    Istraživanje je pokazalo da je urbanistička transformacija željezničkih koridora potrebna u onim gradovima u kojima željeznica ograničava Å”irenje ili integriranje dijelova grada, u gradovima u kojima se željeznički promet izmjeÅ”ta te u gradovima u kojima željeznica jest ili će postati javni gradski prometni sustav. Prostori s najvećim potencijalom transformacije jesu prostori s najviÅ”e postojećih problema, čijom će se transformacijom zadovoljiti najviÅ”e ciljeva transformacije, bilo da se radi o novoj izgradnji unutar prostora koridora ili o rekonstrukciji postojećih izgrađenih prostora. Za utvrđivanje ovih složenih suodnosa izrađuju se interaktivne matrice. Primarno se formiraju tri osnovne matrice korelacije povezanosti problema i rjeÅ”avanja ciljeva te potreban broj sekundarnih matrica. Praktična provjera modela istražuje se na primjeru grada Osijeka

Researching historical maps and other available data, a detailed genesis of squareā€™s functions and historical changes is presented. The article concludes with the evaluation of the present condition of Vatroslav Lisinski Square and its potentials for future reconstruction and regeneration

    Malvinski, odnosno Falklandski otoci (eng. Falkland Islands; Å”panj. Islas Malvinas), kako ih Britanci nazivaju su otočna skupina u južnom Atlantiku, oko 550 km od argentinske obale. Danas na njima živi oko 3000 stanovnika, dok ih je početkom 1980-ih bilo 1000 manje. Pitanje međunarodnopravnog statusa Falklandskog otočja nije se rijeÅ”ilo joÅ” od kolonijalnog doba, a danaÅ”nji položaj i status rezultat je britanskog nasilnog zauzimanja teritorija 1833. Razlog je izbijanje Falklandski rat između Argentine i Velike Britanije, trajao je od 2. travnja 1982. do 14.lipnja 1982. U njemu je život izgubilo 255 Britanaca, dok ih je 777 ranjeno. Broj poginulih Argentinaca je 655. Brojnijim naoružanjem britanska vojska je borbom uspjela pobijediti, te je ishod Falklandskog rata u Britaniji donio pobjedu Konzervativnoj stranci na parlamentarnim izborima 1983. Britanija je vratila Falklande pod svoje okrilje, a Argentina je iz sukoba izaÅ”la poražena, a vojska osramoćena. Vojni režim je odstupio sa vlasti te je započela demokratizacija sustava. Oružane snage Velike Britanije i Argentine su bile opremljene naoružanjem zapadne vojne tehnologije i uvježbane uglavnom za suprotstavljanje istočnoj tehnologiji i doktrini, stoga su se naÅ”le u situaciji za koju nisu bile pripremljene ni opremljene. Upravo zbog toga, mnogi Falklandski rat nazivaju ratom masovne primjene improvizacija

    This article focuses on the history of Osijekā€™s spatial and urban planning with respect to the position and treatment of the cityā€™s railway system. The study compared eight plans, dating from 1912 to the present day, and found that railway construction in and around the city was completed in 1910. During this period, three different planning approaches were developed for the cityā€™s railway system. The oldest planning approach, starting in 1912, was a passive, ā€œleave it as it isā€ approach, dealing cautiously with the network of newly constructed railway lines. The second, proactive approach, proposed dismantling or relocating railway lines from the city center while the third approach focused on the actual railway traffic in Osijek with respect to public use of vacant railway corridors. The results will help provide a scientific basis for future planning of railways and railway corridors in the urban area of Osijek.Rad predstavlja prikaz povijesti prostornog i urbanističkog planiranja grada Osijeka, s naglaskom na pozicioniranje i tretman željezničkog sustava. Istraživanjem je obuhvaćeno osam planova u razdoblju od 1912. godine do danas, uz napomenu da je glavnina željezničkog sustava oko i unutar Osijeka u potpunosti izgrađena do 1910. godine. Tijekom viÅ”e od stotinu godinu definirana su tri glavna pristupa planiranju razvoja grada i željeznice. Najstariji, pasivni pristup, željeznicu prihvaća kao prostornu datost dok aktivniji pristup u desetljećima poslije II svjetskog rata predlaže radikalna rjeÅ”enja izmjeÅ”tanja ili ukidanja pruga u srediÅ”tu grada. Recentniji planovi treće faze pokuÅ”avaju povezati trenutnu poziciju željeznice u gradu s mogućnostima transformacije prostora koje sustav koristi. Rezultati prikazanog istraživanja predstavljaju znanstveni temelj za planiranje obnove i prenamjene željezničkih koridora u Osijeku

    PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES AS ELEMENTS OF THE NEW URBAN IDENTITY OF CITIES

    By the start of the 21st century, the majority of the worldā€™s population was living in cities. Therefore, a top priority has been solving the problem of connecting parts of the city divided by traffic infrastructure in the shortest possible manner by using pedestrian paths. The aim of this study was to analyze, systematize, and typologically define the specific types of structures that make this possible, specifically pedestrian bridges located above roads and railway corridors. The primary and secondary requirements that must be met when designing a pedestrian bridge were identified, and an analysis and comparison of examples of constructed pedestrian bridges in Croatia and the world are herein presented. The results of this study enable the conclusion that, in recent times, in the age of the spectacle society and spectacle architecture, pedestrian bridges are simultaneously deemed architecture, engineering, and infrastructure projects. They are becoming new elements in a cityā€™s image and contribute to the creation of a new urban identity. The original design of pedestrian bridges fosters the use of different construction systems and materials in accordance with technical and technological advancements in construction

    Development of Seismic Vulnerability and Exposure Modelsā€”A Case Study of Croatia

    Assessing earthquake risk and building vulnerability requires an exposure model. These exposure models quantify the building stock in terms of structural characteristics, spatial location, and occupancy. The most significant exposure parameters are the structural characteristics of buildings, which must be uniformly covered by structural typologies. Structural typologies that take into account the regional specificities of design and construction provide more accurate and reliable exposure models. Despite the long history of earthquake engineering in the Republic of Croatia, the assessment of exposure and vulnerability of buildings is a rather new concept, hindered by the fact that no city in the Republic of Croatia has a database on the number, types, and characteristics of existing buildings. The article presents the creation of a building exposure model for the city of Osijek, points out the problems and concerns that the realization process brings, and details the practical solutions and strategies that have been used to achieve the set goals

    Microscopic and molecular analysis of Babesia canis in archived and diagnostic specimens reveal the impact of anti-parasitic treatment and postmortem changes on pathogen detection

    Abstract Background Classification of Babesia parasites has traditionally relied on morphological differentiation based on piroplasm size and shape. Molecular typing has subsequently revealed a more complex taxonomy for these piroplasms than previously thought. To evaluate the factors that influence the morphology of Babesia species upon microscopic examination and hence, their taxonomic classification, we performed detailed characterizations of piroplasms from archival and prospective collections of cytological samples of dogs with piroplasmosis before and after death. Merozoite morphology and time of parasite disappearance following imidocarb dipropionate was also investigated. Methods The study was divided into a (i) review of archived cytological slides from confirmed cases of canine piroplasmosis, and (ii) a prospective study of smears and tissue imprints from 15 recently necropsied dogs. The latter group could be further sub-divided into a non-treated group and an imidocarb dipropionate-treated group. Exact times of treatment before death were reviewed. Additional blood smears prepared from the live dogs and taken before therapy were also evaluated in the latter group. Parasite burden per each slide was determined in both studies. The shape and size of merozoites were described from blood smears taken while the dogs were alive and from different organs during necropsy. The results of all measurements were statistically analyzed. Results The morphology and size of merozoites from live dogs corresponded to that of previously described ā€˜largeā€™ Babesia. The morphology and size of merozoites were significantly different (PĀ <Ā 0.001) in postmortem samples, however, and more consistent in shape and size with piroplasm cells previously referred to as ā€˜smallā€™ Babesia. PCR and sequencing confirmed B. canis as the causative agent of disease in all investigated dogs, including in postmortem negative tissue imprints from dogs treated at least 24Ā h before death. Conclusions Changes in the morphology of ā€˜largeā€™ B. canis to ā€˜smallā€™-like Babesia observed by light microscopy appear to represent a common postmortem change. Classification of Babesia parasites into ā€˜largeā€™ and ā€˜smallā€™ Babesia using only microscopy of postmortem slides should be treated with caution. PCR-based methodologies for detection and molecular typing of Babesia spp. may prove valuable for investigating suspected cases of babesiosis following necropsy
