    The Use of Politeness Strategies in Whatsapp Discussions about Sensitive Topics

    The studies about language use in the past several years showed the existence of gender inequalities. According to Lakoff (1975), women are pressured to show the feminine qualities of weakness and frequently subordinate status toward men in a male-dominated society. However, nowadays, women's position in society is equal to men's position. The evidence that women are now equal to men invites the writer to study men's and women's language features and the politeness strategies used by men and women, especially in CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication). This study was a Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) study used to describe the meaning of qualitative data systematically. The result did not align with the previous studies: it showed that women were also aggressive when giving an argument, and politeness strategies were not the most used in the forum discussion; it was bald of record instead. In sum, Herring's (1993) features of women's and men's language were not valid in this study, and some of them need to be revised. Further studies about politeness strategies in CMC should be explored more

    TEACHING ENGLISH TO THE TEACHERS OF SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS AT PANTI SOSIAL BINA GRAHITA BELAIAN KASIH

    ABSTRACT                 All teaches need to improve themselves in terms of content and the teaching methods. Unfortunately, there has been a little enrichment delivered due to the pandemic which still occurs in 2021. This community service, therefore, is delivered to the teachers of special needs students at Panti Sosial Bina Grahita Belaian Kasih since to enrich their English knowledge as well as teaching skills for the special needs students. Needs analysis was administered to find (1) the Present Situation Analysis of the teachers, (2) the Learning Situation Analysis which cover the delivery of the community services, and (3) the Target Situation Analysis which cover the topics delivered during the community services. It was found out that there were twelve (12) teachers who would join this enrichment English class. Since bot all of them were English teachers, the English content should also be discussed during the community services. Next, the community services delivered five times through google meet and zoom meeting, on Wednesdays and Fridays in March 2021. The topics delivered are (1) learning styles and teaching methods for special needs students, (2) the English alphabets, (3) shapes and colors, (4) emotions, and (5) action verbs in English. The community services ran well. For better results, more meetings are needed to enrich the teachers’ teaching skills as well as their English abilities and knowledge, especially which are related to the special needs students

    English for Secretarial Program: Target and Learning Needs of 'Cinta Kasih Tzu Chi' Vocational School Students

    English is one of compulsory subjects in vocational high schools. It is a required school subject as students of vocational school graduates are prepared to work based on their major and skills. In addition, in the workplace context, English is the common foreign language used in and among divisions in the workplace. To help the students use the language appropriately, schools need to prepare them with adequate learning materials. Thus, reliable sources of learning, one of which is English coursebooks, should incorporate appropriate language input for the students specifically devised for vocational school students. Unfortunately, most of the coursebooks contain materials which do not meet target and learning needs of the students who study in vocational schools. Therefore, this study aimed at examining their target and learning needs of English, particularly for those taking secretarial program. In order to achieve the objective of the study, a questionnaire consisting of target and learning needs items was distributed to the subjects of the research. The findings of this research revealed that the target needs of the students who majored in the secretarial program are to be able to communicate in English both in oral and written texts, vocabulary enhancement related to the workplace, and to pass the national exam. As for the learning needs, most of the students are keen on learning English from authentic materials integrated in all language skills.Keywords: materials development, target and learning needs, ES

    Peranan kepala desa selaku pimpinan organisasi pemerintah desa terhadap keberhasilan pelaksanaan tugas perangkat desa sangat penting, sehingga kinerja pegawai akan semakin baik namun kinerja pegawai dalam menjalankan operasional desa banyak sekali pengaruhnya yang membuat pegawai kurang memberikan kinerja terbaiknya. Untuk dapat meningkatkan Kinerja Pegawai dalam sebuah organisasi atau perusahaan, maka dibutuhkan faktor-faktor yang dapat meningkatkan Kinerja itu sendiri. Adapun faktor-faktor tersebut adalah kompensasi, lingkungan kerja dan komunikasi yang baik.Permasalahan dalam penelitian ini adalah apakah ada pengaruh kompensasi, lingkungan kerja dan komunikasi terhadap kinerja pegawai?Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ada pengaruh kompensasi, lingkungan kerja dan komunikasi terhadap kinerja pegawai.Populasi adalah seluruh pegawai kantor desa Metun Sajau dan sampel penelitian sebanyak 30 orang pegawai dengan teknik pengambilan sampel yaitu total sampling. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kuesioner. Alat analisis menggunakan regresi linier berganda.Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini menunjukan ada pengaruh dan signifikan antara komunikasi terhadap Kinerja Pegawai, sehingga Ho ditolak dan  ada pengaruh tetapi tidak signifikan antara kompensasi terhadap Kinerja Pegawai, serta ada pengaruh tetapi tidak signifikan antara lingkungan kerja terhadap Kinerja Pegawai sehingga Ho diterima.Dari hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat digunakan sebagai masukan bagi pihak pemerintah untuk selalu meningkatkan kompensasi, memperbaiki lingkungan fisik di kantor Desa Metun Sajau dan selalu mempertahankan  komunikasi yang baik antara atasan dan bawahan

