    Economic Competition and the Energy Sector: The Electricity and Natural Gas Markets

    Despite the recent energy reforms in Mexico, the conditions under which some economic sectors operate in Mexico reflect a reality that is still far from a competitive marketplace, and the benefits that such markets generate. The authors of this paper present three factors that, if not recognized in a timely manner, may limit the effective application of the most recent reform in the natural gas and electricity industries.     Genomic contextualisation of ancient DNA molecular data from an Argentinian fifth pandemic Vibrio cholerae infection.

    Specific lineages of serogroup O1 Vibrio cholerae are notorious for causing cholera pandemics, of which there have been seven since the 1800s. Much is known about the sixth pandemic (1899–1923) and the ongoing seventh pandemic (1961–present), but we know very little about the bacteriology of pandemics 1 to 5. Moreover, although we are learning about the contribution of non-O1 non-pandemic V. cholerae to cholera dynamics during the current pandemic, we know almost nothing about their role in the past. A recent ancient DNA study has presented what may be the first molecular evidence of a V. cholerae infection from the fifth cholera pandemic period (1886–1887 AD) in Argentina. Here, we place the molecular evidence from that study into the genomic context of non-pandemic V. cholerae from Latin America and elsewhere, and show that a gene fragment amplified from ancient DNA is most similar to that of V. cholerae from the Americas, and from Argentina. Our results corroborate and reinforce the findings of the original study, and collectively suggest that even in the 1880s, non-pandemic V. cholerae local to the Americas may have caused sporadic infections in Argentina, just as we know this to have happened during the seventh pandemic in Latin America

    Alternative end-joining originates stable chromosome aberrations induced by etoposide during targeted inhibition of DNA-PKcs in ATM-deficient tumor cells

    ATM and DNA-PKcs coordinate the DNA damage response at multiple levels following the exposure to chemotherapy. The Topoisomerase II poison etoposide (ETO) is an effective chemotherapeutic agent that induces DNA double-strand breaks (DSB), but it is responsible from the chromosomal rearrangements frequently found in therapy-related secondary tumors. Targeted inhibition of DNA-PKcs in ATM-defective tumors combined with radio- or chemotherapy has been proposed as relevant therapies. Here, we explored the DNA repair mechanisms and the genetic consequences of targeting the non-oncogenic addiction to DNA-PKcs of ATM-defective tumor cells after exposure to ETO. We demonstrated that chemical inhibition of DNA-PKcs followed by treatment with ETO resulted in the accumulation of chromatid breaks and decreased mitotic index in both A-T cells and ATM-knocked-down (ATMkd) tumor cells. The HR repair process in DNA-PKcs-inhibited ATMkd cells amplified the RAD51 foci number, with no correlated increase in sister chromatid exchanges. The analysis of post-mitotic DNA lesions presented an augmented number of persistent unresolved DSB, without alterations in the cell cycle progression. Long-term examination of chromosome aberrations revealed a strikingly high number of chromatid and chromosome exchanges. By using genetic and pharmacological abrogation of PARP-1, we demonstrated that alternative end-joining (alt-EJ) repair pathway is responsible for those chromosome abnormalities generated by limiting c-NHEJ activities during directed inhibition of DNA-PKcs in ATM-deficient cells. Targeting the non-oncogenic addiction to DNA-PKcs of ATM-defective tumors stimulates the DSB repair by alt-EJ, which is liable for the origin of cells carrying stable chromosome aberrations that may eventually restrict the therapeutic strategy.Fil: de Campos Nebel, Ildefonso Marcelo.     Predicting 6-Month Mortality in Incident Elderly Dialysis Patients: A Simple Prognostic Score

    Aim: Mortality in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) remains high, particularly among elderly, who represents the most rapidly growing segment of the ESRD population in wealthier countries. We developed and validated a risk score in elderly patients to predict 6-month mortality after dialysis initiation. Methods: We used data from a cohort of 421 patients, aged 65 years and over who started dialysis between 2009 and 2016, in our Nephrology department. The predictive score was developed using a multivariable logistic regression analysis. A bootstrapping technique was used for internal validation. Results: The overall mortality within 6 months was 14.0%. Five independent predictors were identified, and a points system was constructed: age 75 years or older (2 points), coronary artery disease (2), cerebrovascular disease with hemiplegia (2), time of nephrology care before dialysis (<3.0 months [2]; ≥3 to <12 months [1]), and serum albumin levels (3.0-3.49 g/dL [1]; <3.0 g/dL [2]). A score of 6 identified patients with a 70% risk of 6-month mortality. Model performance was good in both discrimination (area under the curve of 0.793; [95% CI 0.73-0.86]) and validation (concordance statistics of 0.791 [95% CI 0.73-0.85]). Conclusions: We developed a simple prediction score based on readily available clinical and laboratory data that can be a practical and useful tool to assess short-term prognosis in elderly patients starting dialysis.     Nesta comunicação apresentamos uma pesquisa desenvolvida com uma turma do ensino médio integrado de uma escola da rede federal de ensino da cidade de Manaus. O obetivo da pesquisa foi de avaliar qual o papal exercido pelos conhecimentos prévios para elaboração de hipóteses em questõs abertas no ensino de física. Constatamos que o conhecimento prévio é uma condição necessária mas não suficiente, pois possibilitou ao alunado formularem as hipóteses embora, em sua maioria, elas não estivessem adequadas ao que é posto pela física. Isto indica que o senso comum foi o conhecimento mais utilizado para formulá-las ao invés do conhecimento científico, como esperado

    El proceso de transformaciones socioeconómicas que se viene implementando en Cuba en los últimos años ha permitido la ampliación de actores económicos, resultando de gran relevancia el aumento acelerado del sector no estatal, concebido este como un actor clave para el desarrollo del paí­s. Estos cambios en las formas de empleo han venido acompañados de un conjunto de nuevas reglamentaciones, normativas que ha incidido en la emergencia de nuevas necesidades de información y aprendizaje en gran parte de la sociedad cubana relacionada al desarrollo de emprendimientos, teniendo en cuenta además el vertiginoso avance de las Tecnologí­as de la Información y las Comunicaciones (TIC), necesarias cada vez más para la gestión de los emprendimientos y favorecer el acceso a la información. El escenario actual demanda una contextualización de los servicios que ofrecen las bibliotecas públicas a fin de satisfacer las necesidades de información y de aprendizaje que emergen en las comunidades a partir de las oportunidades para el emprendimiento. Con este propósito se indagó en las necesidades de información y comportamiento informacional de mujeres emprendedoras residentes en comunidades con riesgo a la vulnerabilidad social, donde el proceso para el desarrollo de los emprendimientos supone disí­miles desventajas, en particular para las mujeres por su posición histórica en la división sexual del trabajo. A partir de los resultados recabados a través de encuestas y entrevistas en profundidad, se presenta un conjunto de propuestas para los servicios de las bibliotecas públicas en articulación con algunas instituciones de la comunidad, entre ellos los Joven Club de Computación y Electrónica, en aras de aprovechar las capacidades tecnológicas de estos últimos que a su vez implican nuevas formas de aprendizaje, al integrar el uso de las TIC para el desenvolvimiento de los emprendimientos, desde una perspectiva de equidad de género e inclusión social.
