    Evaluation of the Gonial Angle in the Anatolian Populations: From Past to Present

    Biometrical studies on ancient skeletal series and comparison with modern people by using radiological methods are quite limited in Turkey. Previous studies showed that measurements obtained from orthopantomographs are highly correlated with the actual size of the bones. The aim of the present study is to determine the possible change in gonial angle over time in ancient Anatolian populations with the present. Also an aim was attempted to demonstrate the symmetry of the gonial angle in the jaws and the sexual dimorphism. Gonial angle values (right and left) were taken from 267 Turkish adults with no craniomandibular disorders, orthodontic history or treatment by using panoramic radiographs. Data of the past populations were collected from previous studies. Comparison between right and left sides and the sexual differences were tested by paired student t-test and discriminant analyses were conducted. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the right and left gonial angles of the individuals but there was a significant difference at the left gonial angle between sexes (p<0.01). Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was found for the gonial angle between the selected past populations with the present sample

    Nonisocyanate based polyurethane/silica nanocomposites and their coating performance

    A series of silica nano-particles with different size were prepared by sol–gel technique, then surface modification by using cyclic carbonate functional organoalkoxysilane (CPS) was performed. Various amounts of carbonated silica particles directly added into carbonated soybean oil (CSBO) and carbonated polypropylene glycol (CPPG) resin mixture to prepare polyurethane–silica nanocomposite coating compositions by nonisocyanate route using an aliphatic diamine as a curing agent. Cupping, gloss, impact, and taber abrasion tests were performed on aluminum panels coated with those nano-composite formulations and tensile tests, thermogravimetric and SEM analyses were conducted on the free films prepared from the same coating formulations. An increase in abrasion resistance of CSBO-CPPG resin combination with the addition of silica was observed. In addition, the maximum weight loss of CSBO-CPPG resin combination was shifted to higher temperatures with incorporation of silica nano-particles The positive effect of modified silica particles on thermal stability of CSBO-CPPG system could be explained in such a way that PPG chains are able to disperse particles in the medium throughout the interactions between ether linkages and silanol groups

    Localization of Mental and Mandibular Foramens on the Conventional and Digital Panoramic Images

    The purpose of this study was to compare the efficiency of conventional and digital panoramic images for localization of mental and mandibular foramens. Six dry edentulous human mandibles were used in the study. Conventional and digital panoramic images were obtained and the vertical and horizontal measurements were performed for localization of mental and mandibular foramens on the images. The correlations between radiographic (conventional and digital) and direct measurements were compared. A measurement error between the radiographic and direct measurements was determined at the level of 1 mm. The measurement errors were generally less in conventional panoramic radiography than digital one. There was statistically strong positive correlation between direct and radiographic measurements. Statistically significant difference was found between radiographic and direct measurements for bone height of mandible in ramus region. According to the results of this study, diagnostic performance of conventional and digital panoramic images seems to be equal for the localization of mental and mandibular foramens. The vertical radiographic measurements are generally reliable and correlated with direct measurements in mandible for conventional and digital panoramic radiography, but the evaluation of bone height in ramus region may not be sufficiently reliable

    A Radiographic Study of Location of Mental Foramen in a Selected Turkish Population On Panoramic Radiograph

    Purpose of this study was to investigate the most common position of the mental foramen in a selected Turkish population. The study sample included three hundred and sixty one panoramic radiographs of selected Turkish population taken in Faculty of Dentistry, University of Gazi. The most common position of the mental foramen was between the first premolar and the second premolar (71.5%). The mental foramen was symmetrical in 90.4% of patients. In this study, the difference of the location of the mental foramen in different ethnics groups was discussed. Clinicians and anthropologists should expect to find the position of the mental foramen to be symmetrical and between the first premolar and the second premolar teeth

    Impaired toll like receptor-7 and 9 induced immune activation in chronic spinal cord injured patients contributes to immune dysfunction