    Pemanfaatan Air Kelapa Dan Limbah Cair Ampas Tahu Sebagai Tambahan Nutrisi Pertumbuhan Tanaman Cabai Hibrida (Capsicum annum L)

    Limbah air kelapa lebih banyak dibuang belum dimanfaatkan, serta limbah cair ampas tahu yang belum banyak dimanfaatkan pula. Air kelapa banyak mengandung hormon auksin dan sitokinin yang penting dalam pertumbuhan dan jumlah daun pada tanaman. Air kelapa banyak mengandung natrium (Na), kalsium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), ferum (Fe), cuprum (Cu), posfor (P), dan sulfur yang juga bermanfaat bagi pertumbuhan tanaman. Limbah cair ampas tahu mengandung zat-zat seperti protein, kalori, lemak, dan karbohidrat yang dapat di daur ulang oleh mikroba sehingga menjadi unsur hara potensial bagi pertumbuhan tanaman. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penyiraman air kelapa, limbah cair ampas tahu dan campuran keduanya terhadap pertumbuhan cabai hibrida (Capsicum annum L). Peneliatian ini dilaksanakan di Green House Laboratorium Biologi Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta pada bulan Maret 2012. Metode yang digunakan adalah eksperimen, dengan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) 1 faktorial yaitu konsentrasi yang sama (100ml) pada penyiraman air kelapa, limbah cair ampas tahu, serta campuran air kelapa dan limbah cair ampas tahu. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah analisis varian (anava) satu jalur, dan di lanjutkan dengan Fisher’s LSD/ BNT (Beda Nyata Terkecil). Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh tanaman yang memiliki rerata tinggi tanaman tertinggi selama 1 bulan adalah L23 (penyiraman dengan limbah cair ampas tahu) dengan pertambahan tinggi 9,3 cm. Sedangkan tanaman yang memiliki rerata paling rendah adalah L11 (penyiraman dengan air kelapa) dengan pertambahan tinggi 2,3 cm. Tanaman yang memiliki jumlah daun paling banyak selama 1 bulan penelitian adalah perlakuan L23 dengan jumlah daun 22 helai, jumlah daun paling sedikit adalah perlakuan L11 dengan jumlah daun 3 helai. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh nyata terhadap penyiraman limbah cair ampas tahu terhadap pertumbuhan dan tidak terdapat pengaruh nyata terhadap jumlah daun pada tanaman cabai hibrida (Capsicum annum L)

    Chemical and biological reactions of solidification of peat using ordinary portland cement (OPC) and coal ashes

    Construction over peat area have often posed a challenge to geotechnical engineers. After decades of study on peat stabilisation techniques, there are still no absolute formulation or guideline that have been established to handle this issue. Some researchers have proposed solidification of peat but a few researchers have also discovered that solidified peat seemed to decrease its strength after a certain period of time. Therefore, understanding the chemical and biological reaction behind the peat solidification is vital to understand the limitation of this treatment technique. In this study, all three types of peat; fabric, hemic and sapric were mixed using Mixing 1 and Mixing 2 formulation which consisted of ordinary Portland cement, fly ash and bottom ash at various ratio. The mixtures of peat-binder-filler were subjected to the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, bacterial count test and chemical elemental analysis by using XRF, XRD, FTIR and EDS. Two pattern of strength over curing period were observed. Mixing 1 samples showed a steadily increase in strength over curing period until Day 56 while Mixing 2 showed a decrease in strength pattern at Day 28 and Day 56. Samples which increase in strength steadily have less bacterial count and enzymatic activity with increase quantity of crystallites. Samples with lower strength recorded increase in bacterial count and enzymatic activity with less crystallites. Analysis using XRD showed that pargasite (NaCa2[Mg4Al](Si6Al2)O22(OH)2) was formed in the higher strength samples while in the lower strength samples, pargasite was predicted to be converted into monosodium phosphate and Mg(OH)2 as bacterial consortium was re-activated. The Michaelis�Menten coefficient, Km of the bio-chemical reaction in solidified peat was calculated as 303.60. This showed that reaction which happened during solidification work was inefficient. The kinetics for crystallite formation with enzymatic effect is modelled as 135.42 (1/[S] + 0.44605) which means, when pargasite formed is lower, the amount of enzyme secretes is higher

