On the partial connection between random matrices and interacting particle systems
In the last decade there has been increasing interest in the fields of random
matrices, interacting particle systems, stochastic growth models, and the
connections between these areas. For instance, several objects appearing in the
limit of large matrices arise also in the long time limit for interacting
particles and growth models. Examples of these are the famous Tracy-Widom
distribution functions and the Airy_2 process. The link is however sometimes
fragile. For example, the connection between the eigenvalues in the Gaussian
Orthogonal Ensembles (GOE) and growth on a flat substrate is restricted to
one-point distribution, and the connection breaks down if we consider the joint
distributions. In this paper we first discuss known relations between random
matrices and the asymmetric exclusion process (and a 2+1 dimensional
extension). Then, we show that the correlation functions of the eigenvalues of
the matrix minors for beta=2 Dyson's Brownian motion have, when restricted to
increasing times and decreasing matrix dimensions, the same correlation kernel
as in the 2+1 dimensional interacting particle system under diffusion scaling
limit. Finally, we analyze the analogous question for a diffusion on (complex)

Frequency of neurolopsychological deficits after traumatic brain injury
El traumatismo craneoencefálico (TCE) puede conllevar impactantes cambios en la vida cotidiana, que incluyen alteraciones a nivel social, profesional, comunicativo y cognitivo (dificultades atencionales, mnemónicas y ejecutivas). Este estudio tuvo por objeto caracterizar la ocurrencia de déficits neuropsicológicos post-TCE y constatar el impacto ocasionado por el nivel de severidad del trauma en el desempeño cognitivo de los pacientes. Participaron 96 adultos en la muestra total, que fue dividida en dos grupos para evaluar el nivel de severidad del trauma: TCE leve (n=39) y TCE grave (n=77). La gravedad de la lesión se clasificó por medio de la Escala de Coma de Glasgow, por la duración de la pérdida de consciencia, o por la amnesia post-traumática. No había diferencias entre la edad y la escolaridad de los participantes. Para la comparación entre los grupos en cuanto a la distribución de ocurrencia de déficits neuropsicológicos, se utilizó el Chi-cuadrado. Se utilizó una batería de evaluación neuropsicológica flexible conformada por tareas verbales y visoespaciales de habilidades lingüísticas, mnemónicas y ejecutivas. Los grupos no se diferenciaron en cuanto a las variables sociodemográficas. Los pacientes con TCE leve tuvieron mejores puntajes comparados con los de TCE grave (número de errores y categorías completadas del Test de clasificación de tarjetas de Wisconsin- [WCST, por sus siglas en inglés]; errores en la parte B del Test de Hayling; y en la interferencia retro y proactiva del Test de aprendizaje auditivo verbal de Rey [RAVLT, por sus siglas en inglés]. El nivel de severidad del trauma parece mostrar diferencias en los individuos en cuanto al desempeño en memoria episódica de información nueva y en el control de interferencia entre los recuerdos; lo mismo se aplica a las funciones de flexibilidad e inhibición. This study aimed to characterize the occurrence of post-TBI neuropsychological deficits as well as to determine whether there is an impact related to the level of severity of the trauma on the patient's performance. Ninety-six adults participated in the study, who were divided in two groups to assess the trauma's level of severity: mild TBI (n=39) and severe TBI (n=57). This severity was classified by the Glasgow Coma Scale, by the duration of consciousness loss, or by post-traumatic amnesia. There were no differences between the groups regarding variables of age and years of schooling. A Chi- square test was used to do a comparison between the two groups in terms of occurrence of neuropsychological deficits. Verbal, visuospatial, mnemonic, linguistic and executive tests composed a flexible neuropsychological battery. Patients with mild TBI had better scores compared to those with severe TBI (number of errors and in completed categories of the Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (MWCST); errors in Part B of The Hayling Test; and proactive and retroactive interference in the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT). The severity of the trauma seems to differentiate individual's performance on episodic memory of new information and in the control of interference between memories; the same is applied to flexibility and inhibition functions. These results suggest the need for more investments in public health policy actions, prioritizing neurocognitive remedial intervention and prevention methods for such condition with high incidence of sequelae
Level spacings at the metal-insulator transition in the Anderson Hamiltonians and multifractal random matrix ensembles
We consider orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic ensembles of random matrices
with (1/a)(ln x)^2 potentials, which obey spectral statistics different from
the Wigner-Dyson and are argued to have multifractal eigenstates. If the
coefficient is small, spectral correlations in the bulk are universally
governed by a translationally invariant, one-parameter generalization of the
sine kernel. We provide analytic expressions for the level spacing distribution
functions of this kernel, which are hybrids of the Wigner-Dyson and Poisson
distributions. By tuning the single parameter, our results can be excellently
fitted to the numerical data for three symmetry classes of the
three-dimensional Anderson Hamiltonians at the metal-insulator transition,

Supremum of the Airy2 process minus a parabola on a half line
Let \aip(t) be the Airy process. We show that the random variable
[\sup_{t\leq\alpha}\{aip(t)-t^2}+\min{0,\alpha}^2] has the same distribution as
the one-point marginal of the Airy process at time . These
marginals form a family of distributions crossing over from the GUE Tracy-Widom
distribution for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of random
matrices, to a rescaled version of the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. Furthermore, we show that
for every the distribution has the same right tail decay

