Metateoría del sistema normativo.

Las ciencias contemporáneas están constituidas por todos ordena- dos de proposiciones teóricas; dicho brevemente: son sistemas teóricos. Su estructura ha alcanzado la perfección en los sistemas de la lógica y de las matemáticas; esos sistemas la revelan del modo más evidente y es la razón por la cual han sido los más estudiados desde este punto de vista.

Acerca de la semántica del lenguaje del derecho.

De las diversas concepciones de la semiótica, me quiero referir aquí sólo a la que tiene sus raíces en John Locke, se empezó a conocer con Ch. S. Pierce, fue más tarde precisada por G.W.Morris y alcanzó la perfección con sus sucesores, entre los que se encuentran principalmente R. Carnap y R. Montague1. Las investigaciones semióticas a las cuales ésta concepción sirve de base, han experimentado en nuestra época una tan grande divulgación e importancia, que la elaboración de una semiótica jurídica -para referirnos exclusivamente al campo del derecho-ha sido considerada imprescindible tanto por motivos prácticos como teóricos; por motivos prácticos, debido a los servicios que esta disciplina debe prestar, por ejemplo a la informática del derecho; y teóricos, para ampliar la comprensión del derecho a través de la investigación semiótica de su lenguaje. Esta tarea es tan extensa como complicada, ya que para poder llevarla a cabo correctamente, se tendría que completar la semiótica del derecho a través del lenguaje de los juristas. Pero vamos a plantear aquí sólo tres interrogantes, de los cuales uno reviste carácter general, y los otros dos se refieren exclusivamente a la semántica jurídica; la sintaxis y la pragmática del derecho las dejaremos totalmente de lado.Abordaremos ahora sólo los siguientes asuntos: ¿Qué carácter reviste el lenguaje jurídico (es prescriptivo o descriptivo)? ¿Es necesario distinguir entre designación y significado? ¿Se considera según las normas como verdadera o falsa

Density-matrix renormalisation group approach to quantum impurity problems

A dynamic density-matrix renormalisation group approach to the spectral properties of quantum impurity problems is presented. The method is demonstrated on the spectral density of the flat-band symmetric single-impurity Anderson model. We show that this approach provides the impurity spectral density for all frequencies and coupling strengths. In particular, Hubbard satellites at high energy can be obtained with a good resolution. The main difficulties are the necessary discretisation of the host band hybridised with the impurity and the resolution of sharp spectral features such as the Abrikosov-Suhl resonance.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics: Condensed Matte

The genome landscape of indigenous African cattle

Background: The history of African indigenous cattle and their adaptation to environmental and human selection pressure is at the root of their remarkable diversity. Characterization of this diversity is an essential step towards understanding the genomic basis of productivity and adaptation to survival under African farming systems. Results: We analyze patterns of African cattle genetic variation by sequencing 48 genomes from five indigenous populations and comparing them to the genomes of 53 commercial taurine breeds. We find the highest genetic diversity among African zebu and sanga cattle. Our search for genomic regions under selection reveals signatures of selection for environmental adaptive traits. In particular, we identify signatures of selection including genes and/ or pathways controlling anemia and feeding behavior in the trypanotolerant N’Dama, coat color and horn development in Ankole, and heat tolerance and tick resistance across African cattle especially in zebu breeds. Conclusions: Our findings unravel at the genome-wide level, the unique adaptive diversity of African cattle while emphasizing the opportunities for sustainable improvement of livestock productivity on the continent

Exact solution of the Falicov-Kimball model with dynamical mean-field theory

The Falicov-Kimball model was introduced in 1969 as a statistical model for metal-insulator transitions; it includes itinerant and localized electrons that mutually interact with a local Coulomb interaction and is the simplest model of electron correlations. It can be solved exactly with dynamical mean-field theory in the limit of large spatial dimensions which provides an interesting benchmark for the physics of locally correlated systems. In this review, we develop the formalism for solving the Falicov-Kimball model from a path-integral perspective, and provide a number of expressions for single and two-particle properties. We examine many important theoretical results that show the absence of fermi-liquid features and provide a detailed description of the static and dynamic correlation functions and of transport properties. The parameter space is rich and one finds a variety of many-body features like metal-insulator transitions, classical valence fluctuating transitions, metamagnetic transitions, charge density wave order-disorder transitions, and phase separation. At the same time, a number of experimental systems have been discovered that show anomalies related to Falicov-Kimball physics [including YbInCu4, EuNi2(Si[1-x]Gex)2, NiI2 and TaxN].Comment: 51 pages, 40 figures, submitted to Reviews of Modern Physic