    Studi kasus pada Yayasan X bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran dan analisa hasil exit interview questionnaire karyawan yang keluar pada tahun 2009 dan 2010. Studi kasus ini dilakukan atas dasar pentingnya melihat dimensi atau faktor yang ada, terutama yang berhubungan dengan faktor kepuasan atau ketidak puasan dalam karyawan bekerja didalam Organisasi. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan pengambilan data primer pada Yayasan X, dengan metode deskriptif. Subyek sebanyak 63 orang karyawan yang keluar pada tahun 2009 dan 125 orang karyawan yang keluar pada tahun 2010 pada posisi, level dan status yang berbeda. Hasilnya secara umum memperlihatkan bahwa ada 2 faktor yang seharusnya memotivasi kerja karyawan menjadi sebaliknya yaitu menyebabkan ketidakpuasan pada karyawan, dan ada 2 faktor pula yang mengkonfirmasi alasan mengapa seorang karyawan menjadi tidak puas dan memutuskan untuk meninggalkan Organisasi. Saran-saran diajukan untuk melakukan penelitian selanjutnya untuk lebih memperdalam hasil analisa statistika deskriptif, sehingga penggambaran menjadi lebih mendalam; serta dapat memberikan saran yang akurat bagi organisasi

    This research is motivated by the fact that the principle of politeness is important both in oral and written. Novels as writing must also use levels and conversations that include the principle of politeness in language. The problems in this study are; "How is the use of language politeness in a novel called Me And My Heart by Eva RiyantyLubis. The purpose of this study is to describe the use of language politeness in a novel entitled Me And My Heart by Eva RiyantyLubis. In this research activity, the method used is a descriptive method. The data in this study are dialogues that contain the maxims of politeness in language. While the data sources in this study are conversations, data collection techniques in this study use reading, note-taking, literature, analysis techniques. Based on the results of the study it was concluded that in the novel entitled Me And My Heart by Eva RiyantyLubis it did not fulfill the six maxims of politeness in the language according to Leech, which collected 52 utterances using the principle of politeness in language including a) Maxim's conclusions. b) Maxim agreement. c) Maxim wisdom. d) Maxim of generosity. e) Maxim simplicity. f) Maximally reward

    The Relationship between Social Support and Well-Being in Elementary School in Singkawang

    The objectives of this study are: 1) to describe the level of social support in students at SD Negeri 15 Singkawang, 2) to describe the level of well-being in students at SD Negeri 15 Singkawang, 3) to examine the relationship between social support and well-being in students at SD Negeri 15 Singkawang. This type of research is quantitative correlation design. The population of this study were all students in grades V and VI of SD Negeri 15 Singkawang, totaling 76 students. The population was sampled using saturated sampling technique, the sample used was 76 students. Data collection techniques in this study with questionnaire and scale research instruments. The Social Support Questionnaire amounted to 37 statements, the validity value was in the range of 0.329-0.881 while the reliability value α was 0.945 and the Well-being Scale amounted to 26 statements, the validity value was in the range of 0.305-0.801 while the reliability value α was 0.903 with yes and no answer options. The data analysis techniques used are percentage and correlation. The results showed that the level of student social support was in the low category (57.15%), meaning that students did not get optimal social support from those closest to them while following the learning process at school. The results of the level of well-being of students are in the low category (59.41%), meaning that students have not fully felt happiness or well-being

    A Discussion on a Code Sound Reading System: a Case Study of I Can Read Greenville Language Center

    Article described the code sound reading system applied in I Can Read (ICR) Greenville language center. The research was done qualitatively through the observation of teaching and learning process in three different classes of ICR 1 level at the center. A pre-test and post-test for reading were taken from Book 2 of ICR 1. Participants were three classes with three different teachers having different working experiences. The results of the research were: (1) the use of code sounds in reading was useful to improve students\u27 reading skill which was shown by the increasing of correctly pronounced code sounds; (2) the students\u27 reading skill and reading comprehension had improved, regardless the teachers\u27 teaching style. In conclusion, a code sound reading system is successful in helping students to improve their reading skill and reading comprehension, regardless the teachers\u27 teaching style
