    Standards-based wireless sensor networks for power system condition monitoring

    This paper assesses the industrial needs motivating interest in wireless monito ring within the power industry, and reviews applications of WSN technology for substation condition monitoring (Section 2). A key contribution is the identification of a set of technical requirements for substation - based WSNs, focused around security requi rements, robustness to RF noise, and other utility - specific concerns (Section 3). Section 4 comprehensively assesses the suitability of various IWSN protocols for substation environments, using these requirements. A case study implementation of one standar d, ISA100.11a, is reported in Section 5, along with deployment experience. The paper concludes by describing future research challenges for WSN protocols which are specific to this domain

    Conservative management versus open reduction and internal fixation for mid-shaft clavicle fractures in adults - The Clavicle Trial: Study protocol for a multicentre randomized controlled trial

    Background: Clavicle fractures account for around 4% of all fractures and up to 44% of fractures of the shoulder girdle. Fractures of the middle third (or mid-shaft) account for approximately 80% of all clavicle fractures. Management of this group of fractures is often challenging and the outcome can be unsatisfactory. In particular it is not clear whether surgery produces better outcomes than non-surgical management. Currently there is much variation in the use of surgery and a lack of good quality evidence to inform our decision.Methods/Design: We aim to undertake a multicentre randomised controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness and safety of conservative management versus open reduction and internal fixation for displaced mid-shaft clavicle fractures in adults. Surgical treatment will be performed using the Acumed clavicle fixation system. Conservative management will consist of immobilisation in a sling at the side in internal rotation for 6 weeks or until clinical or radiological union. We aim to recruit 300 patients. These patients will be followed-up for at least 9 months. The primary endpoint will be the rate of non-union at 3 months following treatment. Secondary endpoints will be limb function measured using the Constant-Murley Score and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) Score at 3 and 9 months post-operatively.Discussion: This article presents the protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial. It gives extensive details of, and the basis for, the chosen methods, and describes the key measures taken to avoid bias and to ensure validity.Trial Registration: United Kingdom Clinical Research Network ID: 8665.     Strengthening the role of community health workers in supporting the recovery of ill, undernourished children post hospital discharge: qualitative insights from key stakeholders in Bangladesh and Kenya

    Background: Even when undernourished children in low- and middle-income countries are treated using World Health Organisation recommended guidelines, they remain at elevated risk of death following hospital discharge. The role of community health workers (CHWs) in supporting post-discharge recovery to improve outcomes has not been adequately explored. Methods: Qualitative research was conducted as part of the Childhood Acute Illnesses and Nutrition (CHAIN) Network in rural and urban Bangladesh and Kenya. Interviews were conducted with family members of a total of 64 acutely ill children admitted in four hospitals (two rural and two urban- across both contexts). Children included those with undernutrition, and interviews were repeated in family members’ homes over several months. Data collected from families were supplemented by observations in facilities and homes, key informant interviews with CHWs and policy makers in Bangladesh, and a review of relevant guidelines. Findings: Guidelines suggest that CHWs could play a role not only in initially referring undernourished children to hospital, but also in supporting recovery post-discharge. However, the specific mechanisms to link CHWs into hospital discharge and post-discharge support processes are not specified. Data suggest a range of access and communication challenges that community health workers (CHWs) could potentially contribute towards overcoming. However, few families we interviewed reported any therapeutic interactions with CHWs post-discharge, especially in Kenya. Although CHWs are generally available in communities, they face significant challenges in conducting their roles, including unmanageable workloads, few incentives, lack of equipment and supplies and inadequate support from supervisors and some community members. Conclusion/recommendations: There is need for context sensitive policy and guidance documents that include specific recommendations on post-discharge linkage or down-referral to support for vulnerable children. Consideration should be given to introducing and supporting a dedicated staff member (whether defined as a CHW or patient advocate) whose tasks and responsibilities include playing a linking role between family members and community-based post-discharge support services. These additional tasks should take into consideration the broader responsibilities of CHWs, and consider recognised challenges such as appropriate recognition, training and remuneration. Potential interventions need to be evaluated in carefully designed and conducted studies

    Geographic variation in plant community structure of salt marshes: species, functional and phylogenetic perspectives.

    In general, community similarity is thought to decay with distance; however, this view may be complicated by the relative roles of different ecological processes at different geographical scales, and by the compositional perspective (e.g. species, functional group and phylogenetic lineage) used. Coastal salt marshes are widely distributed worldwide, but no studies have explicitly examined variation in salt marsh plant community composition across geographical scales, and from species, functional and phylogenetic perspectives. Based on studies in other ecosystems, we hypothesized that, in coastal salt marshes, community turnover would be more rapid at local versus larger geographical scales; and that community turnover patterns would diverge among compositional perspectives, with a greater distance decay at the species level than at the functional or phylogenetic levels. We tested these hypotheses in salt marshes of two regions: The southern Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States. We examined the characteristics of plant community composition at each salt marsh site, how community similarity decayed with distance within individual salt marshes versus among sites in each region, and how community similarity differed among regions, using species, functional and phylogenetic perspectives. We found that results from the three compositional perspectives generally showed similar patterns: there was strong variation in community composition within individual salt marsh sites across elevation; in contrast, community similarity decayed with distance four to five orders of magnitude more slowly across sites within each region. Overall, community dissimilarity of salt marshes was lowest on the southern Atlantic Coast, intermediate on the Gulf Coast, and highest between the two regions. Our results indicated that local gradients are relatively more important than regional processes in structuring coastal salt marsh communities. Our results also suggested that in ecosystems with low species diversity, functional and phylogenetic approaches may not provide additional insight over a species-based approach

