    Breve história socioeconómica de Faro

    Get PDF

This paper looks at Terry Eagleton’s engagement with Freudian psychoanalysis. We start by looking at Eagleton’s increasing interest in psychoanalysis in the late 1970s, particularly in “Marx, Freud and Morality” (1977). We then move on to three crucial topics that Eagleton tackles by resorting to psychoanalysis: work, love and reason. In each of these three cases we present the ways in which Eagleton posits psychoanalysis as a plausible complement to Marxism, even where their compatibility is not immediately evident. Our reading is intended to be descriptive; however, it does not shy away from pointing out the inconsistencies that we have found in Eagleton’s use and assessment of psychoanalysis. In the case of work, we address the relevance of Freud’s view of it as inherently unpleasant in connection with the Marxian concept of alienated labour. Regarding love, we discuss Eagleton’s focus on love understood as agape rather than on the Freudian conception of love as eros. As far as reason is concerned, we deal with Freud’s faith in the intellect and in science as the sole safeguards of humankind against the assaults of the superego. Departing from the analysis of an historical phenomenon which we take as an archetype of that which we intend to study, we draw in the present investigation the contours of a conceptual field in which tourism, culture and education intersect. Therefore, one of the general objectives of our investigation is to create a portrait of cultural practices in the context of tourism and heritage, as well as the way in which these practices constitute specific modes of adult education. By integrating the idea of heritage in the wider context of culture and recentring the latter on the profoundly operative notion of meaning we build a conceptual bridge between these two fields and education, by us specifically understood as the deployment, creation, increment and transformation of meaning. The renewed awareness of the importance of education to adults is thus firmly anchored in their need, both as sociological actors and politically active individuals, to continually signify themselves in relation to the world. Physical instances of heritage are thus analysed as symbolic markers which are potentially usable, in an interpretative logic, as resources for meaningful construction by adults in processes of education. We thus embrace a paradigm which aims at reflecting on education from a holistic and emancipatory perspective transcending, at the level of educational discourse, narrow oppositions between preparation for labour and cultural enjoyment as well as between educative formality and informality, placing the learner’s experience at the centre of the equation. Adopting a radically qualitative approach we complete, with the voice of the actors, the theoretical path we took

Football club’s products and sporting events consumption has been extensively researched in the past. Games assistance, club association fees and merchandising purchase are among the forms of sports consumption that may occur. The drivers and motivations of such consumption are the basis of this research project. In the post-modern era, symbolic and hedonic consumption theories contribute to explain some sports consumption patterns. However, a special focus will be given to the tribal approach that has been recently discussed. By means of an exploratory research, the drivers and motivations of fan consumer behavior were analyzed, investigating in particular if the tribal approach can help to gain understanding of professional football consumption reality. An ethnographic study was conducted to answer the research questions. Data was collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews and desk research. Results suggest that “Sporting Clube de Portugal” football fans may be interpreted as a tribe which gathers around a club that functions as a sacred totem to the supporters. The club’s products consumption can be partly explained by the linking value of the products, that is, the affective connection to the tribe. The research also suggests that fans cannot be treated as a whole. In fact, significant differences emerge in their behaviors and forms of expression

Genetic diversity and population structure of the rockpool shrimp "Palaemon elegans" based on microsatellites: evidence for a cryptic species and differentiation across the Atlantic–Mediterranean transition

    Get PDF
[Abstract] The rockpool shrimp Palaemon elegans is an ecologically important crustacean species within the European coastline fauna. In the present study, genetic diversity and population structure and connectivity were assessed by examining 21 polymorphic microsatellite loci at 13 sampling sites located along the natural distribution range. All localities showed similar levels of genetic variability. Significant deficits of heterozygosity were recorded, most likely due to the presence of null alleles. Genetic structure analyses revealed two clearly genetically distinct groups within P. elegans but without following any geographical or oceanographic basis. Thus, our results provided nuclear evidence for the existence of a Mediterranean cryptic species within P. elegans, highlighting the need to revise its taxonomic status. Regarding P. elegans sensu stricto, population structuring was reported across the Atlantic–Mediterranean transition area, where the Almería-Orán Front restricts the gene flow between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean population. Moreover, while population connectivity was suggested between all Mediterranean localities, some substructure was found within the Atlantic group. Canary Islands exhibited a weak but significant genetic differentiation from all Atlantic mainland localities, consistent with the isolation-by-distance pattern detected throughout the Atlantic population. Overall, all these findings provided new insights into the population biology of P. elegans complex.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad; CTM2014-53838-RXunta de Galicia; ED431C 2018/S7Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte; FPU15/0526

Brain Natriuretic Peptide Levels Predict Morbidity and Mortality in Haemodialysis Patients

    Get PDF
Background: Brain natriuretic peptide is a predictor of mortality in multiple cardiovascular diseases but its value in patients with chronic kidney disease is still a matter of debate. Patients and methods: We studied 48 haemodialysis patients with mean age 70.0±13.9 years,62.5% female, 43.8% diabetics, with a mean haemodialysis time of 38.1±29.3 months. To evaluate the role of brain natriuretic peptide as a prognostic factor in this population we performed a two-session evaluation of pre- and postmid-week haemodialysis plasma brain natriuretic peptide concentrations and correlated them with hospitalisation and overall and cardiovascular mortality over a two-year period. Results: There were no significant variations in pre– and post-haemodialysis plasma brain natriuretic peptide concentrations. Pre- and post-haemodialysis brain natriuretic peptide concentrations were significantly greater in patients who died from all causes(p=0.034 and p=0.001, respectively) and from cardiovascular causes (p=0.043 and p=0.001, respectively). Patients who were hospitalised in the two-year study period also presented greater pre- and posthaemodialysis brain natriuretic peptide concentrations(p=0.03 and p=0.036, respectively). Patients with mean brain natriuretic peptide concentrations ≥ 390 pg/mL showed a significantly lower survival at the end of the two-year study period. Conclusion: Brain natriuretic peptide was a good predictor of morbidity and mortality (overall and cardiovascular) in our population

    Antimicrobial effect of intracanal substances

In some situations, endodontic infections do not respond to therapeutic protocol. In these cases, it is suggested the administration of an alternative intracanal medication that presents a wide spectrum of action and has an in-depth effect on the root canal system. The purpose of this study was to assess the antimicrobial action of ciprofloxacin, metronidazole and polyethylene glycol and natrosol vehicles with different associations and concentrations. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by using the agar dilution method. The culture media (Müller-Hinton agar) were prepared containing antimicrobial agents at multiple two-fold dilutions of 0.25 to 16 µg/mL, and with the vehicles at the concentrations of 50, 45, 40, 35, 30 and 25%. Twenty-three microbial strains were selected for the study. Metronidazole was not capable of eliminating any of the tested microorganisms. The association of ciprofloxacin with metronidazole resulted in a reduction of the MIC. The vehicle polyethylene glycol inhibited the growth of 100% of the tested strains, while natrosol inhibited 18% of the strains. Ciprofloxacin formulations with polyethylene glycol presented better effects than those of formulations to which metronidazole was added. It was possible to conclude that ciprofloxacin presented antimicrobial action against all tested bacterial strains, and its association with metronidazole was synergic. The vehicle polyethylene glycol showed antimicrobial effect and the ciprofloxacin/polyethylene glycol association was the most effective combination for reducing the tested bacteria and yeasts