In vivo characterization of connective tissue remodeling using infrared photoacoustic spectra
Premature cervical remodeling is a critical precursor of spontaneous preterm birth, and the remodeling process is characterized by an increase in tissue hydration. Nevertheless, current clinical measurements of cervical remodeling are subjective and detect only late events, such as cervical effacement and dilation. Here, we present a photoacoustic endoscope that can quantify tissue hydration by measuring near-infrared cervical spectra. We quantify the water contents of tissue-mimicking hydrogel phantoms as an analog of cervical connective tissue. Applying this method to pregnant women in vivo, we observed an increase in the water content of the cervix throughout pregnancy. The application of this technique in maternal healthcare may advance our understanding of cervical remodeling and provide a sensitive method for predicting preterm birth

The Spectroscopic Orbit of the Evolved Binary HD 197770
We have used spectra taken between 1992 and 1997 to derive the spectroscopic
orbit of the eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binary HD 197770. This binary
has a period of 99.69 +/- 0.02 days and K amplitudes of 31.2 +/- 0.8 and 47.1
+/- 0.4 km s^{-1} for components A & B, respectively. The msin^{3}i values for
A & B are 2.9 and 1.9, respectively, and are close to the actual masses due to
the eclipsing nature of this binary. Both components of HD 197770 have spectral
types near B2 III. This means both components are undermassive by about a
factor of five and, thus, evolved stars. Additional evidence of the evolved
nature of HD 197770 is found in 25, 60, and 100 micron IRAS images of HD
197770. These images show 2 apparent shells centered on HD 197770; a bright 60
micron shell with a 14' diameter and a larger (1.2 degeree diameter)
bubble-like feature. At least one of the components of HD 197770 is likely to

The Spitzer Survey of Interstellar Clouds in the Gould Belt. III. A Multi-Wavelength View of Corona Australis
We present Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC and MIPS observations of a 0.85 deg^2
field including the Corona Australis (CrA) star-forming region. At a distance
of 130 pc, CrA is one of the closest regions known to be actively forming
stars, particularly within its embedded association, the Coronet. Using the
Spitzer data, we identify 51 young stellar objects (YSOs) in CrA which include
sources in the well-studied Coronet cluster as well as distributed throughout
the molecular cloud. Twelve of the YSOs discussed are new candidates, one of
which is located in the Coronet. Known YSOs retrieved from the literature are
also added to the list, and a total of 116 candidate YSOs in CrA are compiled.
Based on these YSO candidates, the star formation rate is computed to be 12 M_o
Myr^-1, similar to that of the Lupus clouds. A clustering analysis was also
performed, finding that the main cluster core, consisting of 68 members, is
elongated (having an aspect ratio of 2.36), with a circular radius of 0.59 pc
and mean surface density of 150 pc^-2.
In addition, we analyze outflows and jets in CrA by means of new CO and H_2
data. We present 1.3 mm interferometric continuum observations made with the
Submillimeter Array (SMA) covering R CrA, IRS 5, IRS 7, and IRAS 18595-3712
(IRAS 32). We also present multi-epoch H_2 maps and detect jets and outflows,
study their proper motions, and identify exciting sources. The Spitzer and
ISAAC/VLT observations of IRAS 32 show a bipolar precessing jet, which drives a
CO (2-1) outflow detected in the SMA observations. There is also clear evidence
for a parsec-scale precessing outflow, E-W oriented, and originating in the SMA
2 region, likely driven by SMA 2 or IRS 7A.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. 112 pages, 42 figures (quality

Patient-reported outcome instruments for assessing Raynaud’s phenomenon in systemic sclerosis:A SCTC vascular working group report
The episodic nature of Raynaud’s phenomenon in systemic sclerosis has led to a reliance on patient-reported outcome instruments such as the Raynaud’s Condition Score diary. Little is known about the utilization in routine clinical practice and health professional attitudes toward existing patient-reported outcome instruments for assessing systemic sclerosis- Raynaud’s phenomenon. Members of the Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium Vascular Working Group (n = 28) were invited to participate in a survey gauging attitudes toward the Raynaud’s Condition Score diary and the perceived need for novel patient-reported outcome instruments for assessing patient-reported outcome. Nineteen Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium Vascular Working Group members (68% response rate) from academic units based in North America (n = 9), Europe (n = 8), South America (n = 1) and Australasia (n = 1) took part in the survey. There was broad consensus that Raynaud’s Condition Score diary returns could be influenced by factors including seasonal variation in weather, efforts made by patients to avoid or ameliorate attacks of Raynaud’s phenomenon, habituation to Raynaud’s phenomenon symptoms, evolution of Raynaud’s phenomenon symptom characteristics with progressive obliterative microangiopathy, patient-coping strategies, respondent burden and placebo effect. There was consensus that limitations of the Raynaud’s Condition Score diary might be a barrier to drug development (79% of respondents agree/strongly agree) and that a novel patient-reported outcome instrument for assessing systemic sclerosis-Raynaud’s phenomenon should be developed with the input of both clinicians and patients (84% agree/strongly agree). Perceived potential limitations of the Raynaud’s Condition Score diary have been identified along with concerns that such factors might impede drug development programs for systemic sclerosis-Raynaud’s phenomenon. There is support within the systemic sclerosis community for the development of a novel patient-reported outcome instrument for assessing systemic sclerosis-Raynaud’s phenomenon.</p
