The organizational design of nonprofits for people with disabilities

Utilizando información obtenida de los directivos de 105 pequeñas organizaciones sin fines de lucro españolas que, en el año 2007, se dedicaban a la prestación de servicios a personas con discapacidad, hemos analizado como el diseño organizativo –en concreto, los sistemas de recompensas extrínsecas e intrínsecas- influye sobre la delegación, la motivación y la transferencia de conocimiento a la hora de lograr el objetivo de la organización consistente en mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas que viven con una discapacidad. Los resultados muestran que, debido a la carencia de conocimiento técnico, los directivos de estas entidades no lucrativas (ENL) deben delegar derechos de decisión en empleados cualificados y utilizar en mayor medida recompensas intrínsecas y extrínsecas para motivar a los empleados a que transmitan conocimiento entre ellos eficientemente.We use data obtained from managers of 105 small nonprofit organizations (NPOs) providing services to people with disabilities in Spain in 2007 to examine how organizational design—particularly, extrinsic and intrinsic reward systems—impacts delegation, motivation, and knowledge transfer to achieve the NPO’s goal to improve the lives of persons living with disabilities. We find that, due to lack of technical knowledge, managers of these NPOs must delegate decision rights to qualified employees and that they successfully use a higher degree of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards to motivate employees to transfer knowledge among themselves efficiently

Un viaje en el tiempo por la alfabetización científica en España

En los últimos años, la enseñanza de las ciencias se ha encaminado hacia un enfoque integrado de los saberes y sus aplicaciones en la vida cotidiana que se ha denominado STE(A)M (del inglés Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar la evolución histórica de la enseñanza de las ciencias en España, a través de los manuales escolares del fondo bibliográfico del Centro de Documentación Infantil y Juvenil, Museo Pedagógico, de la Biblioteca de la Facultad de Formación de Profesorado y Educación de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid que se datan hasta de finales del s. XIX. Los resultados de nuestro estudio demuestran que, en la educación científica en España, existe una tendencia histórica hacia la integración de las ciencias con la vida real hasta 1935, aunque sin alcanzar enfoques STE(A)MThe teaching of science recently has been focused towards an integrated approach to knowledge and its applications in everyday life that has been called STE(A)M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). La transformación de una docente y el aula a través de una experiencia centrada en la socialización

El sistema escolar reclama una nueva forma de entender la formación del profesorado y la educación del alumnado. De este modo, el enfoque de la socialización se plantea como una de las aspiraciones a desarrollar en los centros y en el aula. El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar una experiencia educativa de aprendizaje cooperativo en un aula de una escuela rural, desarrollada en el área de Educación Física. Al mismo tiempo, se considera la transformación de una maestra que ejercía como aprendiz en esta metodología; se contó también con la ayuda de investigadores para el análisis de las experiencias, las reflexiones sobre lo ocurrido, y la reconsideración del proceso en general. Los resultados muestran que las relaciones acontecidas en las reuniones, y las del alumnado en el aula, constituyeron un aprendizaje valioso que posibilitó la adquisición de nuevas competencias que profundizan en un conocimiento sólido, generan lazos de motivación y aportan respuestas a los problemas educativos.The school system claims for a new way of understanding the teachers training process and school education. In this context, socialization is seen as one of the aspirations that we can develop in schools and classrooms. The aim of this research was to analyze an educational experience of cooperative learning approach developed in a classroom/group of a school located in a rural area, in the area of Physical Education. At the same time, we also assessed the transformation of the teacher, a women who assumed the role of apprentice in this methodology; we had the support of researchers for the analysis of what was going on, reflections upon the experiences and reconsideracion of the process. Results show that the relations that took place in the meetings, and those among students in the classroom, constituted a significant learning of valuable competences that lay the foundations for a solid knowledge, promoted strong motivational links and gave answers to educational problems

Appressorium formation in the corn smut fungus Ustilago maydis requires a G2 cell cycle arrest

Many of the most important plant diseases are caused by fungal pathogens that form specialized cell structures to breach the leaf surface as well as to proliferate inside the plant. To initiate pathogenic development, the fungus responds to a set of inductive cues. Some of them are of extracellular nature (environmental signals) while others respond to intracellular conditions (developmental signals). These signals have to be integrated into a single response that has as a major outcome changes in the morphogenesis of the fungus. The cell cycle regulation is pivotal during these cellular differentiations, and we hypothesized that cell cycle regulation would be likely to provide control points for infection development by fungal pathogens. Although efforts have been done in various fungal systems, there is still limited information available regarding the relationship of these processes with the induction of the virulence programs. Hence, the role of fungal cell cycle regulators -which are wide conserved elements- as true virulence factors, has yet to be defined. Here we discuss the recent finding that the formation of the appressorium, a structure required for plant penetration, in the corn smut fungus Ustilago maydis seems to be incompatible with an active cell cycle and, therefore genetic circuits evolved in this fungus to arrest the cell cycle during the growth of this fungus on plant surface, before the appressorium-mediated penetration into the plant tissue.Peer Reviewe

