Esters of Cinnamic Acid as Green Plasticizers for Polylactide Formulations with Improved Ductility

[EN] This study demonstrates the potential of different cinnamate esters, namely methyl trans-cinnamate (MC), isobutyl cinnamate (IBC), allyl cinnamate (AC), and ethyl cinnamate (EC), as environmentally friendly plasticizers for polylactide (PLA). Plasticized PLA formulations with a constant nominal wt% of 20 of each plasticizer are compounded in a twin-screw co-rotating extruder and subsequently processed by injection molding. The results show exceptional plasticization efficiency of AC with an increase in elongation at break from 3.9% (neat PLA), up to 339.4% and a remarkable increase in impact strength, thus showing great potential to overcome the main drawback related to PLA intrinsic brittleness. The incorporation of cinnamates in a PLA matrix leads to a decrease in Tg from 61.7 °C down to 36.1 °C for the plasticized PLA formulation containing 20 wt% AC. Thermogravimetry analysis reveals that a slight plasticizer loss occurs during processing, as it happens with other monomeric plasticizers, but this phenomenon does not limit their plasticization efficiency. Therefore, the results obtained in this study confirm the suitability of a new family of organic compounds derived from the esterification of cinnamic acid as green plasticizers for PLA with improved toughness, with comparable, or even superior, ductile properties of typical plasticizers for PLA.This research is a part of the grant PID2020-116496RB-C22, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and the grant TED2021-131762A-I00, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by the European Union "NextGenerationEU"/PRTR. Thirty million people worldwide consume each day nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), a heterogeneous group of pharmaceuticals used for its analgesic, antipyretic, and anti- inflammatory properties. Recent studies report high NSAID concentrations in wastewater treat- ment plant effluents, in surface, ground, and drinking water, and in sediments. NSAIDs are also known to induce toxicity on aquatic organisms. However, toxicity in natural ecosystems is not usu- ally the result of exposure to a single substance but to a mixture of toxic agents, yet only a few studies have evaluated the toxicity of mixtures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity induced by diclofenac (DCF), ibuprofen (IBP), and their mixture on a species of commercial inter- est, the common carp Cyprinus carpio. The median lethal concentration of IBP and DCF was determined, and oxidative stress was evaluated using the following biomarkers: lipid peroxidation and activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxi- dase. Cyto-genotoxicity was evaluated by micronucleus test, comet assay, and the specific activity of caspase-3. Results show that DCF, IBP, and a mixture of these pharmaceuticals induced free radical production, oxidative stress and cyto-genotoxicity in tissues of C. carpio. However, a greater effect was elicited by the mixture than by either pharmaceutical alone in some biomarkers evaluated, particularly in gill.Secretaria de Investigacion y Estudios Avanzados de la UAEM (Project 3722/ 2014CID)

In this paper, a learning project is explained which is being carried out at the school of computer science at the University of Seville. The aim is that students receive knowledge of assistive technologies when in fact there is no this discipline in our curricula. So the best way, it is programming final studies projects in this field. We want to make the projects have a real application and can solve difficulties that children with Cerebral Palsy have in their daily activities in the school.

Bats are indispensable for the pollination of crops, the control of insects and of agricultural and human pests that can be zoonotic vectors. However, the status of the communities and their biological structure in the Indio Maíz Reserve, which in turn function as bioindicators of agroecosystem conservation, is unknown. For this purpose, the agroecosystems of the reserve were characterized. Fog nets were used to capture specimens recording weight, size, and sexual status. They were taxonomically identified by agroecosystem. The comparison between these is the result of the biodiversity and similarity indices. 384 individuals and 45 species distributed in eight families and ten subfamilies were captured. 71% of all individuals are in good health. The Shannon rain forest index was the highest of all agroecosystems. The Filostomidos subfamily was more representative in terms of species. This family appears with the most representativeness in terms of species that are distributed equally. This agrees with other studies carried out on the Phylostomid family since these groups of animals are more intolerant to habitat disturbance.

Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance (MGUS) are two entities that share pathophysiological mechanisms. The aim herein, was to assess the prevalence of MGUS in patients with HFpEF and no left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, as well as its association with a pre-specified clinical endpoint at 12 months. The present study prospectively enrolled 69 patients admitted with HF, with ejection fraction ≥ 50%, and LV wall thickness < 12 mm. All patients were screened for MGUS. Clinical events were determined over a 12 month follow-up. The pre-specified composite clinical endpoint was readmission for HF or death. The prevalence of MGUS in this population was 13%. There were no differences in the incidence of the composite clinical endpoint between patients with and without MGUS. Multivariate analysis showed that treatment with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) was associated with fewer clinical events (HR: 0.153, 95% CI: 0.037-0.622, p = 0.009) and indicated a trend to lower risk of readmission for HF and death. Beta-blockers were associated with lower rates of the composite clinical endpoint (HR: 0.192, 95% CI: 0.05-0.736, p = 0.016), readmission for HF (HR: 0.272, 95% CI: 0.087-0.851, p = 0.025) and indicated a trend to lower mortality. Moreover, potassium serum levels > 5 mEq/L were associated with higher rates of the composite endpoint (HR: 6.074, 95% CI: 1.6-22.65, p = 0.007). The prevalence of MGUS in patients with HFpEF without hypertrophy was 3-fold that of the general population. There was no significant correlation between clinical outcomes and the presence of MGUS. Beta-blockers and ACEIs/ARBs reduced the composite of mortality and readmissions for HF in HFpEF patients. Hyperpotassemia was related to worse prognosis. This work was supported by grants from Instituto de Salut Carlos III (PI19/00655), financed jointly with European Regional Development Funds (ERDF).S

Artículo cientifico en modalidad embargadoThe hypoglycemic pharmaceutical glibenclamide (GLB) is widely used around the world. This medication is released into the environment by municipal, hospital and industrial wastewater discharges. Although there are reports of its environmental occurrence in the scientific literature, toxicity studies on aquatic species of commercial interest such as the common carp Cyprinus carpio are scarce. The present study aimed to evaluate the oxidative stress induced on C. carpio by environmentally relevant concentrations of GLB. Biomarkers of oxidative damage such as hydroperoxide content, lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl content were evaluated as well as the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase. The concentration of GLB was determined in water as well as in gill, liver, muscle, brain and blood of carp at 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. The findings obtained in the study prove that GLB induces in- creases in biomarkers of oxidative damage and antioxidant enzyme activity in the teleost C. carpio, that his response is not concentration dependent and that the organs evaluated bioconcentrate this hypo- glycemic agent. These findings permit us to conclude that the presence of GLB in water bodies represents a risk for aquatic species
