Agricultural intensification in fragile arid and semiarid environments has led to an increase in soil degradation, mainly through wind erosion. Argentina is an agricultural and cattle-farming country, which has increased its productivity in the last few decades, widening the boundaries of farm land and the use of herbicides to control weeds. Glyphosate, which accounts for 65% of the Argentinian pesticides market, is strongly retained in soil. The World Health Organization concluded that there was evidence to classify glyphosate as ‘probably carcinogenic to humans.’ In this context, the objective of this study was to determine the presence and concentration of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in wind-blown material in 3 areas in Argentine semiarid regions (Chaco, La Pampa, and San Luis). In 1-ha2 plots, left uncovered and levelled, the wind-blown material was collected at heights of 13.5, 50, and 150 cm during 18 erosion events. The wind-blown material carried by the wind at a height of 150 cm had concentrations of 247 and 218 μg kg−1 of glyphosate and AMPA, respectively. This material was enriched 60 times in glyphosate and 3 times in AMPA as compared with the original soil. This shows that the eroded material can, potentially, have a negative impact on the ecosystem and also on human health, depending on the proportion of this material released into the atmosphere in suspension as particulate matter. This study is, to our knowledge, the first to report concentrations of glyphosate and AMPA in wind-blown material under field conditions.Fil: Aparicio, Virginia Carolina. I want out of the labels : how Chuck Palahniuk\u27s characters challenge the dominant discourse

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to explore postmodern identity in the work of Chuck Palahniuk. The characters within Palahniuk\u27s text Invisible Monsters realize the manner in which identity is a construct, and their response is to oppose and redefine it. In my research, I looked at how postmodern identity is defined by some of the leading critical thinkers in the field, and then I applied their thought to Palahniuk\u27s characters. I showed how these characters come to understand the process by which society defines them, and with that realization, they oppose its totalizing definitions. The characters deconstruct the natural attitudes society has towards identity, and they reveal that it is in some way possible to create a unique identity that is not easily definable by the ruling discourse. I concluded that his attention to identity highlights Palahniuk\u27s concern for the place, identity, and influence of his generation

Mice infected with mouse hepatitis virus A59 (MHV-A59), an enveloped, positive-strand RNA Co-ronavirus, induce hepatitis, thymus involution, IgG2a-restricted hypergammaglobulinaemia, transaminase release and autoantibodies (autoAb) to liver and kidney fumarylacetoacetate hy-drolase (FAH). Since Toll-like receptors (TLR) play a central role in innate immunity, we explored the effects of TLR3, 7 and 9 stimulation on MHV mouse infection. Thus, the animals were treated with Poly (I:C), Loxoribine and CpG, the respective TLR ligands. MHV-infected mice inoculated with Poly (I:C) had significant lower levels of plasma transaminases and Ig, anti-MHV Ab, and uric acid than MHV-infected animals, whereas autoAb to kidney tissue were observed. Loxoribine only produced a slight decrease of uric acid levels and serum Ig. CpG showed deleterious effects on MHV-infected mice, since survival of animals dramatically dropped to about 10%. AutoAb to murine tissues and uric acid release were not affected, whereas transaminases and anti-MHV Ab were slightly elevated. Besides, CpG administration produced a decrease of the high levels of serum Ig induced by the virus. Therefore, results indicated that TLR3 stimulation appeared to protect the animals against the viral infection, whereas CpG aggravated its signs. Loxoribine, the TLR7 ligand, did not show major effects.Fil: Aparicio, Jose Luis. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Oficina de Coordinación Administrativa Houssay. A Parallel Application of Matheuristics in Data Envelopment Analysis

    Get PDF
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a non-parametric methodology for estimating technical efficiency and benchmarking. In general, it is desirable that DEA generates the efficient closest targets as benchmarks for each assessed unit. This may be achieved through the application of the Principle of Least Action. However, the mathematical models associated with this principle are based fundamentally on combinatorial NP-hard problems, difficult to be solved. For this reason, this paper uses a parallel matheuristic algorithm, where metaheuristics and exact methods work together to find optimal solutions. Several parallel schemes are used in the algorithm, being possible for them to be configured at different stages of the algorithm. The main intention is to divide the number of problems to be evaluated in equal groups, so that they are resolved in different threads. The DEA problems to be evaluated in this paper are independent of each other, an indispensable requirement for this algorithm. In addition, taking into account that the main algorithm uses exact methods to solve the mathematical problems, different optimization software has been evaluated to compare their performance when executed in parallel. The method is competitive with exact methods, obtaining fitness close to the optimum with low computational time.J. Aparicio and M.
