Communication apprehension and maths anxiety as barriers to communication and numeracy skills development in accounting and business education

    Get PDF
Purpose – To establish the existence of barriers to communication and numeracy skills development and to establish the levels of these exhibited by accounting and business students at the commencement of their courses in higher education. Design/methodology/approach – Uses questionnaires to establish the levels of communication apprehension (CA) and maths anxiety (MA) in students at the commencement of their accounting and business courses in higher education. Establishes the underlying factors that are influential in determining the levels of apprehension and anxiety in individual students. An analysis of the underlying demographic variables such as age, previous educational background, etc. is also undertaken. Findings – Identifies the existence of high levels of CA in accounting students and MA in business studies students at the beginning of their courses. Practical implications – Where high levels of CA in accounting students and MA in business studies students are shown to exist consideration must be given to relevant curriculum design and delivery, and the use of techniques designed to reduce apprehension/anxiety in the students concerned. Because the apprehension/anxiety is present on entry to higher education it may be that specific courses appear to be recruiting students whose perception of their longer term vocational skills requirements may be inappropriate to their chosen career area. Originality/value – Identifies specific differences in the areas of CA and MA between differently focused vocational courses, which have syllabus overlap, within a business school. We have performed a systematic ESR study of the rare-earth ions Nd3+, Gd3+, Er3+ and Yb3+ on powdered samples of various intermetallic compouns of AB2 cubic structure, where B is a transition-metal ion belonging to the group VIII of the Periodic Table, and A is a nonmagnetic ion. We were able to show a correlation between the observed g shifts and the position of the B ion in the Periodic Table. This variation is explained qualitatively using a simple multiband model, as well as band-structure arguments. The hyperfine constants for the 143Nd isotopes were found smaller in magnitude with respect to the value in insulators; this effect is attributed to s-electron self-polarization due to the Nd localized - moment - s-electron exchange coupling. The change of the resonance properties of the ground state of Nd3+ in the type II superconductors Ce Ru2, Th Ru2 and La Ru2 upon going from the normal state to the superconducting state are reported, and the data is discussed in terms of conduction electron¿s pairing mechanism and inhomogeneous field distribution mechanism in the superconducting state. A lattice-constant study of the cubic Ce(Irx Os1-x)2 and Ce(Ptx Ir 1-x)2 mixtures reveals anomalous lattice constant versus x behavior. Also the ESR thermal broadening and g-shift of Nd3+ in these compounds are anomalous but could be correlated with the lattice parameters. This is taken as evidence for intermediate-valence state in some of the mixturesDoutoradoFísicaDoutor em Ciência

Arte e “identidad”: Taxonomía de las transformaciones

    Get PDF
[ABSTRACT]This device is entrusted to a web, which is articulated and unfolds via a PDF with Hyperlinks to a Web site which houses videos that depend upon it. These videos are a composition of images in movement, static images and texts that I have been compiling in a large digital archive. The interest of this archive is to be able to create video panels* which, as well as depending on the Web site, can also be presented in multichannel video projections. The video panels make up a rhizome, a “taxonomy” that materialises in five categories – also interlinked – regarding transformations of the subject: transgender, hybridization, metamorphosis, mimicry and becoming. These categories are “divided” in an unfathomable, rhizomatic classification, changeable and without conclusion, with no final synthesis. Thus I have felt it necessary to approach the most relevant classification models of modernity

    Studies for Type-I, type-II and Type-III Intermittencies.

There are several topics in fluid mechanics where the intermittency phenomenon appears, such as in Lorenz systems, Rayleigh-Bénard convection, DNLS equation and turbulence. The correct evaluation of the intermittency phenomenon contributes to a better prediction and a proper description of these topics. We summarized here a new method we have recently proposed to evaluate the reinjection probability function for type-II and type-III intermittencies. The new reinjection probability density (RPD) has been observed in the broad class of maps, as we have checked by both numerical simulations and analytical studies. For type-II and type-III intermittencies, we presented a new one-parameter family of functions describing the reinjection probability, being the usual type-II uniform reinjection probability a particular case of our RPD. For the type-III case, a new two-parameter family of RPD has been found from which one can derive the lower bound of reinjection (LBR). By extending the preceding analysis of type-II and type-III intermittencies, we give here a new RPD for the type-I case, from which we also derive the densities of the laminar phase lengths and the new characteristic relations

