Freeze-thaw durability of recycled concrete from construction and demolition wastes

Road engineering is one of the most accepted applications for concrete including recycled aggregates from construction and demolition wastes as a partial replacement of the natural coarse aggregates. Amongst the durability concerns of such application, the deterioration due to freeze-thaw cycles is one of the most important causes decreasing the life span of concrete in countries with a continental climate. Moreover, the use of de-icing salts, which is a common practice to prevent ice formation on roadways and walkways, increases the superficial degradation of concrete due to frost-salt scaling. Thus, this paper aims to assess the resistance to frost salt with de-icing salts of two recycled concrete mixtures containing a 50% replacement of the conventional gravel by recycled aggregates both of mixed and ceramic nature, i.e. containing ceramic percentages of 34% and 100%, in comparison to a conventional concrete made with siliceous gravel. Therefore, the surface scaling was evaluated based on EN 1339 (2004) on 28 days cured cylinders, exposed to 7, 14, 21 and 28 freeze-thaw cycles in the presence of sodium chloride solution. Given that no airentraining admixture was used in any of the mixtures, the scaling of both conventional and recycled concretes exceeded the 1 kg/m2 limit established by the European standard. Nonetheless, for the casting surface, the recycled concrete with low ceramic content exhibited a similar behaviour to the conventional concrete, whereas the performance of the recycled concrete with high ceramic content was better. However, as expected, trowelled surfaces showed a worse performance and both recycled concretes had a lower freeze-thaw durability than the conventional mixture. In any case, the results suggested that the composition of the recycled aggregates could be used as a factor to limit the differences in performance between recycled and conventional mixtures

Meeting Summary of the 6th European Workshop on Plant Chromatin 2019 in Cologne, Germany

In June 2019, more than a hundred plant researchers met in Cologne, Germany, for the 6th European Workshop on Plant Chromatin (EWPC). This conference brought together a highly dynamic community of researchers with the common aim to understand how chromatin organization controls gene expression, development, and plant responses to the environment. New evidence showing how epigenetic states are set, perpetuated, and inherited were presented, and novel data related to the three-dimensional organization of chromatin within the nucleus were discussed. At the level of the nucleosome, its composition by different histone variants and their specialized histone deposition complexes were addressed as well as the mechanisms involved in histone post-translational modifications and their role in gene expression. The keynote lecture on plant DNA methylation by Julie Law (SALK Institute) and the tribute session to Lars Hennig, honoring the memory of one of the founders of the EWPC who contributed to promote the plant chromatin and epigenetic field in Europe, added a very special note to this gathering. In this perspective article we summarize some of the most outstanding data and advances on plant chromatin research presented at this workshop

Active employment policies in Spain as an instrument for the reduction of regional inequalities

Las políticas activas de empleo nacen como un instrumento de mejora del grado de ocupabilidad de los desempleados y de reducción de las diferencias sociales a nivel interregional. Actualmente, mediante el Fondo Social Europeo (FSE), se destinan 10.000 millones de euros a financiar programas públicos de empleo. En este artículo se fija, como objetivo principal, analizar el papel que han desempeñado estos recursos públicos en la disminución de las diferencias regionales en España a nivel de comunidades autónomas. Para ello se ha analizado la evolución del índice de Theil durante el período 2002-2017. Los resultados muestran cómo durante el período temporal analizado se han mantenido las diferencias tanto entre los grupos definidos como intragrupos.Active employment policies are born as an instrument to improve the level of employability of the unemployed and to reduce social differences at the interregional level. Currently, through the European Social Fund (ESF), 10 billion euros are allocated to finance public employment programs. In this article, the main objective is to analyze the role played by these public resources in reducing regional differences in Spain at the level of autonomous communities. To this end, the evolution of the Theil index during the period 2002-2017 has been analyzed. The results show how the differences between the defined groups and intragroups have been maintained during the analyzed period

Day-Ahead Price Forecasting for the Spanish Electricity Market

During the last years, electrical systems around the world and in particular the Spanish electric sector have undergone great changes with the focus of turning them into more liberalized and competitive markets. For this reason, in many countries like Spain have appeared electric markets where producers sell and electricity retailers buy the power we consume. All agents involved in this market need predictions of generation, demand and especially prices to be able to participate in them in a more efficient way, obtaining a greater profit. The present work is focused on the context of development of a tool that allows to predict the price of electricity for the next day in the most precise way possible. For such target, this document analyzes the electric market to understand how prices are calculated and who are the agents that can make prices vary. Traditional proposals in the literature range from the use of Game Theory to the use of Machine Learning, Time Series Analysis or Simulation Models. In this work we analyze a normalization of the target variable due to a strong seasonal component in an hourly and daily way to later benchmark several models of Machine Learning: Ridge Regression, K-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machines, Neural Networks and Random Forest. After observing that the best model is Random Forest, a discussion has been carried out on the appropriateness of the normalization for this algorithm. From this analysis it is obtained that the model that gives the best results has been Random Forest without applying the normalization function. This is due to the loss of the close relationship between the objective variable and the electric demand, obtaining an Average Absolute Error of 3.92€ for the whole period of 2016

La acción tutorial en la Universidad de Sevilla: Una apuesta por la docencia de calidad

La Universidad de Sevilla, en su apuesta por una docencia de calidad, contempló, en su I Plan Propio de Docencia (2008-2012), acciones tendentes a fomentar el desarrollo de la orientación y la acción tutorial. La consideración de estas acciones pone de manifiesto la importancia de los sistemas de acogida, la orientación y la tutorización como un elemento esencial de la calidad de la enseñanza. En este trabajo presentamos el proceso que se ha llevado a cabo en la Universidad de Sevilla para potenciar la orientación y la acción tutorial como elementos de una docencia de calidad, las cuales han desembocado en la creación de un Sistema Integral de Orientación y Tutoría (US-Orienta), apoyado por el II Plan Propio de Docencia (2013-2016) y coordinado desde el recién creado Secretariado de Orientación

Diseños de mujer: poses culturales y discursos políticos

"-A ella se le ve que algo raro tiene, que no es una mujer como todas. Parece muy joven, de unos veinticinco años cuanto más, una carita un poco de gata, la nariz chica, respingada, el corte de cara es... más redondo que ovalado, la frente ancha, los cachetes también grandes pero que después se van para abajo en punta, como los gatos." La inolvidable caracterización de Molina en el comienzo de la novela El beso de la mujer araña (1976) da una clave de lectura que se puede prever en esta primera cobertura elegida por el autor para su novela anterior, The Buenos Aires Affair. Algo raro tiene, no es una mujer como todas, es una imagen imborrable que, luciendo sus anchos brazos y hombros, exhibe una falta que no se advierte en el primer impacto: una mujer sin senos, pero con una pose "rara", que la inscribe en la ambigüedad, entre el refinamiento, el travestismo y lo andrógino. Alargando sus manos, se advierte en la imagen el color rojo que sugiere el goteo de la sangre de una asesina. Al lado de ella, la inscripción del título que anuncia otros misterios y otras ambigüedades: el título en inglés es el primer enigma de una trama que contiene un "affair" en el texto como también en la escena política de ese momento. Escritos en letras rojas, como de la misma mano de la figura, aparecen también los nombres de "Manuel Puig" y el de la editorial Sudamericana, que entran a jugar en la ficción de la imagen en otro plano de ambigüedad.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació
