Kompromi Islam dan Adat pada Praktik Keagamaan Muslim Bugis di Sulawesi Selatan

This article explores the form of compromise between Islam and local tradition (adat) in the religious practices of Muslims in Bugis community in South Sulawesi. Islam is an integral part of Bugis lives and is positioned as the main reference so that it encourages Bugis community members to become more fanatic than others. However, in some cases, it is not uncommon for religious practices that have traditional nuances. In fact, the local tradition is in a position that exceeds the role of religion as reflected in the celebration of Islamic holidays. This condition allows the attraction between religion and local tradition to occur in the practice of everyday life of the Bugis community. The question is at what level do conflicts and compromises occur between local tradition and religion among the Bugis community? To answer this question, an investigation was carried out using qualitative methods that put forward and applying the techniques of participant observation and literature study. The results show that points of compromise were discovered where religion and local tradition complemented each other. The tendency to compromise Islam and local tradition is motivated by not only the low understanding of religion itself but also the desire to maintain the ancestral local traditions that have been practiced for a long time in their community. The compromise of Islam and local tradition in religious practices have resulted in the escape of their respective positions, and it makes the role of religion tends to weaken

US CIVIL WAR MENURUT FORREST CARTER

A novel may reflect the political interests and actions of the author. The author can make a story that is purposed to alter common consciousness. This article uses historicism as an interpretation theory. Historicism is used to avoid careless interpretation. With historicism, the story written in the novel is matched with historical events written in some history books. Forrest Carter writes a lot about US Civil War. He, in purpose, does not write about slavery that is commonly read as the cause of the US Civil War. He writes a lot about the murder of women and children by the northern US army soldiers in southern districts. He also writes a lot about the cooperation of his white character with a Cherokee. Above all written by Forrest Carter, the influence of his life and his political interests are seen.

UTILIZING CLUSTERING TECHNIQUE TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH WRITING PERFORMANCE

This present study aims at exploring the utilization of the clustering technique to enrich students’ performance in writing a descriptive text in English, discovering students’ participation in learning-teaching descriptive text writing using the clustering technique, and finding out the improvement of students’ English writing performance using the clustering technique. This research implies a Mixed-Method Action Research design where researchers act as teachers. The respondents consisted of 30 Vocational High School students. This research uses qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the learning-teaching process of writing descriptive text using the clustering technique and interviewing students. Quantitative data were acquired through the pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II. The results show that implementing the clustering technique in the learning-teaching process enriches students’ performance and attracts students’ participation, attention, activeness, motivation, and seriousness in learning English writing. Pre-test and post-tests prove that the clustering technique enhances students’ English writing performance. The technique helps students to express ideas in English text writing. Students gain 67.49 in the pre-test, up to 75 in the post-test I, and up to 79.87 in the post-test II. The mean improvement percentage shows about 16.6% enhancement from the pre-test, 36.6% from the post-test I, and 86.6% from the post-test II

Utilizing digital picture series to enhance students’ performance in writing narrative text

The contemporary educational environment requires teachers to embrace innovation and creativity to facilitate learning through the use of technology. Digital picture series, as a technology-based approach, can enhance students' writing skills in narrative texts. The purpose of this study is to explore the implementation of digital picture series in learning-teaching English and its impact on students' performance in writing narrative texts. Collaborative classroom action research was used in this study, with 30 respondents consisting of 19 females and 11 males. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and tests. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using the Grammarly application. The findings indicate that the implementation of digital picture series was successful, and students' performance in writing narrative texts improved from 60.55 to 75.00. The implementation process followed a structured approach consisting of need analysis, planning, acting, observing, and reflecting in cycle I, followed by problem-solving and re-planning, action, observation, and reflection in cycle II. Researchers recommend further researchers evaluating the effectiveness of digital picture series and placing greater emphasis on writing components

Karl Marx’s Criticism on Religion

This article discusses about the uniqueness of religion among other academic disciplines. Religion is almost exclusively approached as an object of study. This paper presents a descriptive criticism of Islam in Marx's critique of religion. The study then found that Islam and Marxism is essentially a contradiction particularly striking in view of the unity-an. Marx, based on the philosophy of Marxism; man- made ​​religion and religion does not make the man. However, Muslims believe in the spiritual concept of the infinite in which Islam describes the man as the ground; land; ground, or it can be said that religion, in this case, God created man, not vice versa.Artikel ini membahas tentang keunikan agama di antara disiplin akademis lainnya. Islamic Ethics and Abortion In The Schools of Hanafiyah and Malikyah

