Control and eradication strategies for brucella melitensis infection in sheep and goats

Aim: To describe the various strategies for the control and eradication of B. melitensis infection in sheep and goats. Methods: The advantages and drawbacks of these strategies are discussed on the basis of the author’s personal experience and a revision of the relevant literature. Results: Vaccination programmes in various combinations can be applied either to decrease the prevalence of infection in the animal population or, when combined with adequate complementary eradication measures, to achieve a brucellosis-free status. Conclusion: Controlling the disease should be the primary goal of the veterinary services involved. However, eradication should be the final objective of any control programme implemented. The selection of an eradication or control strategy is of paramount relevance, and a frequent cause of controversy among decision-makers. The final strategy should be established according to the quality of the veterinary services organisation, the economic resources available and the extent and prevalence of disease. Cooperation with farmers is essential to succeed with the application of even the most elementary control programme. When brucellosis is highly prevalent, mass (wholeflock) vaccination is the choice to control the disease, independently of the socioeconomic situation. Once effective control of the disease has been accomplished, its eradication is feasible. For successful eradication, the adequate quality and organisation of veterinary services, the strict control of animal movements and the provision of adequate economic compensation to affected farmers are compulsory. When the disease is fully eradicated, a surveillance strategy has to be implemented for the early detection of eventual new outbreaks or disease reintroductio

The concept of the «feminization of poverty» means that poverty largely affects women. Nevertheless, this «feminization» is not reflected in conventional measurements of poverty and, even when it is quantified, one of the fundamental elements for explaining this «feminization» is not taken into account: namely, the position of women in the social structure and their structural vulnerability. That is to say, the gender perspective

PBO Fibres: from saliling design towards architectural performance

    p. 3013-3023PBO fibres, also called "high-performance" polymer fibres, are a group of materials known as "rigid rods". Through this work it is pretended to make some considerations about the use of these new generation fibres. Poly (p-phenylene-2.6-benzobisoxazole)(PBO) is rigid-rod isotropic crystal polymer. PBO fibre is a high performance fibre developed by TOYOBO (Japan) PBO fibre is quite flexible and has very soft handling, in spite of its extremely high mechanical properties. Over the past ten years Future Fibres Company has pioneered the use of PBO for yacht rigging and has proven it to provide remarkable performance and longevity. Their method of producing these PBO cables delivers the lightest, smallest cables available on the market today. The PBO cable is formed by combining the incredible properties of PBO (poly(p-phenylene-2,6- benzobisoxazole)) fibre with the simple yet undeniably reliable process of continuous winding. A PBO cable is dry fibre tightly compacted and does not rely on a resin matrix that, if impacted, can be compromised. The cover of the cable is a vital component and whilst PBO is an excellent material for yacht rigging purposes, due to its extreme strength, low elongation and general robustness it must be protected from sunlight and seawater. Future Fibres has perfected its cover design that comprises a consolidating film, environmental protection layer and a customizable braided cover that can be tailored to suit any specific application. PBO has great potential to be used in construction or rehabilitation applications. At the same time the fibres, following further testing, would open up several design opportunities for high quality architectural projects.Gough, CE.; Pobo Blasco, M.; Ruiz Checa, JR. (2009).

The use of ICTs to enrich CLIL courses and materials

New technologies are having an increasingly important role in the teaching and learning of languages. They are a useful tool in the CLIL classroom, since they help students to understand content which is taught in a foreign language. This dissertation aims to explore the benefits of ICTs in CLIL and how CLIL teaching and materials could be improved and enriched by using them. An interview with a teacher was carried out. From the answers given, a webpage with several online resources and activities was created. The proposal was implemented and results were drawn. ICTs were shown to help students understand the content, and online games and videos were preferred over the rest of materials. However, only 54 % of the participants used ICTs to revise and study the subject, and 87% assured they would use the webpage section with additional materials. Future studies should consider whether students are really encouraged to use ICTs to complement classroom materials since it has been shown they play a fundamental role in the teaching and learning of languages
