Female labour supply and income taxation in Spain: The importance of behavioural assumptions and unobserved heterogeneity specification

    Get PDF
We estimate four models of female labour supply using a Spanish sample of married women from 1994, taking into account the complete form of the individual’s budget set. The models differ in the hypotheses relating to the presence of optimisation errors and/or the way non-workers contribute to the likelihood function. According to the results, the effects of wages and non-labour income on the labour supply of Spanish married women depend on the specification used. The model which has both preference and optimisation errors and allows for both voluntarily and involuntarily unemployed females desiring to participate seems to better fit the evidence for Spanish married women. Classification-JEL : J22labour supply, optimization errors, budget set.

Habitus clivé. Time in the theory of habitus in Pierre Bourdieu

[Abstract] The article presents and discusses the problem of time in the theory of habitus in Pierre Bourdieu. To do that we call on the concept of habitus clivé where the sociologist develops the possibilities of contradiction, the division of an habitus. We display the main concepts of the theoretical system of Bourdieu to explain how he conceives the possibilities of instability and dynamism of the habitus and its interaction with its field of performance.

Highly-complex optical signal generation using electro-optical systems with non-linear, non-invertible transmission functions

We present a scheme whereby a static non-linear, non-invertible transmission function performed by the electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulator produces highly complex optical chaos. The scheme allows the deterministic transformation of low-dimensional band-limited chaotic signals into much higher-dimensional structures with broadband spectra and without using any delay elements or feedback. Standard benchmark tests show that all the considered complexity indices are highly increased due to this transformation in a controlled fashion. This mechanism allows the design of simple optoelectronic delayed oscillators with extremely complex chaotic output.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Applied Physics Letters (August 2012

Essays on Monetary Theory and Policy

This dissertation consists of two essays concerning Monetary Theory and Policy. Essay 1, Monetary Policy and Asset Prices , develops a dynamic model in which money and a financial asset compete as media of exchange. We show that money circulates if and only if real assets are scarce, in the sense that their supply is not sufficient to satisfy the demand for liquidity. Our model also generates a connection between asset prices and monetary policy. When money grows at a higher rate, inflation is higher and the return on money decreases. In equilibrium, no arbitrage amounts to equating the real return of both objects. Thus, the price of the asset increases in order to lower its real return. Essay 2, Monetary Policy and Interest Rates with Collateralized Borrowing , proposes a model of money that analyzes collateral and its interaction with monetary policy and interest rates. The value of the asset that serves as collateral, which is specific to each agent, plays a crucial role. This asset is different from fiat money and a standard financial asset. Therefore, its valuation is not standard. I prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium in an environment where the Mundell-Tobin effect is not present. Heterogeneity of borrowers has a relevant effect on the impact of changes in the interest rates

    Get PDF

During the sixteenth century the Spanish Crown carried out an intense campaign to reduce the indigenous population in the New Kingdom of Granada, with the Catholic Church as the center of concentration and the axis of religious activities. I propose to examine the urban and architectural theoretical bases to construct a genealogy of ideas. In the New Kingdom of Granada, I will present the nucleation project initiated by Oidor Luis Henríquez at the end of the 16th century, as well as his predecessors. Then, I'll explore two sets of European sources, urban and architectural, showing the possible genealogies: The “Ordenanzas de población” of Philip II issued in 1573; and the “Instrucciones para la fabrica de la iglesia” of Borromeo, published in 1577. Both treaties were linked with the Franciscan community until the Late Middle Ages with the works of the Catalan Francesc Eiximenic and the French Guillermo Durandus

The impact of secondary information sources on the formation of the tourist image : the case of rural tourism in Galicia

    Get PDF
In a context of intense competition among tourist destinations, the perceived image is key and plays, in turn, a key role in the choice of destination, as the values associated to it represent a decisive factor in the purchase decision process by potential tourists. In this context, many researchers agree that the image is usually formed by two main forces: stimulus or external factors and internal personal factors. The former refer to the number and nature of sources of information to which individuals are exposed. The latter include motivations, demographic characteristics and the geographical and cultural background of tourists. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to identify the set of cognitive‑affective components forming the a priori perceived image of the destination and, moreover, the study of the main factors influencing stimulus formation. In particular, we analyze the effects of secondary sources of information (autonomous, organic and induced) on the perceived destination image
