stainless steel surface by femtosecond laser-induced surface modification
A simple and effective method without vacuum to control the wetting properties of AISI 316L stainless steel using femtosecond laser pulses at high repetition rate has been developed. Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces were formed by creating micro-conical structures on the surface with femtosecond laser irradiation in air. The scan speed was found to be an effective parameter in controlling micro-cone morphology, size and number densities and contact angles during surface wettability experiments. It was found during surface wettability experiments that the contact angle of water varied from 0¬∞ (superhydrophilic) to 113¬∞ on laser micro-cone textured surfaces depending on processing conditions. Additionally, a superhydrophobic AISI 316L stainless steel surface was created (contact angle ‚à º150¬∞) with a functionalized silane coating on already hydrophobic surface geometry.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/98609/1/0960-1317_22_10_105019.pd
Acacia saligna as a supplementary feed for grazing desert sheep and goats
Acacia saligna, a leguminous tree, has a high crude protein content, remains green all year and can be grown in deserts using only runoff water. However, dry matter intake (DMI) by sheep and goats of A. saligna is low, presumably due to its high tannin content. It has been suggested that DMI could be increased by such methods as wilting of the forage and by neutralizing the negative effects of tannins by tannin-complexing agents. The purpose of this study was to determine DMI of supplementary A. saligna (phyllodes and small stems) by grazing sheep (∼ 50 kg) and goats (∼ 37 kg) when the animals were (1) offered wilted or fresh material (Expt 1); and (2) administered with polyethylene glycol (PEG), a tannin-binding agent (Expt 2). In this second experiment, there were three 14-day periods in which one group each of sheep and goats was on a regime of: No PEG–PEG–No PEG, whereas another group was on a regime of: No PEG–No PEG–PEG. In Expt 1, the DMI of A. saligna was statistically higher in goats than in sheep, but there was no difference in intake between fresh and wilted material. Average DMI of A. saligna, both fresh and wilted, was 124·1 g/day or 8·41 g/kg0·75 per day for goats and 94·1 g/day or 5·05 g/kg0·75 per day for sheep. Goats and sheep consuming fresh A. saligna gained more body mass than their respective controls; the difference was significantly greater in goats but not in sheep. In Expt 2, DMI of fresh A. saligna in the first period (before PEG) was 104·1 g/day or 7·16 g/kg0·75 per day for goats and 84·8 g/day or 4·51 g/kg0·75 per day for sheep. Administration of PEG during the second period resulted in an increase in DMI of 62% in goats and 83% in sheep. These animals maintained a high A. saligna intake in the third period when PEG was withdrawn. Goats and sheep that did not receive PEG in the second period had similar A. saligna intake as in the first period, but increased intake by 62% and 47%, respectively, with PEG in the third period. Overall, the two goat groups and two sheep groups consuming A. saligna lost less body mass than their respective controls; the difference was significantly less in sheep but not in goats. It was concluded that wilting A. saligna did not increase DMI. Administration of PEG increased A. saligna intake and the intake remained high after PEG was withdrawn. Offering A. saligna as a supplement had a positive effect on body mass change
Quantum Hall induced currents and the magnetoresistance of a quantum point contact
We report an investigation of quantum Hall induced currents by simultaneous
measurements of their magnetic moment and their effect on the conductance of a
quantum point contact (QPC). Features in the magnetic moment and QPC resistance
are correlated at Landau-level filling factors nu=1, 2 and 4, which
demonstrates the common origin of the effects. Temperature and non-linear sweep
rate dependences are observed to be similar for the two effects. Furthermore,
features in the noise of the induced currents, caused by breakdown of the
quantum Hall effect, are observed to have clear correlations between the two
measurements. In contrast, there is a distinct difference in the way that the
induced currents decay with time when the sweeping field halts at integer
filling factor. We attribute this difference to the fact that, while both
effects are sensitive to the magnitude of the induced current, the QPC
resistance is also sensitive to the proximity of the current to the QPC
split-gate. Although it is clearly demonstrated that induced currents affect
the electrostatics of a QPC, the reverse effect, the QPC influencing the
induced current, was not observed
Reversible Metal-Semiconductor Transition of ssDNA-Decorated Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
A field effect transistor (FET) measurement of a SWNT shows a transition from
a metallic one to a p-type semiconductor after helical wrapping of DNA. Water
is found to be critical to activate this metal-semiconductor transition in the
SWNT-ssDNA hybrid. Raman spectroscopy confirms the same change in electrical
