Notas para la historia del castellano "rumor"

    Get PDF
Does not seem that the castellana voice "rumor" has a particular task on its etymology. It is a word that is known in his biography: latinism documented since the fifteenth century. It has, however, a more eventful history that linguists and philologists have believed.notPeerReviewe

GEOGRAPHICAL VARIABILITY IN THE AMOUNT OF BIGEYE CAUGHT UNDER FADS BY PURSE SEINERS IN THE EASTERN ATLANTIC: FROM THE MULTISPECIES SAMPLES AND THE ICCAT STATISTICS

This paper analyses the geographical distribution of bigeye FAD catches by PS using results of multispecies sampling of EU FAD catches (1991-2016). This analysis shows marked geographical gradients in the geographical distribution of bigeye catches, catches being rare in coastal areas and increasingly abundant at increasing distances from the shore. Opposite changes are observed for yellowfin abundance, while skipjack abundance tends to be similar in most areas. Yearly trends in relative abundances of bigeye and skipjack are also observed. These observed species compositions are widely in contradiction with the species composition of Task II data. This statistical problem in the bigeye geographical distribution is a source of errors in the choice and analysis of FAD moratoria. It is also a source of potential error in the Task 1 bigeye catches. Based on fine scale sampled catches, bigeye catches by the Ghanaian fleet could be widely overestimated today because of its improper data processing. Our study makes the recommendation that improved Task II statistics should be prepared for the EU&al PS and for the Ghanaian fleet before the bigeye stock assessment

La relación entre los manuscritos 10 202 y 10 203 de la BNE, del "Árbol de las batallas"

The relationship between two manuscripts from the National Library of Spain which include the translation that Antón Zorita did by commission from the first Marquis of Santillana is examined. There are clear evidences that one of the manuscripts, which is supposed to be the final version, is directly based in the other.

Preoperational Doppler-radar mesoscale wind structure detection algorithm: application to Spanish Mediterranean cases

Póster presentado en: 11th Plinius Conference on Mediterranean Storms celebrado en Barcelona del 7 al 11 de septiembre de 2009.Doppler radar information is used to identify features related to the radial wind field and signals such as mesovortex and other mesoscale wind structures. Automation of some processes can improve the forecasters’ ability to issue early warnings for hazardous convective events

Optical determination of three-dimensional nanotrack profiles generated by single swift-heavy ion impacts in lithium niobate

    Get PDF
Three-dimensional (3D) profiles of single nanotracks generated by a low impact density of Cl ions at 46 MeV have been determined by optical methods, using an effective-medium approach. The buried location of the maximum stopping power induces a surface optical waveguiding layer even at ultralow fluences (1011-1013 at./cm2) that allows to obtain the effective refractive index profiles (from dark-mode measurements). Combining the optical information with Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy/channeling experiments, the existence of a surrounding defective halo around the amorphous track core has been ascertained. The 3D profile of the halo has also been determined. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewe

Two-state theory of nonlinear Stochastic Resonance

    Get PDF
An amenable, analytical two-state description of the nonlinear population dynamics of a noisy bistable system driven by a rectangular subthreshold signal is put forward. Explicit expressions for the driven population dynamics, the correlation function (its coherent and incoherent part), the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the Stochastic Resonance (SR) gain are obtained. Within a suitably chosen range of parameter values this reduced description yields anomalous SR-gains exceeding unity and, simultaneously, gives rise to a non-monotonic behavior of the SNR vs. the noise strength. The analytical results agree well with those obtained from numerical solutions of the Langevin equation.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Epistasis between cultural traits causes paradigm shifts in cultural evolution

    Get PDF
Every now and then the cultural paradigm of a society changes. While current models of cultural shifts usually require a major exogenous or endogenous change, we propose that the mechanism underlying many paradigm shifts may just be an emergent feature of the inherent congruence among different cultural traits. We implement this idea through a population dynamics model in which individuals are defined by a vector of cultural traits that changes mainly through cultural contagion, biased by a 'cultural fitness' landscape, between contemporary individuals. Cultural traits reinforce or hinder each other (through a form of cultural epistasis) to prevent cognitive dissonance. Our main result is that abrupt paradigm shifts occur, in response to weak changes in the landscape, only in the presence of epistasis between cultural traits, and regardless of whether horizontal transmission is biased by homophily. A relevant consequence of this dynamics is the irreversible nature of paradigm shifts: the old paradigm cannot be restored even if the external changes are undone. Our model puts the phenomenon of paradigm shifts in cultural evolution in the same category as catastrophic shifts in ecology or phase transitions in physics, where minute causes lead to major collective changes. This work was supported by the Spanish projects VARIANCE (FIS2015-64349-P, MINECO/FEDER, UE), BASIC (FIS2018-098186-B-100, MICINN/FEDER, UE), MiMevo (FIS2017-89773-P, MINECO/FEDER, UE) and SEV-2013-0347 (MINECO).Publicad
