    A Computational Account of Borderline Personality Disorder: Impaired Predictive Learning about Self and Others Through Bodily Simulation

    Social dysfunction is a prominent and disabling aspect of borderline personality disorder. We reconsider traditional explanations for this problem, especially early disruption in the way an infant feels physical care from its mother, in terms of recent developments in computational psychiatry. In particular, social learning may depend on reinforcement learning though embodied simulations. Such modeling involves calculations based on structures outside the brain such as face and hands, calculations on one\u27s own body that are used to make inferences about others. We discuss ways to test the role of embodied simulation in BPD and potential implications for treatment

    Contemplating Mindfulness at Work: An Integrative Review

    Mindfulness research activity is surging within organizational science. Emerging evidence across multiple fields suggests that mindfulness is fundamentally connected to many aspects of workplace functioning, but this knowledge base has not been systematically integrated to date. This review coalesces the burgeoning body of mindfulness scholarship into a framework to guide mainstream management research investigating a broad range of constructs. The framework identifies how mindfulness influences attention, with downstream effects on functional domains of cognition, emotion, behavior, and physiology. Ultimately, these domains impact key workplace outcomes, including performance, relationships, and well-being. Consideration of the evidence on mindfulness at work stimulates important questions and challenges key assumptions within management science, generating an agenda for future research

    Cascading the use of Web 2.0 technology in secondary schools in the United Kingdom: identifying the barriers beyond pre-service training

    This paper reports on research that took place at Nottingham Trent University and Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom, over two years. The research focuses on the use of Web 2.0 technology, specifically web logs, with pre-service teachers, both during their university programme and the first year of teaching as full-time newly qualified teachers (NQTs). The purpose of this research was to add a developing body of knowledge by identifying whether technology used by pre-service teachers during their training course can be cascaded into their practice once qualified. Key findings identify a number of enablers and barriers to cascading technology in the classroom; these include curriculum time, pupil skills and support. The research concludes that early professional support and development should be on-going and assumptions about new teachers as champions of cascading innovative use of Web 2 technologies into their practice as NQTs may be over optimisti

    Restoration of tropical seagrass beds using wild bird fertilization and sediment regrading

    Shallow water seagrass meadows are frequently damaged by recreational and commercial vessels. Severe injury occurs where propeller scarring, hull groundings and mooring anchors uproot entire plants, excavate sediments, and modify the biophysical properties of the substrate. In climax tropical seagrass communities dominated by Thalassia testudinum (turtlegrass), natural recovery in these disturbances can take several years to decades, and in some environmental conditions may not occur at all. During the recovery period, important ecological services provided by seagrasses are absent or substantially diminished and injured meadows can degrade further in response to natural disturbances, e.g. strong currents and severe storms. To determine if we could accelerate rehabilitation and prevent further degradation of injured turtlegrass meadows, we evaluated a restoration method called “modified compressed succession” using the fast-growing, opportunistic species Halodule wrightii to temporarily substitute ecological services for the slower-growing, climax species T. testudinum. In three experiments we showed statistically significant increases in density and coverage rates of H. wrightii transplants fertilized by wild bird feces as compared to unfertilized treatments. In one experiment, we further demonstrated that regrading excavated injuries with sediment-filled biodegradable tubes in combination with wild bird fertilization and H. wrightii transplants also accelerated seagrass recovery. Specific recommendations are presented for the best practical application of this restoration method in the calcium carbonate-based sediments of south Florida and the wider Caribbean region

    Phase II trial of trimelamol in refractory ovarian cancer

    Trimelamol is an analogue of hexamethymelamine which exhibited activity against refractory ovarian cancer in phase I clinical trial. The dose limiting toxicity was leukopenia. In a phase II study, 42 patients with recurrent, or platinum-complex resistant, advanced ovarian cancer were treated using the dose schedule 800 mg m-2 i.v. daily for 3 days. There were one complete, three partial and five minor responses, objective response rate: 9.5%. The main toxicity observed was nausea and vomiting, myelosuppression was minor. The role of Trimelamol in the treatment of ovarian cancer remains to be defined, but its activity is limited in refractory disease

    Inmate Education as a Service Learning Opportunity for Students: Preparation, Benefits, and Lessons Learned

    There is mounting evidence that prison inmates benefit from educational opportunities but may not be offered to them. In addition, when they are offered, priority is given to prisoners who will be released in the near future, and those serving long-term or life sentences are less likely to have access to classes. A service learning opportunity was created where students taught a life span development class to women serving long-term sentences. This article provides a guide to setting up the class while avoiding obstacles along the way. It also outlines benefits to students, inmates, supervising faculty, and society. In order to teach, students must apply what they have learned, and the prison experience challenges them to consider their power and privilege

Since its inception in 1998, the project has furthered this goal through the development of individual remote laboratories, or iLabs, as well as a distributed software infrastructure designed to streamline the implementation and sharing of remote laboratories. iLabs are designed to complement traditional, hands-on laboratories by providing practical educational experiences where they would not otherwise be available. Such remote labs, developed and hosted by MIT and other institutions within the iLab Consortium, have been successfully used by instructors at schools across the educational spectrum and around the world. While certainly valuable, many of the original experiments available through the iLab platform provide a limited experience in that they are observational in nature. They only provide students the ability to study the behavior of a pre-defined system under test. Such labs have proven to be valuable additions to engineering curricula, but do not have the flexibility that is inherent in a traditional laboratory experience. To address this, the MIT iLab Project has begun focusing on the development of iLabs that provide students with the ability to design or troubleshoot experimental systems.
