    The impact of tree crops and temperature on the timing of frugivorous bird migration

    Migration has evolved to tackle temporal changes in availability of resources. Climate change has been shown to affect the migration dates of species, which raises the question of whether the variation in the timing of migration is climate or resource dependent? The relative importance of temperature and availability of food as drivers of migration behaviour during both spring and autumn seasons has been poorly studied. Here, we investigated these patterns in frugivorous and granivorous birds (hereafter frugivorous) that are assumed to postpone their autumn migration when there is plenty of food available, which may also advance upcoming spring migration. On the other hand, especially spring migration dates have been negatively connected with increasing temperatures. We tested whether the autumn and spring migration dates of eleven common frugivorous birds depended on the crop size of trees or ambient temperatures using 29 years of data in Finland. The increased crop sizes of trees delayed autumn migration dates; whereas, autumn temperature did not show a significant connection. We also observed a temporal trend towards later departure. Increasing temperature and crop sizes advanced spring arrival dates. Our results support the hypothesis that the timing of autumn migration in the frugivorous birds depends on the availability of food and is weakly connected with the variation in temperature. Importantly, crop size can have carry-over effects and affect the timing of spring arrival possibly because birds have overwintered closer to the breeding grounds after an abundant crop year.Peer reviewe

    The role of urban habitats in the abundance of red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris, L.) in Finland

    Because the amount of urban areas has increased, it is important to investigate the abundance of wildlife species in relation to urban environments. Analyzing the impact of urbanization on the presence of forest-dwelling mammals is of interest due to the possible effects of urbanization on human-wildlife relationships and urban biodiversity. The Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a declining forest species, and its occurrence in urban environments has been inadequately studied. The loss and fragmentation of forests due to urbanization may be detrimental for squirrels, whereas the abundant and predictable food resources and the low number of natural predators in urban areas may encourage squirrels to invade towns. We used large-scale data collected by volunteer bird watchers along a 950 km south-north gradient to study whether the winter abundance of squirrels in Finland is dependent on urbanization, while controlling for effects of habitat type, food abundance (spruce cone crop; number of winter feeding sites), predator abundance (northern goshawk, Accipiter gentilis; feral cat Felis catus), season and latitude. We found that squirrel abundance increased with human population density, number of feeding sites and spruce cone crop and decreased with latitude and season. Feral cats showed weak negative connection with squirrel numbers, but there were no effect of goshawks. Relative squirrel abundance was approximately twice as high in urban habitats than in forests. Artificial feeding rather than a low number of predators may attract squirrels in urban environments. Planting spruce trees in urban environments will also benefit squirrels. Our results indicate that urban areas are an important habitat for the red squirrel even along the northern edge of their distribution range, where natural forest areas are still widespread. We conclude also that a citizen science - based bird survey protocol associated with mammal surveys seems to be a good large-scale monitoring method to study the urbanization of squirrels.Peer reviewe

    Titmice are a better indicator of bird density in Northern European than in Western European forests

The possibility to derive indicators from the tendency of specific species to co-occur with others has been overlooked. Here, we tested whether the abundance of resident titmice can act as a general ecological indicator of forest bird density in European forests. Titmice species are easily identifiable and have a wide distribution, which makes them potentially useful ecological indicators. Migratory birds often use information on the density of resident birds, such as titmice, as a cue for habitat selection. Thus, the density of residents may potentially affect community dynamics. We examined spatio-temporal variation in titmouse abundance and total bird abundance, each measured as biomass, by using long-term citizen science data on breeding forest birds in Finland and France. We analyzed the variation in observed forest bird density (excluding titmice) in relation to titmouse abundance. In Finland, forest bird density linearly increased with titmouse abundance. In France, forest bird density nonlinearly increased with titmouse abundance, the association weakening toward high titmouse abundance. We then analyzed whether the abundance (measured as biomass) of random species sets could predict forest bird density better than titmouse abundance. Random species sets outperformed titmice as an indicator of forest bird density only in 4.4% and 24.2% of the random draws, in Finland and France, respectively. Overall, the results suggest that titmice could act as an indicator of bird density in Northern European forest bird communities, encouraging the use of titmice observations by even less-experienced observers in citizen science monitoring of general forest bird density.Peer reviewe

    Exercise training improves biventricular oxidative metabolism and left ventricular efficiency in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy

