    Effect of adhesive thickness and concrete strength on FRP-Concrete Bonds

    The use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for strengthening, repairing, or rehabilitating concrete structures has become more and more popular in the last 10 years. Irrespective of the type of strengthening used, design is conditioned, among others, by concrete-composite bond failure, normally attributed to stress at the interface between these two materials. Single shear, double shear, and notched beam tests are the bond tests most commonly used by the scientific community to estimate bond strength, effective length, and the bond stress-slip relationship. The present paper discusses the effect of concrete strength and adhesive thickness on the results of beam tests, which reproduce debonding conditions around bending cracks much more accurately. The bond stress-slip relationship was analyzed in a cross section near the inner edge, where stress was observed to concentrate. The ultimate load and the bond stress-slip relationship were visibly affected by concrete strength. Adhesive thickness, in turn, was found to have no significant impact on low-strength concrete but a somewhat greater effect on higher strength materials

    Drought influence over radial growth of Mexican conifers inhabiting mesic and xeric sites

    Drought is a major constraint of forest productivity and tree growth across diverse habitat types. In this study, we investigated the drought responses of four conifer species growing within two locations of differing elevation and climatic conditions in northern Mexico. Two species were selected at a mesic site (Cupressus lusitanica Mill., Abies durangensis Martínez) and the other two species were sampled at a xeric site (Pinus engelmannii Carr., Pinus cembroides Zucc.). Using a dendrochronological approach, we correlated the radial-growth series of each species and the climatic variables. All study species positively responded to wet-cool conditions during winter and spring. Despite the close proximity of species at a mesic site, A. durangensis had high responsiveness to hydroclimatic variability, but C. lusitanica was not responsive. At the xeric site, P. engelmannii and P. cembroides were very responsive to drought severity, differentiated only by the longer time scale of the response to accumulated drought of P. engelmannii. The responsiveness to hydroclimate and drought of these tree species seems to be modulated by site conditions, or by the functional features of each species that are still little explored. These findings indicate that differentiating between mesic and xeric habitats is a too coarse approach in diverse forests with a high topographic heterogeneity.Fil: Pompa García, Marín.     Dioon spinulosum (Zamiaceae), a Notable Exotic Tree in Camagüey

    The identity of a tree cultivated in the city of Camagüey for ornamental purposes was revealed. The tree had become popular due to the inexistence of similar specimens in other gardens of the country. The utilization of botanical methods, like collection management, the use of catalogs and keys, and scientific description and illustrations, facilitated its identification as Dioon spinulosum Dyer & Eichler. (Zamiaceae), a taxon only recorded in Cuba for scientific collections.  The species was described and a key was set up to differentiate the plant to another specimen that belongs to the genus observed on the island, and to determine the possible age of the plant was assessed

    DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5377/universitas.v5i1.1483 UNIVERSITAS (León): Revista Científica de la UNAN León Vol.5(1) 2014, pp 107-117El artículo presenta el análisis del diseño y de la arquitectura empleada en el desarrollo de un sistema, bajo la plataforma Android, que por medio de comandos de voz permite la comunicación de las personas mediante mensajes de texto (SMSs). Se implementan acciones de lectura, recepción, borrado y escritura de SMSs. La idea es permitir que tanto las manos como la vista queden libres y sean útiles en el desarrollo de otras actividades cotidianas como por ejemplo: manejar, hacer ejercicio, cocinar, etc. La funcionalidad está basada en la creación de una gramática libre de contexto que permitió generar un lenguaje finito para que los usuarios interactúen con su teléfono mediante comandos dictados a través de la voz. Para incorporar dicha funcionalidad se empleo una plataforma software que funcionará sobre dispositivos móviles-celulares y que a su vez permitirá acceder a servicios propios como son el envío y la recepción de SMSs, así como también la posibilidad de incorporar tecnologías proporcionadas por terceros y poder lograr la unificación de diversas funcionalidades y soluciones. El sistema puede ser empleado por cualquier persona que posea conocimientos básicos de funcionamiento de tecnologías móviles-celulares que emplean Android y que su sistema vocal se encuentre en buenas condiciones para poder emitir, por medio de su voz, los comandos que se encargan de gobernar el sistema.     Una visión general sobre la implementación de metaheurísticas paralelas en la nube

    Metaheuristics are among the most popular methods for solving hard global optimization problems in many areas of science and engineering. Their parallel implementation applying HPC techniques is a common approach for efficiently using available resources to reduce the time needed to get a good enough solution to hard-to-solve problems. Paradigms like MPI or OMP are the usual choice when executing them in clusters or supercomputers. Moreover, the pervasive presence of cloud computing and the emergence of programming models like MapReduce or Spark have given rise to an increasing interest in porting HPC workloads to the cloud, as is the case with parallel metaheuristics. In this paper we give an overview of our experience with different alternatives for porting parallel metaheuristics to the cloud, providing some useful insights to the interested reader that we have acquired through extensive experimentation.Las metaheurísticas son uno de los métodos más populares en muchas áreas de la ciencia y la ingeniera para la resolución de problemas de optimización global difíciles. Su implementación paralela, aplicando técnicas de HPC, es una aproximación común a la hora de reducir el tiempo necesario para obtener una solución lo suficientemente buena con un uso eficiente de los recursos disponibles. Paradigmas como MPI u OMP son las opciones habituales cuando se ejecutan en clústeres o supercomputadores. Además, la utilización generalizada de la computación en la nube y la aparición de modelos de programación como MapReduce o Spark, han generado un interés creciente por portar aplicaciones HPC a la nube, como ocurre en el caso de las metaheursticas paralelas.
