In this work we present an exploratory study of the solving process of a modelling task. In this task the selection of a family of functions suitable to the phenomenon that is modelled by studying the qualitative behaviour of this phenomenon should be the key of the solving process. Besides, the parameter and its meaning in the canonical form of the family of functions, should be the response to the selection of an appropriate model. This is precisely the starting point of our investigation where we intend to test the hypothesis that the qualitative analysis of the phenomenon and the behaviour of families of functions, are revealed as the guiding and control mechanism of the entire modeling process
Representation and factorization theorems for almost-L-p-spaces
[EN] We extend the notions of p-convexity and p-concavity for Banach ideals of measurable functions following an asymptotic procedure. We prove a representation theorem for the spaces satisfying both properties as the one that works for the classical case: each almost p-convex and almost p-concave space is order isomorphic to an almost-L-p-space. The class of almost-L-p-spaces contains, in particular, direct sums of (infinitely many) L-p-spaces with different norms, that are not in general p-convex nor p-concave -. We also analyze in this context the extension of the Maurey Rosenthal factorization theorem that works for p-concave operators acting in p-convex spaces. In this way we provide factorization results that allow to deal with more general factorization spaces than L-p-spaces. (C) 2019 Royal Dutch Mathematical Society (KWG). Published by Elsevier B.V. Optimal extensions of compactness properties for operators on Banach function spaces
[EN] Compactness type properties for operators acting in Banach function spaces are not always preserved when the operator is extended to a bigger space. Moreover, it is known that there exists a maximal (weakly) compact linear extension of a (weakly) compact operator if and only if its maximal continuous linear extension to its optimal domain is (weakly) compact. We show that the same happens if we consider AM-compactness for the operator, and we give some partial results regarding Dunford-Pettis operators. Narrow operators-considered as a family defined by a weak compactness type property-are also analyzed from this point of view. Finally, we provide some applications of the fact that an operator from a Banach function space extends to a narrow operator if and only if it is narrow. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Flexible Hybrid Electrodes for Continuous Measurement of the Local Temperature in Long-Term Wounds
[EN] Long-term wounds need a continuous assessment of different biophysical parameters for their treatment, and there is a lack of affordable biocompatible devices capable of obtaining that uninterrupted flow of data. A portable prototype that allows caregivers to know the local temperature behavior of a long-term wound over time and compare it with different reference zones has been developed. Alternative flexible substrates, screen-printing techniques, polymeric inks, and an embedded system have been tested to achieve potential indicators of the status and evolution of chronic wounds. The final system is formed by temperature sensors attached to a flexible and stretchable medical-grade substrate, where silver conductive tracks have been printed as interconnections with the data-acquisition unit. In addition, a specific datalogger has been developed for this system. The whole set will enable health personnel to acquire the temperature of the wound and its surroundings in order to make decisions regarding the state and evolution of the wound. This research was supported by the Spanish Government/FEDER funds (RTI2018-100910B-C43) (MINECO/FEDER). The Köthe Dual of an Abstract Banach Lattice
We analyze a suitable definition of Kothe dual for spaces of integrable functions with respect to vector measures defined on delta-rings.
This family represents a broad class of Banach lattices, and nowadays it seems to be the biggest class of spaces supported by integral
structures, that is, the largest class in which an integral representation of some elements of the dual makes sense. In order to check
the appropriateness of our definition, we analyze how far the coincidence of the Kothe dual with the topological dual is preserved.M. A. Next generation flow for minimally-invasive blood characterization of MGUS and multiple myeloma at diagnosis based on circulating tumor plasma cells (CTPC)
© The Author(s) 2018.Here, we investigated for the first time the frequency and number of circulating tumor plasma cells (CTPC) in peripheral blood (PB) of newly diagnosed patients with localized and systemic plasma cell neoplasms (PCN) using next-generation flow cytometry (NGF) and correlated our findings with the distinct diagnostic and prognostic categories of the disease. Overall, 508 samples from 264 newly diagnosed PCN patients, were studied. CTPC were detected in PB of all active multiple myeloma (MM; 100%), and smoldering MM (SMM) patients (100%), and in more than half (59%) monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) cases (p <0.0001); in contrast, CTPC were present in a small fraction of solitary plasmacytoma patients (18%). Higher numbers of CTPC in PB were associated with higher levels of BM infiltration and more adverse prognostic features, together with shorter time to progression from MGUS to MM (p <0.0001) and a shorter survival in MM patients with active disease requiring treatment (p ≤ 0.03). In summary, the presence of CTPC in PB as assessed by NGF at diagnosis, emerges as a hallmark of disseminated PCN, higher numbers of PB CTPC being strongly associated with a malignant disease behavior and a poorer outcome of both MGUS and MM.This work has been supported by the International Myeloma Foundation-Black Swan Research Initiative and the EuroFlow Consortium; Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Cáncer (CIBER-ONC; Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Madrid, Spain and FONDOS FEDER), numbers: CB16/12/00400, CB16/12/00369, CB16/12/00489 and CB16/12/00233; grant SA079U14 from the Consejería de Educación, Junta de Castilla y León, Valladolid, Spain and; grant DTS15/00119 from Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Madrid, Spain.
