Configuration development study of the X-24C hypersonic research airplane
Bottom line results were made of a three-phase study to determine the feasibility of designing, building, and operating, and maintaining an air-launched high performance aircraft capable of cruising at speeds up to Mach 8 for short durations. The results show that Lockalloy heat-sink structure affords the capability for a 'work-horse' vehicle which can serve as an excellent platform for this research. It was further concluded that the performance of a blended wing body configuration surpassed that of a lifting body design for typical X-24C missions. The cost of a two vehicle program, less engines, B-52 modification and contractor support after delivery, can be kept within $70M (in Jan. 1976 dollars)
Hot electron driven enhancement of spin-lattice coupling in 4f ferromagnets observed by femtosecond x-ray magnetic circular dichroism
Femtosecond x-ray magnetic circular dichroism was used to study the
time-dependent magnetic moment of 4 fs electrons in the ferromagnets Gd and Tb,
which are known for their different spin-lattice coupling. We observe a
two-step demagnetization with an ultrafast demagnetization time of 750 fs
identical for both systems and slower times which differ sizeably with 40 ps
for Gd and 8 ps for Tb. We conclude that spin-lattice coupling in the
electronically excited state is enhanced up to orders of magnitude compared to

Distribution Of Foraging Shearwaters Relative To Inner Front Of SE Bering Sea
We examined the hypothesis that short-tailed shearwaters Puffinus tenuirostris aggregate to forage at the inner front of the SE Bering Sea because of enhanced production there. We tested this hypothesis by comparing primary production, the distribution of euphausiids and the distribution of shearwaters relative to the front during late spring and late summer/early fall of 1997, 1998 and 1999. We found enhanced primary production at the front and offshore of the front during summer but not during spring. Primary production varied between seasons and years. Major differences were related to anomalous conditions in 1997 and 1998. The density of euphausiids was higher at the front and offshore of the front during summer, but there were no differences among regions during spring. Foraging shearwaters aggregated in high densities at the front during summer, but foraged close to shore during spring. At the front, shearwaters foraged on euphausiids Thysanoessa raschii and T. inermis as expected, and on copepods that accumulated in the area. The proportion of zooplankton consumed at the front decreased from summer 1997 to summer 1999, while consumption of sandlance Ammodytes hexapterus at this feature increased. Our results show that, during summer, the inner front supports aggregations of euphausiids and their seabird predators. The means by which the frontal system supports enhanced production and the subsequent trophic transfers is dependent on the availability of nutrients at depth in the frontal region and the aggregation of small zooplankton organisms in this feature
On-site correlation in valence and core states of ferromagnetic nickel
We present a method which allows to include narrow-band correlation effects
into the description of both valence and core states and we apply it to the
prototypical case of nickel. The results of an ab-initio band calculation are
used as input mean-field eigenstates for the calculation of self-energy
corrections and spectral functions according to a three-body scattering
solution of a multi-orbital Hubbard hamiltonian. The calculated quasi-particle
spectra show a remarkable agreement with photoemission data in terms of band
width, exchange splitting, satellite energy position of valence states, spin
polarization of both the main line and the satellite of the 3p core level.Comment: 14 pages, 10 PostScript figures, RevTeX, submitted to PR
On the electronic structure of electron doped LaOFeAs as seen by X-ray absorption spectroscopy
We investigated the recently found superconductor LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs by X-ray
absorption spectroscopy (XAS). From a comparison of the O K-edge with LDA
calculations we find good agreement and are able to explain the structure and
changes of the spectra with electron doping. An important result from this edge
is a limitation of the Hubbard U to values not significantly larger than 1 eV.
From experimental Fe L_2,3-edge spectra and charge transfer multiplet
calculations we gain further information on important physical values such as
hopping parameters, the charge transfer energy Delta, and the on-site Hubbard
U. Furthermore we find the system to be very covalent with a large amount of
ligand holes. A shift in the chemical potential is visible in the O K- and Fe
L_2,3-edge spectra which emphasizes the importance of band effects in these

Matrilineal behavioral and physiological changes following the death of a non-alpha matriarch in rhesus macaque
In many species, the loss of alpha matriarchs is associated with a number of negative outcomes such as troop fission, eviction, wounding, and reduced vitality. However, whether
the dramatic consequences of their loss are due to their role as an old experienced figure or
to their alpha status remains unclear. In a retrospective study, we tested that in a semi-free
ranging colony of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), the removal of a non-alpha matriarch, who had a large set of kin, led to changes in behavior and physiological stress within
her matriline. Following her removal, her matriline increased in aggression, vigilance, and
social grooming. Additionally, hierarchical stability, measured by levels of rank changes,
decreased within her matriline, and levels of intense aggression by high-ranking animals
were more frequent, as well as matrilineal wounding. Although ordinal rank was positively
associated with higher chronic hair cortisol concentrations (HCCs) in the months before the
matriarch’s removal, following her removal, only those who experienced large increases in
rank within her matriline displayed higher HCCs. Changes in matrilineal stability, aggression, behavior, and HCCs within the other two matrilines in the troop were not evident,
although caution is needed due to the small sample sizes. We conclude that the removal of
the non-alpha matriarch led to matrilineal instability, characterized by higher levels of
aggression and subsequent vigilance, rank changes, physiological stress, and grooming.
We suggest that non-alpha matriarchs with a large number of kin and social support can be