    Reduced immune activation or immunosuppression is seen in patients withneurological diseases. Urinary and respiratory infections mainly manifested as septicemia and pneumonia are the most frequent complications following spinal cord injuries and they account for the majority of deaths. The underlying reason of these losses is believed to arise due to impaired immune responses to pathogens. Here, we hypothesized that susceptibility to infections of chronic spinal cord injured (SCI) patients might be due to impairment in recognition of pathogen associated molecular patterns and subsequently declining innate and adaptive immune responses that lead to immune dysfunction. We tested our hypothesis on healthy and chronic SCI patients with a level of injury above T-6. Donor PBMCs were isolated and stimulated with different toll like receptor ligands and T-cell inducers aiming to investigate whether chronic SCI patients display differential immune activation to multiple innate and adaptive immune cell stimulants. We demonstrate that SCI patients' B-cell and plasmacytoid dendritic cells retain their functionality in response to TLR7 and TLR9 ligand stimulation as they secreted similar levels of IL6 and IFNα. The immune dysfunction is not probably due to impaired T-cell function, since neither CD4+ T-cell dependent IFNγ producing cell number nor IL10 producing regulatory T-cells resulted different outcomes in response to PMA-Ionomycin and PHA-LPS stimulation, respectively. We showed that TLR7 dependent IFNγ and IP10 levels and TLR9 mediated APC function reduced substantially in SCI patients compared to healthy subjects. More importantly, IP10 producing monocytes were significantly fewer compared to healthy subjects in response to TLR7 and TLR9 stimulation of SCI PBMCs. When taken together this work implicated that these defects could contribute to persistent complications due to increased susceptibility to infections of chronic SCI patients. © 2017 Gucluler et al.     Structural models for large software systems

    Today, software is found in almost all systems, vehicles, communication devices, medical equipments, and entertainment, for example. The size and complexity of these systems has grown continuously over the last forty years--- the time span for modern competing.The latest release of the Windows operating system, called Vista, is expected to he more than fifty million lines of code, about 4% bigger than the previous version. Some of the reasons for this are numerous feature demands and the neck to support multiple platforms, and need for compatibility with legacy software and hardware. Each line of code, in these large systems, requires perhaps several technical decisions, often, but not simple. The sheer volume of this decision making process is daunting. No single human can fully understand a system of high complexity. To help ameliorate this problem, systems are decomposed into subsystems, libraries,modules, and classes. Most of these components have interdependencies, in order to provide services, one to another. However, in systems of great size, the dependencies often become a dense web of relationships.It is exactly this problem on which we focus in this research. We propose that static dependency structure is an important element to understand the state of large software system. We conduct various analyses using well-known existing open source, commercial and expert developed projects, including our own projects to evaluate the overall effectiveness of our approaches. We detect structural problems in large software development projects, and present a structure metric to rank software tiles according to their risk contribution to the software system.Additionally, we present a model that indexes software components according to their potential for reuse. We design and conduct experiment to investigate the impact of change in one file on other files. Furthermore, we provide tools needed to support analysis, project visualization and monitoring. Finally, the investigate corrective procedures and simulate their application, monitoring improvements in observed defects

    Potential enhancement and targeting strategies of polymeric and lipid-based nanocarriers in dermal drug delivery

    Nanocarriers used for alternative drug-delivery strategies have gained interest due to improved penetration and delivery of drugs into specific regions of the skin in recent years. Dermal drug delivery via polymeric-based nanocarriers (polymeric nanoparticles, micelles, dendrimers) and lipid-based nanocarriers (solid-lipid nanoparticles and nanostructured lipid carriers, vesicular nanocarriers including liposomes, niosomes, transfersomes and ethosomes) has been widely investigated. Although penetration of nanocarriers through the intact skin could be restricted, these carriers are particularly considered as feasible for the treatment of dermatological diseases in which the skin barrier is disrupted and also for follicular delivery of drugs for management of skin disorders such as acne. This review mainly highlights the recent approaches on potential penetration enhancement and targeting mechanisms of these nanocarriers

    The aim of this study was to assess the distribution of sagittal occlusal relationships in different dentition periods in a Turkish sample group. In total, 1,110 patients (561 females, 549 males) aged 4.6-23 years were randomly chosen after intraoral clinical examination. The subjects were classified according to their sagittal occlusal relationships and four dentition stages -deciduous, early mixed, late mixed, and permanent dentition. The statistical significance of the occurrence of malocclusion types in dentition stages was evaluated by Chi-square and Fischer's exact tests. Class I malocclusion was observed at the highest rate in all dentition stages. Class III malocclusion was observed at the highest rate in the permanent dentition, whereas Class II malocclusion was observed at the highest rate in the late mixed dentition. The rates of Class I, II, and III malocclusions were similar in males and females. Our study reveals that the prevalence of malocclusion and need for orthodontic treatment has increased in the population towards the permanent dentition
