Nonlocality of Majorana modes in hybrid nanowires
Spatial separation of Majorana zero modes distinguishes trivial from topological midgap states and is key to topological protection in quantum computing applications. Although signatures of Majorana zero modes in tunneling spectroscopy have been reported in numerous studies, a quantitative measure of the degree of separation, or nonlocality, of the emergent zero modes has not been reported. Here, we present results of an experimental study of nonlocality of emergent zero modes in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanowire devices. The approach takes advantage of recent theory showing that nonlocality can be measured from splitting due to hybridization of the zero mode in resonance with a quantum dot state at one end of the nanowire. From these splittings as well as anticrossing of the dot states, measured for even and odd occupied quantum dot states, we extract both the degree of nonlocality of the emergent zero mode, as well as the spin canting angles of the nonlocal zero mode. Depending on the device measured, we obtain either a moderate degree of nonlocality, suggesting a partially separated Andreev subgap state, or a highly nonlocal state consistent with a well-developed Majorana modeThis research was supported by Microsoft, the Danish National Research Foundation, the European Commission, and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through Grants No. FIS2015-65706-P, No. FIS2015-64654-P, and No. FIS2016-80434-P (AEI/FEDER, EU), the Ramón y Cajal programme Grant No. RYC-2011-09345, and the María de Maeztu Programme for Units of Excellence in R&D (Grant No. MDM-2014-0377). Expression Patterns Of Passiflora Edulis Apetala1/fruitfull Homologues Shed Light Onto Tendril And Corona Identities
Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Passiflora (passionflowers) makes an excellent model for studying plant evolutionary development. They are mostly perennial climbers that display axillary tendrils, which are believed to be modifications of the inflorescence. Passionflowers are also recognized by their unique flower features, such as the extra whorls of floral organs composed of corona filaments and membranes enclosing the nectary. Although some work on Passiflora organ ontogeny has been done, the developmental identity of both Passiflora tendrils and the corona is still controversial. Here, we combined ultrastructural analysis and expression patterns of the flower meristem and floral organ identity genes of the MADS-box AP1/FUL clade to reveal a possible role for these genes in the generation of evolutionary novelties in Passiflora. Results: We followed the development of structures arising from the axillary meristem from juvenile to adult phase in P.edulis. We further assessed the expression pattern of P.edulis AP1/FUL homologues (PeAP1 and PeFUL), by RT-qPCR and in situ hybridization in several tissues, correlating it with the developmental stages of P.edulis. PeAP1 is expressed only in the reproductive stage, and it is highly expressed in tendrils and in flower meristems from the onset of their development. PeAP1 is also expressed in sepals, petals and in corona filaments, suggesting a novel role for PeAP1 in floral organ diversification. PeFUL presented a broad expression pattern in both vegetative and reproductive tissues, and it is also expressed in fruits. Conclusions: Our results provide new molecular insights into the morphological diversity in the genus Passiflora. Here, we bring new evidence that tendrils are part of the Passiflora inflorescence. This points to the convergence of similar developmental processes involving the recruitment of genes related to flower identity in the origin of tendrils in different plant families. The data obtained also support the hypothesis that the corona filaments are likely sui generis floral organs. Additionally, we provide an indication that PeFUL acts as a coordinator of passionfruit development.8Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP, Sao Paulo, Brazil) [2015/18900-3]Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES, Brazil)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq, Brazil)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq
On the relationship between pump chirp and single-photon chirp in spontaneous parametric downconversion
We study the chronocyclic character, i.e. the joint temporal and spectral
properties, of the single-photon constituents of photon pairs generated by
spontaneous parametric down conversion. In particular we study how single
photon properties, including purity and single-photon chirp, depend on photon
pair properties, including the type of signal-idler spectral and correlations
and the level of pump chirp.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
Structure and Magnetization of Two-Dimensional Vortex Arrays in the Presence of Periodic Pinning
Ground-state properties of a two-dimensional system of superconducting
vortices in the presence of a periodic array of strong pinning centers are
studied analytically and numerically. The ground states of the vortex system at
different filling ratios are found using a simple geometric argument under the
assumption that the penetration depth is much smaller than the spacing of the
pin lattice. The results of this calculation are confirmed by numerical studies
in which simulated annealing is used to locate the ground states of the vortex
system. The zero-temperature equilibrium magnetization as a function of the
applied field is obtained by numerically calculating the energy of the ground
state for a large number of closely spaced filling ratios. The results show
interesting commensurability effects such as plateaus in the B-H diagram at
simple fractional filling ratios.Comment: 12 pages, 19 figures, submitted for publicatio
Observational evidence of the formation of cyanopolyynes in CRL618 through the polimerization of HCN
The abundance ratio of consecutive members of the cyanopolyynes family has
been explored in CRL618 using data acquired in a complete line survey covering
the frequency range 81-356 GHz. The Jup range explored for the different
molecules is the following: 1 to 4 for HCN and HNC, 9 to 39 for HC3N, 31 to 133
for HC5N, and 72 to 85 for HC7N (not detected beyond Jup=85). The lowest
vibrationally excited state of HC7N (nu_15 at 62 cm^-1) has been tentatively
detected. Data analysis has been performed by extending our previous
geometrical and radiative transfer model of the slowly expanding envelope (SEE)
surrounding the compact central continuum source of CRL 618, that was
established from the study of rotational lines in several vibrationally excited
states of HC_3N. The new lines analyzed here require to model the high velocity
wind (HVW) component and the colder circumstellar gas, remnant of the AGB phase
of CRL618. The derived HC3N/HC5N and HC5N/HC7N abundance ratios from this set
of uniformly calibrated lines are between 3 and 6 in the different regions,
similar to standard values in the CSM and ISM, and consistent with previous
estimates obtained from ISO observations and chemical models. However, the
abundance ratios of HC3N, HC5N and HC7N with respect to HCN are at least two
orders of magnitude larger than those typical for AGB C-rich stars, such as
IRC+10216. This fact indicates that, in the short transition toward the
Planetary Nebula phase, HCN is quickly reprocessed into longer cyanopolyyne
chains. A similar behavior was previously found in this object for the
polyacetylenic chains (C(2n)H2).Comment: 8 figures, accepted in ApJ main journa

Short-range charge-order in NiO perovskites (=Pr,Nd,Eu) probed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy
The short-range organization around Ni atoms in orthorhombic NiO
(=Pr,Nd,Eu) perovskites has been studied over a wide temperature range by Ni
K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate that two
different Ni sites, with different average Ni-O bond lengths, coexist in those
orthorhombic compounds and that important modifications in the Ni nearest
neighbors environment take place across the metal-insulator transition. We
report evidences for the existence of short-range charge-order in the
insulating state, as found in the monoclinic compounds. Moreover, our results
suggest that the two different Ni sites coexists even in the metallic state.
The coexistence of two different Ni sites, independently on the ion,
provides a common ground to describe these compounds and shed new light in the
understanding of the phonon-assisted conduction mechanism and unusual
antiferromagnetism present in all NiO compounds.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted PRB - Brief Report Dec.200