Stability analysis for dusty plasma under grain charge fluctuations due to non-Maxwellian electron distributions

    Get PDF
The most relevant characteristic of a complex plasma is the dust charge as well as the dust charging process itself which controls different collective and individual behaviors of the plasma. The dust charging has been exhaustively studied providing several theoretical approaches that have improved the early Orbital Motion Limited (OML) description [1, 2]. The OML is considered as a suitable model and, at least, it provides a certain perspective of the main plasma parameters involved in the charging processes. Recent works have stressed the importance of the electron and ion velocity distribution functions in addressing the description of plasma stability analysis under the frame of plasma fluid description, including dust charge fluctuations. The consideration of non-Maxwellian distribution functions has been proved to induce plasma departures from the usual Maxwellian equilibrium, specially under the development of intense electric fields that can accelerate charges till superthermal velocities [3]. In these cases, the distribution function tails fit well to a power-law dependence even for electrons. In this communication, we devote attention to the effect of non Maxwellian electron distribution functions on the collective plasma behavior through a linear analysis of perturbed fluid equations. The stability of a partially ionized complex plasma with a non Maxwellian electron population is studied by including this feature on the dust charge fluctuation for infinite and finite dust grain mass

A Voxelized Fractal Descriptor for 3D Object Recognition

Currently, state-of-the-art methods for 3D object recognition rely in a deep learning-pipeline. Nonetheless, these methods require a large amount of data that is not easy to obtain. In addition to that, the majority of them exploit features of the datasets, like the fact of being CAD models to create rendered representation which will not work in real life because the 3D sensors provide point clouds. We propose a novel global descriptor for point clouds which takes advantage of the fractal dimension of the objects. Our approach introduces many benefits, such as being agnostic to the density of points of the sample, number of points in the input cloud, sensor of choice, and noise up to a level, and it works on real life point cloud data provided by commercial sensors. We tested our descriptor for 3D object recognition using ModelNet, which is a well-known dataset for that task. Our approach achieves 92.84% accuracy on the ModelNet10, and 88.74% accuracy on the ModelNet40.This work was supported in part by the Spanish Government, with Feder funds, under Grant PID2019-104818RB-I00, and in part by the Spanish Grants for Ph.D. studies under Grant ACIF/2017/243 and Grant FPU16/00887

Factors related to gender cyber-victimization in social networks among Spanish youth

The goal of this study was to identify factors associated with gender cyber-victimization in social networks: technological factors (participants’ use of virtual environments and digital competences), cognitive factors (participants’ concept of gender cyber-violence and perception of risk in online activities) and behavioural factors (participants’ responses to cyber-violence). This is a innovatory approach to measuring the phenomenon (identifying predictive factors), since previous studies have measured generalised cyber-violence through types of conduct found in the internet, the sex differences or studies focused in the sphere of partner relationships. The study was carried out with a sample of 4,536 adolescents aged from 12 to 14, all in compulsory secondary education in six different regions of Spain. An instrument consisting of different scales, was applied, and the data were analysed using descriptive, predictive and classifying techniques. The variables identified as predictors, in the regression analysis and as characterizers of cyber-victims in the clusters are: wider and more intensive use of social networks; more proactive responses to cyber-violence; lower competences in digital self-protection; a more limited concept of gender cyber-violence; and less awareness of risk in some online behaviours. These results suggest a need to intervene in education in order to minimize the risks revealed.

In this work we present a general description of the physics of the violin. We examine the concepts which provide the physical support and reveal the richness and the pedagogical potential of the subject. We remark the contributions of physicists such as Helmholtz, Savart, Raman and Saunders to the undesrtanding of the way in which a bowed string vibrates, and the comprehension of the acoustical properties of the instrument. The role of each component of the violin is described in details. We also discuss the importance of the bridge, the plates and the body normal modes of vibration for the acoustical response of the instrument. The air-resonance of the enclosed air in the violin body (Helmholtz resonance) is disscussed using the equivalent fomalism between mechanical, electrical and acoustic oscillating systems. The production of the characteristic sound of the violin, which results from the vibrational waveform of a bowed string, is also described
