An enumerative method for the solution of linear complementarity problems

    Get PDF
In this report an enumerative method for the solution of the Linear Complementarity Problem (LCP) is presented. This algorithm completely processes the LCP, and does not require any particular property of the LCP to apply. That is the algorithm terminates after either finding all the solutions of an LCP or establishing that no solution exists. The method is extended to also process the Second Linear Complementarity Problem (SLCP), a problem which has been introduced to represent the general quadratic program involving unrestricted variables

The Connecticut River Watershed encompasses approximately 28,500 square kilometers making it the largest river ecosystem in New England (Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 2010). The Connecticut River Watershed includes the states of NH, VT, CT, and MA (Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 2010). The Connecticut River begins at the Fourth Connecticut Lake on the border of Canada and flows approximately 660 km to Old Saybrook, CT where it empties into the Long Island Sound. By the time the river reaches the northern border of Massachusetts, it has descended approximately 58 meters (Connecticut River Joint Commissions, 2010)

The effect of tillage and weed control programs on ‘LCP 85-384’ sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids) growth and yield and on economics was evaluated over two growing seasons. When row shoulders and middles were not tilled in March soil temperature in the non-cultivated sugarcane drill early in the growing season was equal to that where March tillage was performed. Sugarcane and sugar yield were each equivalent for the full season tillage (off-bar tillage in March plus layby tillage in May) and the no-till program. Weeds were effectively controlled with a March application of hexazinone at 0.59 kg ai/ha plus diuron at 2.10 kg ai/ha. For the no-till program with herbicide banded in March compared with full season tillage, net return was increased 32.56/ha.Inasubsequentstudyconductedatfivelocationssugaryieldwasincreased8.632.56/ha. In a subsequent study conducted at five locations sugar yield was increased 8.6% and net return was increased 152.68/ha when sugarcane was not tilled in March. Sugar yield was increased 8.0% and net return was increased $143.88/ha when layby tillage in May was eliminated. Mechanical removal of crop residue remaining on the soil surface three weeks after harvest of LCP 85-384 with a combine harvester was compared with burning. Tillage efficiency in March was not reduced when the residue was mechanically removed from the row top and placed in the row middle. Sugar yield was reduced an average of 7.9% when sugarcane residue was not removed compared with mechanical removal or burning in December. Research was expanded to also include mechanical removal of sugarcane residue in January, February, or March. For each residue removal treatment off-bar tillage in March (with or without) was included. Allowing crop residue to remain on the soil surface until March reduced both early season sugarcane height and shoot population when compared with December residue removal. Sugar yield was equivalent when crop residue was removed in December by burning or mechanically and averaged 8,670 kg/ha. Delaying mechanical removal of residue until February or March decreased sugar yields an average of around 13% compared with December burn or mechanical removal

Competências em Internacionalização e Inovação em Biotecnologia no Brasil

This paper draws on results of research carried out on Brazilian biotechnology businesses evolution, from 2001 to 2004. The study is aimed at identifying elements of international market orientation and innovation. The empirical research updates information on biotechnology companies’ in state of Minas Gerais (MG). Using clusters, or ‘local productive arrangements’ perspectives, two characteristics of enterprises are observed: 1) the building up of internationalization competences; 2) the technological innovation potentials. A detailed questionnaire was applied to entrepreneurs and executives of a 42 sample of 75 operating companies identified. Results evidenced orientation towards internationalization, export growth, intention to export, creation of competence to cope with internationalizing. As for entrepreneurial development, despite negative company growth, new entrant companies are registered with higher innovation potentials and abilities to global products. Such new entrants are receiving venture capital investments, which indicate larger volumes of financial and organizational resources. This paper draws on results of research carried out on Brazilian biotechnology businesses evolution, from 2001 to 2004.

This paper described the path of Vila Rosario project that had its roots in empathic design, but finally built on Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. The study was conducted in 2005-2008 in Vila Rosario about 20 km north of downtown Rio de Janeiro. It focused on the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis. The paper describes our design approach, process, drivers, many design outcomes, and our tests. It ends with a discussion of the implications of our approach to design
