    The equation of state of nuclear matter suggests that at suitable beam energies the disassembling hot system formed in heavy ion collisions will pass through a liquid-gas coexistence region. Searching for the signatures of the phase transition has been a very important focal point of experimental endeavours in heavy ion collisions, in the last fifteen years. Simultaneously theoretical models have been developed to provide information about the equation of state and reaction mechanisms consistent with the experimental observables.     Observation of the Spin-Seebeck Effect in a Ferromagnetic Semiconductor

    The spin-Seebeck effect was recently discovered in a metallic ferromagnet and consists of a thermally generated spin distribution that is electrically measured utilizing the inverse spin Hall effect. Here this effect is reproduced experimentally in a ferromagnetic semiconductor, GaMnAs, which allows for flexible design of the magnetization directions, a larger spin polarization, and measurements across the magnetic phase transition. The spin-Seebeck effect in GaMnAs is observed even in the absence of longitudinal charge transport. The spatial distribution of spin-currents is maintained across electrical breaks highlighting the local nature of the effect, which is therefore ascribed to a thermally induced spin redistribution.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, plus supporting information 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

    Concurrent system programming with effect handlers

Algebraic effects and their handlers have been steadily gaining attention as a programming language feature for composably expressing user-defined computational effects. While several prototype implementations of languages incorporating algebraic effects exist, Multicore OCaml incorporates effect handlers as the primary means of expressing concurrency in the language. In this paper, we make the observation that effect handlers can elegantly express particularly difficult programs that combine system programming and concurrency without compromising performance. Our experimental results on a highly concurrent and scalable web server demonstrate that effect handlers perform on par with highly optimised monadic concurrency libraries, while retaining the simplicity of direct-style code

    Maladaptive behaviors are linked with inefficient sleep in individuals with developmental disabilities

    The purpose of the current study was to assess the relations between nightly sleep patterns and the frequency of daily maladaptive behavior. Antecedent and consequential relations between sleep patterns and behavior were evaluated with time series analysis. Sleep efficiency and maladaptive behavior were determined for 20 female residents of an institutional care facility for adults with developmental disabilities. Daily maladaptive behavioral data and nightly sleep/awake logs were collected for 4Β months for each participant. Efficient sleep patterns were significantly associated with lower frequencies of maladaptive behaviors. All lagged cross-correlations 8Β days before and 8Β days after an evening of sleep were significant. These findings suggested that inefficient sleep was associated with increased maladaptive behaviors and that the lagged associations reflected a chronic but not an acute linkage between sleep and behavior

    Search for time-dependent B0s - B0s-bar oscillations using a vertex charge dipole technique

    We report a search for B0s - B0s-bar oscillations using a sample of 400,000 hadronic Z0 decays collected by the SLD experiment. The analysis takes advantage of the electron beam polarization as well as information from the hemisphere opposite that of the reconstructed B decay to tag the B production flavor. The excellent resolution provided by the pixel CCD vertex detector is exploited to cleanly reconstruct both B and cascade D decay vertices, and tag the B decay flavor from the charge difference between them. We exclude the following values of the B0s - B0s-bar oscillation frequency: Delta m_s < 4.9 ps-1 and 7.9 < Delta m_s < 10.3 ps-1 at the 95% confidence level.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, replaced by version accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D; results differ slightly from first versio

    Effects of Coleus Forskohlii Supplementation on Body Composition and Hematological Profiles in Mildly Overweight Women

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Purpose</p> <p>This study investigated the effects of <it>Coleus Forskohlii </it>(CF) on body composition, and determined the safety and efficacy of supplementation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In a double blind and randomized manner, 23 females supplemented their diet with ForsLeanβ„’ (250 mg of 10% CF extract, (n = 7) or a placebo [P] (n = 12) two times per day for 12-wks. Body composition (DEXA), body weight, and psychometric instruments were obtained at 0, 4, 8 & 12 weeks of supplementation. Fasting blood samples and dietary records (4-d) were obtained at 0 and 12-wks. Side effects were recorded on a weekly basis. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA and are presented as mean changes from baseline for the CF and placebo groups, respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No significant differences were observed in caloric or macronutrient intake. CF tended to mitigate gains in body mass (-0.7 Β± 1.8, 1.0 Β± 2.5 kg, p = 0.10) and scanned mass (-0.2 Β± 1.3, 1.7 Β± 2.9 kg, p = 0.08) with no significant differences in fat mass (-0.2 Β± 0.7, 1.1 Β± 2.3 kg, p = 0.16), fat free mass (-0.1 Β± 1.3, 0.6 Β± 1.2 kg, p = 0.21), or body fat (-0.2 Β± 1.0, 0.4 Β± 1.4%, p = 0.40). Subjects in the CF group tended to report less fatigue (p = 0.07), hunger (p = 0.02), and fullness (p = 0.04). No clinically significant interactions were seen in metabolic markers, blood lipids, muscle and liver enzymes, electrolytes, red cells, white cells, hormones (insulin, TSH, T3, and T4), heart rate, blood pressure, or weekly reports of side effects.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Results suggest that CF does not appear to promote weight loss but may help mitigate weight gain in overweight females with apparently no clinically significant side effects.</p

    Soft tissue damage after minimally invasive THA: A comparison of 5 approaches

    Methods 5 surgeons each performed a total hip arthroplasty on 5 fresh frozen cadaver hips, using either a MIS anterior, MIS anterolateral, MIS 2-incision, MIS posterior, or lateral transgluteal approach. Postoperatively, the hips were dissected and muscle damage color-stained. We measured proportional muscle damage relative to the midsubstance cross-sectional surface area (MCSA) using computerized color detection. The integrity of external rotator muscles, nerves, and ligaments was assessed by direct observation. Results None of the other MIS approaches resulted in less gluteus medius muscle damage than the lateral transgluteal approach. However, the MIS anterior approach completely preserved the gluteus medius muscle in 4 cases while partial damage occurred in 1 case. Furthermore, the superior gluteal nerve was transected in 4 cases after a MIS anterolateral approach and in 1 after the lateral transgluteal approach. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve was transected once after both the MIS anterior approach and the MIS 2-incision approach. Interpretation The MIS anterior approach may preserve the gluteus medius muscle during total hip arthroplasty, but with a risk of damaging the lateral femoral cutaneous nerv
