Electronic Theory for the Nonlinear Magneto-Optical Response of Transition-Metals at Surfaces and Interfaces: Dependence of the Kerr-Rotation on Polarization and on the Magnetic Easy Axis
We extend our previous study of the polarization dependence of the nonlinear
optical response to the case of magnetic surfaces and buried magnetic
interfaces. We calculate for the longitudinal and polar configuration the
nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr rotation angle. In particular, we show which
tensor elements of the susceptibilities are involved in the enhancement of the
Kerr rotation in nonlinear optics for different configurations and we
demonstrate by a detailed analysis how the direction of the magnetization and
thus the easy axis at surfaces and buried interfaces can be determined from the
polarization dependence of the nonlinear magneto-optical response, since the
nonlinear Kerr rotation is sensitive to the electromagnetic field components
instead of merely the intensities. We also prove from the microscopic treatment
of spin-orbit coupling that there is an intrinsic phase difference of
90 between tensor elements which are even or odd under magnetization
reversal in contrast to linear magneto-optics. Finally, we compare our results
with several experiments on Co/Cu films and on Co/Au and Fe/Cr multilayers. We
conclude that the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr-effect determines uniquely the
magnetic structure and in particular the magnetic easy axis in films and at
multilayer interfaces.Comment: 23 pages Revtex, preprintstyle, 2 uuencoded figure
Complementary substrate specificity and distinct quaternary assembly of the Escherichia coli aerobic and anaerobic beta-oxidation trifunctional enzyme complexes
The trifunctional enzyme (TFE) catalyzes the last three steps of the fatty acid beta-oxidation cycle. Two TFEs are present in Escherichia coli, EcTFE and anEcTFE. EcTFE is expressed only under aerobic conditions, whereas anEcTFE is expressed also under anaerobic conditions, with nitrate or fumarate as the ultimate electron acceptor. The anEcTFE subunits have higher sequence identity with the human mitochondrial TFE (HsTFE) than with the soluble EcTFE. Like HsTFE, here it is found that anEcTFE is a membrane-bound complex. Systematic enzyme kinetic studies show that anEcTFE has a preference for medium- and long-chain enoyl-CoAs, similar to HsTFE, whereas EcTFE prefers short chain enoyl-CoA substrates. The biophysical characterization of anEcTFE and EcTFE shows that EcTFE is heterotetrameric, whereas anEcTFE is purified as a complex of two heterotetrameric units, like HsTFE. The tetrameric assembly of anEcTFE resembles the HsTFE tetramer, although the arrangement of the two anEcTFE tetramers in the octamer is different from the HsTFE octamer. These studies demonstrate that EcTFE and anEcTFE have complementary substrate specificities, allowing for complete degradation of long-chain enoyl-CoAs under aerobic conditions. The new data agree with the notion that anEcTFE and HsTFE are evolutionary closely related, whereas EcTFE belongs to a separate subfamily.Peer reviewe
Theory for Spin-Polarized Oscillations in Nonlinear Magneto-Optics due to Quantum Well States
Using an electronic tight-binding theory we calculate the nonlinear
magneto-optical response from an x-Cu/1Fe/Cu(001) film as a function of
frequency and Cu overlayer thickness (x=3 ... 25). We find very strong
spin-polarized quantum well oscillations in the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr
effect (NOLIMOKE). These are enhanced by the large density of Fe states
close to the Fermi level acting as intermediate states for frequency doubling.
In good agreement with experiment we find two oscillation periods of 6-7 and 11
monolayers the latter being more pronounced.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, 3 postscript figure
The transfer of protein crystals from their original mother liquor to a solution with a completely different precipitant
A procedure is described for the transfer of protein crystals from an ammonium sulfate‐containing mother liquor to a solution with another precipitant, such as polyethylene glycol. The suitable concentration of the alternative precipitant is established via a novel protocol, using a hanging‐drop equilibration method. This crystal transfer procedure is illustrated by experiments with crystals of trypanosomal triosephosphate isomerase and bacterial p ‐hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase, but it might have more general applicability
Femtosecond control of electric currents at the interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures
The idea to utilize not only the charge but also the spin of electrons in the
operation of electronic devices has led to the development of spintronics,
causing a revolution in how information is stored and processed. A novel
advancement would be to develop ultrafast spintronics using femtosecond laser
pulses. Employing terahertz (10 Hz) emission spectroscopy, we
demonstrate optical generation of spin-polarized electric currents at the
interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures at the femtosecond
timescale. The direction of the photocurrent is controlled by the helicity of
the circularly polarized light. These results open up new opportunities for
realizing spintronics in the unprecedented terahertz regime and provide new
insights in all-optical control of magnetism.Comment: 3 figures and 2 tables in the main tex
Density-functional study of hydrogen chemisorption on vicinal Si(001) surfaces
Relaxed atomic geometries and chemisorption energies have been calculated for
the dissociative adsorption of molecular hydrogen on vicinal Si(001) surfaces.