Cuidad histórica, ciudad actual : una dualidad a respetar

Nuestros Centros históricos son una amalgama de trazas urbanas y construcciones resultado del devenir del tiempo, respuesta material que en cada momento histórico fueron dando a sus necesidades los pobladores que allí habitaron; lo que los convierte en los documentos más valiosos para la investigación y conocimiento de sus procesos evolutivos, tanto técnicos como sociológicos. Pero sobre todo, y ante todo, forman parte de nuestras ciudades de hoy en día, debiendo aprender a adaptarse y convivir con la época actual, como ya lo hicieron en épocas pretéritas, pero sabiendo exigir su derecho a ser conservados y respetados los valores que representan. Plantearnos ?La ciudad necesaria, la ciudad posible?, es saber asumir el aquí y ahora sin renunciar a nuestro pasado; es saber integrar lo que fuimos y lo que vamos siendo, en el fluir constante de la vida; es saber dar respuesta a las necesidades de hoy sin desfigurar nuestros Centros Históricos; es en definitiva entender la cultura como concepto y no solo como suma de manifestaciones materiales y/o inmateriales. El urbanismo es una valiosísima herramienta con que afrontar la dualidad de nuestras ciudades, histórica y actual, pero hay que liberarlo de toda carga ideológica a fin de no convertirla en instrumento al servicio de la especulación o de creación de espacios organicistas que dirigen y manipulan la normal convivencia social. El urbanismo ha de estar al servicio de nuestras ciudades, de sus ciudadanos; no al contrario, en el que el urbanismo se convierte en un fin, con formato de ejercicio intelectual llevado a escala real. Es difícil encontrar el equilibrio entre el mantenimiento de los testimonios del pasado y la exigible calidad de vida de la sociedad actual que habita en los espacios que aquellos configuran; pero es la meta irrenunciable, si no queremos dejar dichos espacios languidecer, convirtiéndolos en museos o parques temáticos, lo cual es perder el mejor testimonio que nos ofrecen, el de contenedores de vida, de sensaciones; ser testigos vivos de nuestra historia

Chemical distribution of HII regions towards the Galactic anticentre

We study the physical and chemical properties of a sample of HII regions located at RG >11 kpc and present the radial distribution of abundances towards the Galaxy anticentre. We carried out optical spectroscopic observations of nine HII regions with the WHT. The sample was increased by searching the literature for optical observations of regions towards the Galactic anticentre, re-analysing them to obtain a single sample of 23 objects covering the Galactocentric radius from 11 kpc to 18 kpc to be processed in a homogeneous and consistent manner. Accurate electron densities and temperatures of several ionic species were derived in 13 HII regions. These physical parameters were applied to the spectra to determine direct total chemical abundances. For those regions without direct estimations of temperature, chemical abundances were derived by performing tailor-made photoionisation models and/or by using an empirical relation obtained from radio recombination and optical temperatures. We performed weighted least-squares fits to the distribution of the derived abundances along the Galactocentric distances to study the radial gradients of metallicity. The distributions O/H, N/H, S/H, and Ar/H towards the anticentre can be represented by decreasing linear radial gradients, while in the case of N/O abundances the radial distribution is better fitted with a two-zone model. The He/H radial gradient is presented here for the first time; we find a slope that is not significantly different from zero. The derived gradient for oxygen shows a clear decrease with distance with a slope of -0.053dex/kpc. Although a shallower slope at large Galactocentric distances is suggested by our data, the flattening of the distribution cannot be confirmed and more objects towards the anticentre need to be studied in order to establish the true form of the metallicity gradient.Comment: Accepted for publication in Section 5. Compound orbits break-up in constituents: an algorithm

In this paper decomposition of periodic orbits in bifurcation diagrams are derived in unidimensional dynamics system $x_{n+1}=f(x_{n};r)$, being $f$ an unimodal function. We proof a theorem which states the necessary and sufficient conditions for the break-up of compound orbits in their simpler constituents. A corollary to this theorem provides an algorithm for the computation of those orbits. This process closes the theoretical framework initiated in (Physica D, 239:1135--1146, 2010)