    AbstractObjectivesThe aim of this study was to determine the effect of exercise training on myocardial oxidative metabolism and efficiency in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and mild heart failure (HF).BackgroundExercise training is known to improve exercise tolerance and quality of life in patients with chronic HF. However, little is known about how exercise training may influence myocardial energetics.MethodsTwenty clinically stable patients with DCM (New York Heart Association classes I through III) were prospectively separated into a training group (five-month training program; n = 9) and a non-trained control group (n = 11). Oxidative metabolism in both the right and left ventricles (RV and LV) was measured using [11C]acetate and positron emission tomography. Myocardial work power was measured using echocardiography. Myocardial efficiency for forward work was calculated as myocardial work power per mass/LV oxidative metabolism.ResultsSignificant improvements were noted in exercise capacity (Vo2) and ejection fraction in the training group, whereas no changes were observed in the non-trained group. Exercise training reduced both RV and LV oxidative metabolism and elicited a significant increase in LV forward work efficiency, although no significant changes were observed in the non-trained group.ConclusionsExercise training improves exercise tolerance and LV function. This is accompanied by a decrease in biventricular oxidative metabolism and enhanced forward work efficiency. Therefore, exercise training elicits an energetically favorable improvement in myocardial function and exercise tolerance in patients with DCM

    Do large-scale associations in birds imply biotic interactions or environmental filtering?

    Aim There has been a wide interest in the effect of biotic interactions on species' occurrences and abundances at large spatial scales, coupled with a vast development of the statistical methods to study them. Still, evidence for whether the effects of within-trophic-level biotic interactions (e.g. competition and heterospecific attraction) are discernible beyond local scales remains inconsistent. Here, we present a novel hypothesis-testing framework based on joint dynamic species distribution models and functional trait similarity to dissect between environmental filtering and biotic interactions. Location France and Finland. Taxon Birds. Methods We estimated species-to-species associations within a trophic level, independent of the main environmental variables (mean temperature and total precipitation) for common species at large spatial scale with joint dynamic species distribution (a multivariate spatiotemporal delta model) models. We created hypotheses based on species' functionality (morphological and/or diet dissimilarity) and habitat preferences about the sign and strength of the pairwise spatiotemporal associations to estimate the extent to which they result from biotic interactions (competition, heterospecific attraction) and/or environmental filtering. Results Spatiotemporal associations were mostly positive (80%), followed by random (15%), and only 5% were negative. Where detected, negative spatiotemporal associations in different communities were due to a few species. The relationship between spatiotemporal association and functional dissimilarity among species was negative, which fulfils the predictions of both environmental filtering and heterospecific attraction. Main conclusions We showed that processes leading to species aggregation (mixture between environmental filtering and heterospecific attraction) seem to dominate assembly rules, and we did not find evidence for competition. Altogether, our hypothesis-testing framework based on joint dynamic species distribution models and functional trait similarity is beneficial in ecological interpretation of species-to-species associations from data covering several decades and biogeographical regions.Peer reviewe

Asiakirjassa on tunnistettu keskeisiä haasteita sekä niihin liittyviä ratkaisujen suuntia. Kansliapäälliköiden näkemyksen mukaisesti tulevan kahden vaalikauden hallituksilla on edessään seuraavat viisi toisiinsa kytkeytyvää haastetta, jotka edellyttävät päätöksiä: (1) vihreässä siirtymässä on edettävä nopeasti, (2) julkista taloutta on tasapainotettava merkittävästi ja (3) molemmat näistä on tehtävä oikeudenmukaisesti ja yhdenvertaisuutta edistäen, (4) talouskasvun edellytyksiä on vahvistettava ja (5) Suomen turvallisuus ja kriisinkestävyys vaativat lisätoimia. Asiakirjan keskeisin talouspoliittinen sanoma on se, että talouskasvun edellytyksiä parantavat uudistukset käynnistetään nopeasti, sillä vaikutukset ovat viiveisiä. Samalla aloitetaan julkisen talouden tasapainottaminen. Julkisen talouden tasapainoa tulee tavoitella kahden vaalikauden aikana. Talouskasvua ei tavoitella hinnalla millä hyvänsä, vaan sen sijaan panostetaan vihreään siirtymään. Asiakirjassa esitetään 15 pääviestiä ja niihin liittyviä ratkaisujen suuntia, jotka tarjoavat eväitä vaalikeskusteluihin ja hallitusneuvottelujen pohjaksi. Viestien aihealueet ovat vahvasti keskinäisriippuvaisia ja näin vaativat samanaikaista panostusta tulevilla kahdella vaalikaudella