We employ density-functional theory, together with a pseudopotential for Si,
and apply the generalized gradient approximation by Perdew and Wang to the
exchange-correlation functional. We find the double-atomic-height rebonded D_B
step, which is known to be stable on the clean surface, to remain stable on
partially hydrogen-covered surfaces. The H atoms preferentially bind to the Si
atoms at the rebonded step edge, with a chemisorption energy difference with
respect to the terrace sites of >sim 0.1 eV. A surface with rebonded single
atomic height S_A and S_B steps gives very similar results. The interaction
between H-Si-Si-H mono-hydride units is shown to be unimportant for the
calculation of the step-edge hydrogen-occupation. Our results confirm the
interpretation and results of the recent H_2 adsorption experiments on vicinal
Si surfaces by Raschke and Hoefer described in the preceding paper.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B. Other related

Nonlinear Magneto-Optics of Fe Monolayers from first principles: Structural dependence and spin-orbit coupling strength
We calculate the nonlinear magneto-optical response of free-standing fcc
(001), (110) and (111) oriented Fe monolayers. The bandstructures are
determined from first principles using a full-potential LAPW method with the
additional implementation of spin-orbit coupling. The variation of the
spin-orbit coupling strength and the nonlinear magneto-optical spectra upon
layer orientation are investigated. We find characteristic differences which
indicate an enhanced sensitivity of nonlinear magneto-optics to surface
orientation and variation of the in-plane lattice constants. In particular the
crossover from onedimensional stripe structures to twodimensional films of
(111) layers exhibits a clean signature in the nonlinear Kerr-spectra and
demonstrates the versatility of nonlinear magneto-optics as a tool for in situ
thin-film analysis.Comment: 28 pages, RevTeX, psfig, submitted to PR
Dietary Docosahexaenoic Acid Prevents Silica-Induced Development of Pulmonary Ectopic Germinal Centers and Glomerulonephritis in the Lupus-Prone NZBWF1 Mouse
Ectopic lymphoid structures (ELS) consist of B-cell and T-cell aggregates that are initiated de novo in inflamed tissues outside of secondary lymphoid organs. When organized within follicular dendritic cell (FDC) networks, ELS contain functional germinal centers that can yield autoantibody-secreting plasma cells and promote autoimmune disease. Intranasal instillation of lupus-prone mice with crystalline silica (cSiO2), a respirable particle linked to human lupus, triggers ELS formation in the lung, systemic autoantibodies, and early onset of glomerulonephritis. Here we tested the hypothesis that consumption of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid with anti-inflammatory properties, influences the temporal profile of cSiO2-induced pulmonary ectopic germinal center formation and development of glomerulonephritis. Female NZBWF1 mice (6-wk old) were fed purified isocaloric diets supplemented with 0, 4, or 10 g/kg DHA - calorically equivalent to 0, 2, or 5 g DHA per day consumption by humans, respectively. Beginning at age 8 wk, mice were intranasally instilled with 1 mg cSiO2, or saline vehicle alone, once per wk, for 4 wk. Cohorts were sacrificed 1, 5, 9, or 13 wk post-instillation (PI) of the last cSiO2 dose, and lung and kidney lesions were investigated by histopathology. Tissue fatty acid analyses confirmed uniform dose-dependent DHA incorporation across all cohorts. As early as 1 wk PI, inflammation comprising of B (CD45R+) and T (CD3+) cell accumulation was observed in lungs of cSiO2-treated mice compared to vehicle controls; these responses intensified over time. Marked follicular dendritic cell (FDC; CD21+/CD35+) networking appeared at 9 and 13 wk PI. IgG+ plasma cells suggestive of mature germinal centers were evident at 13 wk. DHA supplementation dramatically suppressed cSiO2-triggered B-cell, T-cell, FDC, and IgG+ plasma cell appearance in the lungs as well as anti-dsDNA IgG in bronchial lavage fluid and plasma over the course of the experiment. cSiO2 induced glomerulonephritis with concomitant B-cell accumulation in the renal cortex at 13 wk PI but this response was abrogated by DHA feeding. Taken together, realistic dietary DHA supplementation prevented initiation and/or progression of ectopic lymphoid neogenesis, germinal center development, systemic autoantibody elevation, and resultant glomerulonephritis in this unique preclinical model of environment-triggered lupus