This study aims to discuss about abortion in Islamic ethical schools; Hanafiah and Malikiah Schools. Ethics and abortion are investigated, as well as their opinions and arguments about it. This is a library research conducted in order to find preconditions and arguments on abortion based on Islamic ethics. It sees and analyzes their different interpretation and understanding on abortion. This study then find that for Hanafiyans School, the iddah happens after 120 day or 4 months, while some of others say that it happens after 80 days there are some also state that it happens after 42 days. Otherwise, Malikiyans mention that it happens after 40 days. Abortion before iddah for most of Hanafiyah School is permitted. In contrast, most of Malikiyans totally forbid it even the fetus is still in the contraception period.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendiskusikan tentang aborsi dalam mazhab-mazhab etika Islam, yakni Hanafiah dan Malikiah. Etika dan aborsi diselidiki, serta pendapat dan argumen tentang hal itu. Ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan dilakukan untuk mencari prasyarat dan argumen tentang aborsi berdasarkan etika Islam. Ia melihat dan menganalisa perbedaan interpretasi dan pemahaman tentang aborsi. Penelitian ini kemudian menemukan bahwa untuk mazhab Hanafy, masa iddah terjadi setelah 120 hari atau 4 bulan, sementara beberapa yang lain mengatakan bahwa itu terjadi setelah 80 hari ada beberapa juga menyatakan bahwa itu terjadi setelah 42 hari. Jika tidak, penganut Malikiyah menyebutkan bahwa itu terjadi setelah 40 hari. Aborsi sebelum iddah bagi sebagian besar mazhab Hanafy diperbolehkan. Sebaliknya, sebagian besar penganut Malikiyah benar-benar melarang bahkan janin masih dalam jangka kontrasepsi

The Concept of God in Christianity: an Islamic Perspective

This article provides a concept of God in the Christianity. The concept is based on the Islamic perspective. It briefly explains how the Christian concept of God explores descriptive and then compare and contrast these insights, the concept of God which is based on the two Abrahamic faiths, Christianity and Islam. It also looks at some of the criticism of Islam on the concept of God in Christianity. The study then found that even those two religions have the same root as the Abrahamic religions but they actually have different interpretations of the concept of God itself. Students’ Perceptions on the Use of Group Discussion Method towards English Speaking Proficiency

The researchers place a great deal of emphasis on the Group Discussion Method since it is necessary for students towards their communication proficiency. Communication is an important element to achieve better understanding among communicators. Therefore, this present study aims to discover students’ perception of using the Group Discussion Method towards their proficiency in English speaking. This research relays on a quantitative descriptive research design using a questionnaire to collect data. The questionnaire was distributed online to thirty-four respondents. The respondents are fifth-semester students of the English Language Education Department of Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta who has learned English speaking using the Group Discussion Method. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive perceptions presentation. The research findings indicate that 80% of respondents state that Group Discussions Method is an interactive, friendly, innovative, and interaction-built approach between teacher and students. Besides, it also increases their English speaking proficiency since they are learning in a group where they are required to talk and discuss in English. This research is limited to small-scale respondents; thus, further researchers are recommended to conduct research with wide-scale respondents

Kampung Madinah: The Construction of Jamaah Tabligh for the Arabization Process in Magetan, East Java

Arabization is not always identically carried out by immigrants of Arab descent, but non-Arab communities can carry out the Arabization process. This study aims to explain the Arabization process by the Jamaah Tabligh (JT) group by establishing the Kampung Madinah of Temboro Village. This study collects qualitative data through observation, interviews, and a literature study with descriptive analysis. The findings show that the existence of JT in Temboro Village has resulted in a shift in community culture from secular to religious. The role of the JT leadership became an emerging factor in the Arabization process in forming a religious society. Likewise, JT's persuasive approach through education and religious activities facilitates public acceptance. The naming of Kampung Madinah in Temboro is driven by various Arabic symbols used, e.g., daily conversations, activities, and clothes. The existence of JT succeeds in constructing Temboro people's habits into “Islamic habits.” This study is limited to Kampung Madinah in Temboro as a research focus; therefore, it is recommended that further researchers conduct comparative studies on the Arabization process