behavior. According to our ab initio calculations, a band gap can open up in a
metallic SWNT with wrapped ssDNA in the presence of water molecules due to

The eyes of the deep diving hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) enhance sensitivity to ultraviolet light
The mammalian visual range is approximately 400-700nm, although recent evidence suggests varying ultraviolet (UV) extensions in diverse terrestrial species. UV sensitivity may have advantages in the dim, blue light shifted environment experienced by submerged marine mammals. It may also be advantageous when seals are hauled out as UV is reflected by snow and ice but absorbed by fur, enhancing visual contrast. Here we show that the pelagic hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) has a highly UV permissive cornea and lens. Seals like other carnivores have a tapetum lucidum (TL) reflecting light back through the retina increasing sensitivity. The TL in this seal is unusual being white and covering almost the entire retina unlike that in other carnivores. Spectral reflectance from its surface selectively increases the relative UV/blue components >10 times than other wavelengths. Retinal architecture is consistent with a high degree of convergence. Enhanced UV from a large TL surface with a high degree of retinal convergence will increase sensitivity at a cost to acuity. UV electrophysiological retina responses were only obtained to dim, rod mediated stimuli, with no evidence of cone input. As physiological measurements of threshold sensitivity are log units higher than those for psychophysical detection, these seals are likely to be more UV sensitive than our results imply. Hence, UV reflections from the TL will afford increased sensitivity in dim oceanic environments
Detection of Excercise-Induced Ischemia by Measurement of NT-proBNP
Electrocardiographic exercise testing is the most widely used non-invasive screening test for coronary artery disease (CAD); however, both positive and negative predictive values for this procedure are hampered by relatively low sensitivity and specificity, leading to significant numbers of false negative and false positive studies. We hypothesized that NT-proBNP, a Neuro hormone secreted by cardiac myocytes in the ventricular wall in response to increased wall stress, would rise as a result of exercise-induced ischemia. If this were true, the enhancement of exercise testing by analysis of this plasma biomarker may offer significant improvement in the diagnostic accuracy of this procedure
Development and Process Evaluation of a 5-Week Exercise Program to Prevent Falls in People after Stroke: The FALLS Program
Falls are a common complication after stroke, with balance and gait deficits being the most important risk factors. Taking into account the specific needs and capacities of people with stroke, we developed the FALLS program (FALL prevention after Stroke), based on the “Nijmegen falls prevention program” (a proven-effective 5-week exercise program designed for community-dwelling elderly people). The program was tested in twelve community-dwelling persons with stroke, and a process evaluation was conducted with patients, trainers, health care professionals, and managers. The FALLS program was considered suitable and feasible by people with stroke in the study and relevant health care professionals, and recommendations for implementation in clinical practice have been suggested
Smooth HI Low Column Density Outskirts In Nearby Galaxies

The Version of Record is available online at https://doi.org/10.3847/1538-3881/aabbaa.The low column density gas at the outskirts of galaxies as traced by the 21 cm hydrogen line emission (H i) represents the interface between galaxies and the intergalactic medium, i.e., where galaxies are believed to get their supply of gas to fuel future episodes of star formation. Photoionization models predict a break in the radial profiles of H i at a column density of ∼5 × 10 19 cm -2 due to the lack of self-shielding against extragalactic ionizing photons. To investigate the prevalence of such breaks in galactic disks and to characterize what determines the potential edge of the H i disks, we study the azimuthally averaged H i column density profiles of 17 nearby galaxies from the H i Nearby Galaxy Survey and supplemented in two cases with published Hydrogen Accretion in LOcal GAlaxieS data. To detect potential faint H i emission that would otherwise be undetected using conventional moment map analysis, we line up individual profiles to the same reference velocity and average them azimuthally to derive stacked radial profiles. To do so, we use model velocity fields created from a simple extrapolation of the rotation curves to align the profiles in velocity at radii beyond the extent probed with the sensitivity of traditional integrated H i maps. With this method, we improve our sensitivity to outer-disk H i emission by up to an order of magnitude. Except for a few disturbed galaxies, none show evidence of a sudden change in the slope of the H i radial profiles: the alleged signature of ionization by the extragalactic background.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