    Single Spin Asymmetry ANA_N in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

    We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin asymmetry ANA_N at the center of mass energy s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV in elastic proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The ANA_N was measured in the four-momentum transfer squared tt range 0.003t0.0350.003 \leqslant |t| \leqslant 0.035 \GeVcSq, the region of a significant interference between the electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of ANA_N and its tt-dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated by the Pomeron amplitude at this s\sqrt{s}, we conclude that this measurement addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

    Energy dependence of acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectrum at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN=19.6\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6 and 200 GeV

    The acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectra, where the known hadronic sources have been subtracted from the inclusive dielectron mass spectra, are reported for the first time at mid-rapidity yee<1|y_{ee}|<1 in minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6 and 200 GeV. The excess mass spectra are consistently described by a model calculation with a broadened ρ\rho spectral function for Mee<1.1M_{ee}<1.1 GeV/c2c^{2}. The integrated dielectron excess yield at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6 GeV for 0.4<Mee<0.750.4<M_{ee}<0.75 GeV/c2c^2, normalized to the charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity, has a value similar to that in In+In collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 17.3 GeV. For sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV, the normalized excess yield in central collisions is higher than that at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 17.3 GeV and increases from peripheral to central collisions. These measurements indicate that the lifetime of the hot, dense medium created in central Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV is longer than those in peripheral collisions and at lower energies.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Isolation of Flow and Nonflow Correlations by Two- and Four-Particle Cumulant Measurements of Azimuthal Harmonics in sNN=\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 200 GeV Au+Au Collisions

    A data-driven method was applied to measurements of Au+Au collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 200 GeV made with the STAR detector at RHIC to isolate pseudorapidity distance Δη\Delta\eta-dependent and Δη\Delta\eta-independent correlations by using two- and four-particle azimuthal cumulant measurements. We identified a component of the correlation that is Δη\Delta\eta-independent, which is likely dominated by anisotropic flow and flow fluctuations. It was also found to be independent of η\eta within the measured range of pseudorapidity η<1|\eta|<1. The relative flow fluctuation was found to be 34%±2%(stat.)±3%(sys.)34\% \pm 2\% (stat.) \pm 3\% (sys.) for particles of transverse momentum pTp_{T} less than 22 GeV/cc. The Δη\Delta\eta-dependent part may be attributed to nonflow correlations, and is found to be 5%±2%(sys.)5\% \pm 2\% (sys.) relative to the flow of the measured second harmonic cumulant at Δη>0.7|\Delta\eta| > 0.7

    Elliptic flow of electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays in Au+Au collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200, 62.4, and 39 GeV

    We present measurements of elliptic flow (v2v_2) of electrons from the decays of heavy-flavor hadrons (eHFe_{HF}) by the STAR experiment. For Au+Au collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV we report v2v_2, for transverse momentum (pTp_T) between 0.2 and 7 GeV/c using three methods: the event plane method (v2v_{2}{EP}), two-particle correlations (v2v_2{2}), and four-particle correlations (v2v_2{4}). For Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 62.4 and 39 GeV we report v2v_2{2} for pT<2p_T< 2 GeV/c. v2v_2{2} and v2v_2{4} are non-zero at low and intermediate pTp_T at 200 GeV, and v2v_2{2} is consistent with zero at low pTp_T at other energies. The v2v_2{2} at the two lower beam energies is systematically lower than at sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV for pT<1p_T < 1 GeV/c. This difference may suggest that charm quarks interact less strongly with the surrounding nuclear matter at those two lower energies compared to sNN=200\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV.Comment: Version accepted by PR

    Centrality and transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow of multi-strange hadrons and ϕ\phi meson in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

    We present high precision measurements of elliptic flow near midrapidity (y<1.0|y|<1.0) for multi-strange hadrons and ϕ\phi meson as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at center of mass energy sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 200 GeV. We observe that the transverse momentum dependence of ϕ\phi and Ω\Omega v2v_{2} is similar to that of π\pi and pp, respectively, which may indicate that the heavier strange quark flows as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. This observation constitutes a clear piece of evidence for the development of partonic collectivity in heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energy. Number of constituent quark scaling is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for both 0-30%\% and 30-80%\% collision centrality. There is an indication of the breakdown of previously observed mass ordering between ϕ\phi and proton v2v_{2} at low transverse momentum in the 0-30%\% centrality range, possibly indicating late hadronic interactions affecting the proton v2v_{2}.Comment: 7 pages and 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter
