Unitarity of the tree approximation to the Glauber AA amplitude for large A
The nucleus-nucleus Glauber amplitude in the tree approximation is studied
for heavy participant nuclei. It is shown that, contrary to previous published
results, it is not unitary for realistic values of nucleon-nucleon
cross-sections.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, 1 table. Submitted to Yad. Fi
No classical limit of quantum decay for broad states
Though the classical treatment of spontaneous decay leads to an exponential
decay law, it is well known that this is an approximation of the quantum
mechanical result which is a non-exponential at very small and large times for
narrow states. The non exponential nature at large times is however hard to
establish from experiments. A method to recover the time evolution of unstable
states from a parametrization of the amplitude fitted to data is presented. We
apply the method to a realistic example of a very broad state, the sigma meson
and reveal that an exponential decay is not a valid approximation at any time
for this state. This example derived from experiment, shows the unique nature
of broad resonances
Kernel estimates for nonautonomous Kolmogorov equations with potential term
Using time dependent Lyapunov functions, we prove pointwise upper bounds for
the heat kernels of some nonautonomous Kolmogorov operators with possibly
unbounded drift and diffusion coefficients and a possibly unbounded potential
term
Identification of antischistosomal leads by evaluating peroxides of beta-dicarbonyl compounds and their heteroanalogs : bridged 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes and alphaperoxides, and beta,delta-triketones: tricyclic monoperoxides
Although antischistosomal properties of peroxides were studied in recent years, systematic structure-activity relationships have not been conducted. We evaluated the antischistosomal potential of 64 peroxides belonging to bridged 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes, alphaperoxides and beta,delta-triketones. Thirty-nine compounds presented IC50 values > 15 microM on newly transformed schistosomula. Active drugs featured phenyl-, adamantane- or alkyl residues at the methylene bridge. Lower susceptibility was documented on adult schistosomes, with most hit compounds being tricyclic monoperoxides (IC50: 7.7-13.4 microM). A bridged 1,2,4,5-tetraoxane characterized by an adamantane residue showed the highest activity (IC50: 0.3 microM) on adult Schistosoma mansoni. Studies with hemin and heme supplemented medium indicated that antischistosomal activation of peroxides is not necessarily triggered by iron porphyrins. Two compounds (tricyclic monoperoxide; bridged 1,2,4,5-tetraoxane) revealed high worm burden reductions in the chronic (WBR: 75.4-82.8 %) but only moderate activity in the juvenile (WBR:18.9-43.1%) S. mansoni mouse model. Our results might serve as starting point for the preparation and evaluation of related derivative
Electron energy relaxation under terahertz excitation in (Cd1−xZnx)3As2 Dirac semimetals
We demonstrate that measurements of the photo-electromagnetic effect using terahertz laser radiation provide an argument for the existence of highly conductive surface electron states with a spin texture in Dirac semimetals (Cd₁-xZnx)₃As
Hidden evidence of non-exponential nuclear decay
The framework to describe natural phenomena at their basics being quantum
mechanics, there exist a large number of common global phenomena occurring in
different branches of natural sciences. One such global phenomenon is
spontaneous quantum decay. However, its long time behaviour is experimentally
poorly known. Here we show, that by combining two genuine quantum mechanical
results, it is possible to infer on this large time behaviour, directly from
data. Specifically, we find evidence for non-exponential behaviour of alpha
decay of 8Be at large times from experiments.Comment: 12 pages LaTex, 3 figure
Complex Scaled Spectrum Completeness for Coupled Channels
The Complex Scaling Method (CSM) provides scattering wave functions which
regularize resonances and suggest a resolution of the identity in terms of such
resonances, completed by the bound states and a smoothed continuum. But, in the
case of inelastic scattering with many channels, the existence of such a
resolution under complex scaling is still debated. Taking advantage of results
obtained earlier for the two channel case, this paper proposes a representation
in which the convergence of a resolution of the identity can be more easily
tested. The representation is valid for any finite number of coupled channels
for inelastic scattering without rearrangement.Comment: Latex file, 13 pages, 4 eps-figure
Diffusion in multiscale spacetimes
We study diffusion processes in anomalous spacetimes regarded as models of
quantum geometry. Several types of diffusion equation and their solutions are
presented and the associated stochastic processes are identified. These results
are partly based on the literature in probability and percolation theory but
their physical interpretation here is different since they apply to quantum
spacetime itself. The case of multiscale (in particular, multifractal)
spacetimes is then considered through a number of examples and the most general
spectral-dimension profile of multifractional spaces is constructed.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures. v2: discussion improved, typos corrected,

Operation of a 1-Liter-Volume Gaseous Argon Scintillation Counter
We have built a gas-phase argon ionization detector to measure small nuclear
recoil energies (< 10 keVee). In this paper, we describe the detector response
to X-ray and gamma calibration sources, including analysis of pulse shapes,
software triggers, optimization of gas content, and energy- and
position-dependence of the signal. We compare our experimental results against
simulation using a 5.9-keV X-ray source, as well as higher-energy gamma sources
up to 1332 keV. We conclude with a description of the detector, DAQ, and
software settings optimized for a measurement of the low-energy nuclear
quenching factor in gaseous argon. This work was performed under the auspices

Vibrations and fractional vibrations of rods, plates and Fresnel pseudo-processes
Different initial and boundary value problems for the equation of vibrations
of rods (also called Fresnel equation) are solved by exploiting the connection
with Brownian motion and the heat equation. The analysis of the fractional
version (of order ) of the Fresnel equation is also performed and, in
detail, some specific cases, like , 1/3, 2/3, are analyzed. By means
of the fundamental solution of the Fresnel equation, a pseudo-process ,
with real sign-varying density is constructed and some of its properties
examined. The equation of vibrations of plates is considered and the case of
circular vibrating disks is investigated by applying the methods of
planar orthogonally reflecting Brownian motion within . The composition of
F with reflecting Brownian motion yields the law of biquadratic heat
equation while the composition of with the first passage time of
produces a genuine probability law strictly connected with the Cauchy process.Comment: 33 pages,8 figure