Methodology of calculation of construction and hydrodynamic parameters of a foam layer apparatus for mass-transfer processes
Промислова реалізація методу стабілізації газорідинного шару дозволяє значно розширити галузь застосування пінних апаратів і відкриває нові можливості інтенсифікації технологічних процесів з одночасним створенням маловідходних технологій. У статті встановлені основні параметри, що впливають на гідродинаміку пінних апаратів, розглянуті основні конструкції та режими роботи пінних апаратів. Виявлено зв'язок гідродинамічних параметрів. Розглянуто гідродинамічні закономірності пінного шару. Вказані фактори, що впливають на процес масообміну, як в газовій, так і в рідкій фазах. Проведений аналіз ряду досліджень показав, що перспективним напрямком інтенсифікації процесу масообміну є розробка апаратів з трифазним псевдозрідженим шаром зрошуваної насадки складних форм із сітчастих матеріалів. Отже, необхідне проведення спеціальних досліджень гідродинамічних режимів роботи апарату з сітчастою насадкою і визначенням параметрів, що впливають на швидкість переходу насадки з одного режиму в інший.Industrial implementation of the stabilization method of the gas-liquid layer can significantly expand the field of use of foaming apparatus and opens up new opportunities for intensifying technological processes with the simultaneous creation of low-waste technologies. The article establishes the basic parameters influencing the hydrodynamics of foam apparatus, considers the basic constructions and operating modes of foam apparatus. The connection of hydrodynamic parameters is revealed. The hydrodynamic laws of the foam layer are considered. The indicated factors affecting the process of mass transfer, both in the gas and in the liquid phases. The conducted analysis of a number of studies showed that the perspective direction of intensification of the mass transfer process is the development of apparatuses with a three-phase fluidized bed of an irrigated nozzle of complex forms with mesh materials
Testing the inverse-Compton catastrophe scenario in the intra-day variable blazar S5 0716+71. I. Simultaneous broadband observations during November 2003
Some intra-day variable, compact extra-galactic radio sources show brightness
temperatures severely exceeding 10^{12} K, the limit set by catastrophic
inverse-Compton (IC) cooling in sources of incoherent synchrotron radiation.
The violation of the IC limit, possible under non-stationary conditions, would
lead to IC avalanches in the soft-gamma-ray energy band during transient
periods. For the first time, broadband signatures of possible IC catastrophes
were searched for in S5 0716+71. A multifrequency observing campaign targetting
S5 0716+71 was carried out in November 2003 under the framework of the European
Network for the Investigation of Galactic nuclei through Multifrequency
Analysis (ENIGMA) together with a campaign by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope
(WEBT), involving a pointing by the soft-gamma-ray satellite INTEGRAL, optical,
near-infrared, sub-millimeter, millimeter, radio, and Very Long Baseline Array
(VLBA) monitoring. S5 0716+71 was very bright at radio frequencies and in a
rather faint optical state during the INTEGRAL pointing; significant inter-day
and low intra-day variability was recorded in the radio regime, while typical
fast variability features were observed in the optical band. No correlation was
found between the radio and optical emission. The source was not detected by
INTEGRAL, neither by the X-ray monitor JEM-X nor by the gamma-ray imager ISGRI,
but upper limits to the source emission in the 3-200 keV energy band were
estimated. A brightness temperature Tb>2.1x10^{14} K was inferred from the
radio variability, but no corresponding signatures of IC avalanches were
recorded at higher energies. The absence of IC-catastrophe signatures provides
either a lower limit delta>8 to the Doppler factor affecting the radio emission
or strong constraints for modelling of the Compton catastrophes in S5 0716+71.Comment: 15 pages, 3 EPS figures, 3 tables, to appear in A&
Systematic review with meta-analysis of the epidemiological evidence relating smoking to COPD, chronic bronchitis and emphysema
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Smoking is a known cause of the outcomes COPD, chronic bronchitis (CB) and emphysema, but no previous systematic review exists. We summarize evidence for various smoking indices.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Based on MEDLINE searches and other sources we obtained papers published to 2006 describing epidemiological studies relating incidence or prevalence of these outcomes to smoking. Studies in children or adolescents, or in populations at high respiratory disease risk or with co-existing diseases were excluded. Study-specific data were extracted on design, exposures and outcomes considered, and confounder adjustment. For each outcome RRs/ORs and 95% CIs were extracted for ever, current and ex smoking and various dose response indices, and meta-analyses and meta-regressions conducted to determine how relationships were modified by various study and RR characteristics.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 218 studies identified, 133 provide data for COPD, 101 for CB and 28 for emphysema. RR estimates are markedly heterogeneous. Based on random-effects meta-analyses of most-adjusted RR/ORs, estimates are elevated for ever smoking (COPD 2.89, CI 2.63-3.17, n = 129 RRs; CB 2.69, 2.50-2.90, n = 114; emphysema 4.51, 3.38-6.02, n = 28), current smoking (COPD 3.51, 3.08-3.99; CB 3.41, 3.13-3.72; emphysema 4.87, 2.83-8.41) and ex smoking (COPD 2.35, 2.11-2.63; CB 1.63, 1.50-1.78; emphysema 3.52, 2.51-4.94). For COPD, RRs are higher for males, for studies conducted in North America, for cigarette smoking rather than any product smoking, and where the unexposed base is never smoking any product, and are markedly lower when asthma is included in the COPD definition. Variations by sex, continent, smoking product and unexposed group are in the same direction for CB, but less clearly demonstrated. For all outcomes RRs are higher when based on mortality, and for COPD are markedly lower when based on lung function. For all outcomes, risk increases with amount smoked and pack-years. Limited data show risk decreases with increasing starting age for COPD and CB and with increasing quitting duration for COPD. No clear relationship is seen with duration of smoking.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results confirm and quantify the causal relationships with smoking.</p
