First Measurement of the Ru(p,)Rh Cross Section for the p-Process with a Storage Ring
This work presents a direct measurement of the Ru()Rh cross section via a novel technique using a storage ring,
which opens opportunities for reaction measurements on unstable nuclei. A
proof-of-principle experiment was performed at the storage ring ESR at GSI in
Darmstadt, where circulating Ru ions interacted repeatedly with a
hydrogen target. The Ru()Rh cross section between 9
and 11 MeV has been determined using two independent normalization methods. As
key ingredients in Hauser-Feshbach calculations, the -ray strength
function as well as the level density model can be pinned down with the
measured () cross section. Furthermore, the proton optical potential
can be optimized after the uncertainties from the -ray strength
function and the level density have been removed. As a result, a constrained
Ru()Rh reaction rate over a wide temperature range is
recommended for -process network calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figs, Accepted for publication at PR
Measurements of proton-induced reactions on ruthenium-96 in the ESR at GSI
8th International Conference on Nuclear Physics at Storage Rings Stori11, October 9-14, 2011 Laboratori Nazionale di Frascati, Italy.
Storage rings offer the possibility of measuring proton- and alpha-induced reactions in inverse kinematics. The combination of this approachwith a radioactive beamfacility allows, in principle, the determination of the respective cross sections for radioactive isotopes. Such data are highly desired for a better understanding of astrophysical nucleosynthesis processes like the p-process. A pioneering experiment has been performed at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI using a stable 96Ru beam at 9-11 AMeV and a hydrogen target. Monte-Carlo simulations of the experiment were made using the Geant4 code. In these simulations, the experimental setup is described in detail and all reaction channels can be investigated. Based on the Geant4 simulations, a prediction of the shape of different spectral components can be performed. A comparison of simulated predictions with the experimental results shows a good agreement and allows the extraction of the cross section
Coulomb dissociation of N 20,21
Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role in the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on N20,21 are reported. Relativistic N20,21 ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the N19(n,γ)N20 and N20(n,γ)N21 excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The N19(n,γ)N20 rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at
Activity determination of 60Co and the importance of its beta spectrum
21st International Conference on Radionuclide Metrology and its Applications (ICRM), Argentinian Comis Nacl Energia Atomica, Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA, MAY 15-19, 2017. Organizer: Argentinian Comision Nacional Energia AtomicaInternational audienceThe activity concentration of a Co solution was measured by means of two 4- coincidence counting systems using a liquid scintillation counter and a proportional counter (PC) in the beta channel, respectively. Additional liquid scintillation measurements were carried out and CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing as well as the triple-to double coincidence ratio (TDCR) methods were applied to analyse the data. The last two methods require computed beta spectra to determine the counting efficiencies. The results of both 4- coincidence counting techniques are in very good agreement and yield a robust reference value. The initial activity concentration determined with liquid scintillation counting was found to be significantly lower than the results from 4- a coincidence counting. In addition, the results from TDCR and CIEMAT/NIST show some inconsistency. The discrepancies were resolved by applying new beta spectrum calculations for the dominant allowed beta transition of Co. The use of calculations which take screening effects as well as the atomic exchange effect into account leads to good agreement between all four methods; the combination of these techniques delivers an important validation of beta spectra
measurement at the GSI storage ring
A pioneering experiment was recently performed at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI. Fully stripped ions of 96Ru were injected into the storage ring and slowed down to a few MeV per nucleon. The 97Rh ions from the 96Ru(p,γ) reaction at a newly developed hydrogen jet target were detected with Double Sided Silicon Strip Detectors (DSSSD) mounted inside a pocket. The experiment and the status of the analysis at a beam energy of 11 MeV per nucleon will be presented. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd

Unveiling the two-proton halo character of 17Ne: Exclusive measurement of quasi-free proton-knockout reactions
The proton drip-line nucleus 17Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17Ne(p, 2p)16F∗ →15O+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16F into 15O (including γ decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l = 0 and l = 2 motion of the valence protons in 17Ne. With a resulting relatively small l = 0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections
Exclusive measurements of nuclear breakup reactions of 17Ne
We have studied one-proton-removal reactions of about 500MeV/u 17Ne beams on a carbon target at the R3B/LAND setup at GSI by detecting beam-like 15O-p and determining their relative-energy distribution. We exclusively selected the removal of a 17Ne halo proton, and the Glauber-model analysis of the 16F momentum distribution resulted in an s2 contribution in the 17Ne ground state of about 40%
Measurements of neutron cross sections for advanced nuclear energy systems at n_TOF (CERN)
The n_TOF facility operates at CERN with the aim of addressing the request of high accuracy nuclear data for advanced nuclear energy systems as well as for nuclear astrophysics. Thanks to the features of the neutron beam, important results have been obtained on neutron induced fission and capture cross sections of U, Pu and minor actinides. Recently the construction of another beam line has started; the new line will be complementary to the first one, allowing to further extend the experimental program foreseen for next measurement campaigns
