    Fragility Curves for Thin-Walled Cold-Formed Steel Wall Frames Affected by Ground Settlements Due to Land Subsidence

    Land subsidence phenomenon due to ground water withdrawal is a current problem in many places around the world, particularly in the shallows of Mexico. This causes ground differential settlements that affect structures, mainly dwellings and buildings based on reinforced concrete and masonry. Eventually, these structural materials do not exhibit an adequate performance beyond a certain level of angular distortion. This work presents the results about a study regarding the performance of thin-walled cold-formed steel wall frames with different sheathing systems affected by angular distortions simulating ground differential settlements due to land subsidence. The wall frames are composed by vertical (studs) and horizontal elements (tracks), with different sheathing systems: polystyrene, OSB, gypsum and calcium silicate. By means of experimental testing of wall frames subjected to monotonic lateral loads, the rotational stiffness was obtained for the wall frames with polystyrene. Likewise the rotational stiffness of the other wall frame systems was calculated based on the data provided by other author’s publications. On the other hand, by means of numerical simulation, all the wall frame systems were modeled in structural analysis software, calibrating them based on the rotational stiffness. Also, the moment-rotation curves were calculated for the studs and tracks based on the direct strength method. A non-linear static pull down analysis was performed producing several degrees of angular distortion simulating ground settlements for all the wall frames sheathing systems. With the data acquired fragility curves were calculated according three levels of damage for the wall frames with different sheathing system

    Growth variability and demographic structure of northeast Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) in southern European Atlantic waters

    The Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) is one of the main fishing resources for the fisheries targeting small pelagics in NW African waters. This species is expanding its geographical distribution through higher latitudes in southern European Atlantic waters, and it has become an important fishing resource in Iberian Atlantic waters during the last decades. The present study addresses the growth variability of S. colias in the Iberian waters, from southern Bay of Biscay up to Gulf of Cadiz. Age estimates based on otoliths and growth parameters were obtained from specimens collected within the study area during one decade (from both commercial landings and scientific-acoustic surveys), and sexual growth variation was analysed. A common pattern of abundant cohorts was observed in various areas. However, differences in the demographic structure of the catches were observed among the different areas, with the southernmost area studied (Portuguese and Spanish waters off Gulf of Cadiz) standing out with younger individuals. These new findings are of interest for the stock assessment of S. colias, which has not been addressed in ICES waters so far

    En el proyecto de aplicación profesional de San Pedro de Valencia, otoño 2018 se propuso darle continuidad al proyecto de identidad del Valle de Mazatepec, complementando la información obtenida en el verano 2018 con el proyecto de colorimetría que se generó en la zona. Dicha información se integró al manual de autoconstrucción donde será un método de investigación, al igual que, se implementó la enseñanza del oficio de la construcción, gestionando personas con sentido de propiedad, preocupación por su contexto inmediato y la homogeneización de la zona. Se llevó a cabo la señalética del sendero interpretativo con el colectivo de Selva Negra. El objetivo principal fue implementar un recorrido secuencial informativo, duradero y didáctico, en el cual hubo visitas de campo, levantamiento fotográfico, conceptualización, presupuestos de obra. El trabajo se llevó a cabo mediante 3 equipos: cohesión social, conciencia sobre el medio ambiente y la fomentación del turismo en la zona.ITESO, A.C

    16α‐Bromoepiandrosterone as a new candidate for experimental diabetes‐tuberculosis comorbidity treatment

    Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from a single bacterial infectious agent and is one of the most relevant issues of public health. Another pandemic disease is type II diabetes mellitus (T2D) that is estimated to affect half a billion people in the world. T2D is directly associated with obesity and a sedentary lifestyle and is frequently associated with immunosuppression. Immune dysfunction induced by hyperglycemia increases infection frequency and severity. Thus, in developing countries the T2D/TB co-morbidity is frequent and represents one of the most significant challenges for the health-care systems. Several immunoendocrine abnormalities are occurring during the chronic phase of both diseases, such as high extra-adrenal production of active glucocorticoids (GCs) by the activity of 11-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11-βHSD1). 11-βHSD1 catalyzes the conversion of inactive cortisone to active cortisol or corticosterone in lungs and liver, while 11-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11-βHSD2) has the opposite effect. Active GCs have been related to insulin resistance and suppression of Th1 responses, which are deleterious factors in both T2D and TB. The anabolic adrenal hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) exerts antagonistic effects on GC signaling in immune cells and metabolic tissues; however, its anabolic effects prohibit its use to treat immunoendocrine diseases. 16α-bromoepiandrosterone (BEA) is a water miscible synthetic sterol related to DHEA that lacks an anabolic effect while amplifying the immune and metabolic properties with important potential therapeutic uses. In this work, we compared the expression of 11-βHSD1 and the therapeutic efficacy of BEA in diabetic mice infected with tuberculosis (TB) (T2D/TB) with respect to non-diabetic TB-infected mice (TB). T2D was induced by feeding mice with a high-fat diet and administering a single low-dose of streptozotocin. After 4 weeks of T2D establishment, mice were infected intratracheally with a high-dose of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain H37Rv. Then, mice were treated with BEA three times a week by subcutaneous and intratracheal routes. Infection with TB increased the expression of 11-βHSD1 and corticosterone in the lungs and liver of both T2D/TB and TB mice; however, T2D/TB mice developed a more severe lung disease than TB mice. In comparison with untreated animals, BEA decreased GC and 11-βHSD1 expression while increasing 11-βHSD2 expression. These molecular effects of BEA were associated with a reduction in hyperglycemia and liver steatosis, lower lung bacillary loads and pneumonia.     ¿Qué sabemos de los peces óseos marinos del neógeno en Chile? Diversidad e implicaciones biogeográficas

    Durante el Neógeno ocurren intensos eventos, oceanográficos y climáticos, que influyeron sobre la fauna marina de Chile desde el pasado hasta la actualidad. Estudios enfocados en la evaluación del efecto de estos eventos sobre la diversidad de mamíferos, aves y tiburones han sido previamente abordados. Sin embargo, las interacciones de estos eventos con los peces óseos como grupo de estudio no han sido analizados en detalle. Este trabajo compara la diversidad de peces óseos del Neógeno con la actualidad y da a conocer lo que sabemos de su diversidad. Se procesaron los datos disponibles de la presencia de peces óseos marinos en formaciones neógenas de Chile y la actualidad. Se comparó la composición del registro fósil de peces neógenos con el registro de peces actuales a 3 niveles taxonómicos distintos (familia, género y especie). Finalmente, se analizaron los rangos de distribución de los taxa fósiles que sobrevivieron con el objetivo de realizar aproximaciones de las dinámicas paleobiogeográficas. Nuestros resultados muestran que la diversidad actual de peces óseos marinos en Chile es de 624 géneros (1.196 especies), mientras que para el Neógeno se han reportado 65 géneros (46 especies). Comparado con la diversidad actual, el registro fósil de peces es representado por un 3,9% a nivel de especie, 10,4% a nivel de género y 23,4% a nivel de familias, lo que puede ser relacionado con la baja cantidad de estudios enfocados en fósiles de este grupo. Del total de 46 especies fósiles reportadas, sólo una se encuentra actualmente presente en las costas de Chile. A nivel genérico, un 38,5% se encuentra actualmente ausente en la región y un 61,5% sobrevive. En relación a los géneros ausentes actualmente, un 20% corresponde a extinción global y un 80% a extinción regional. Estos cambios en las dinámicas biogeográficas de peces óseos del pasado al reciente, podrían estar relacionadas con los intensos eventos climáticos y oceanográficos que han ocurrido en los últimos 23 millones de años. Los análisis de rarefacción y de extrapolación de especies confirman que a pesar de que han aumentado los trabajos sobre peces óseos en los últimos años, todavía se podrían encontrar un mayor número de taxa si se aplica un mayor esfuerzo de muestreo. Estudios futuros podrían ayudarnos a comprender de mejor manera el efecto de los cambios climáticos y oceanográficos sobre los peces del Neógeno de Chile.Durant el Neogen ocorren intensos esdeveniments, oceanogràfics, i climàtics, que van influir sobre la fauna marina de Xile des del passat fins a l’actualitat. Estudis enfocats en l’avaluació de l’efecte d’aquests esdeveniments sobre la diversitat de mamífers, ocells i taurons han sigut prèviament abordats. No obstant això, les interaccions d’aquests esdeveniments amb els peixos ossis com a grup d’estudi no han sigut analitzats detalladament. Aquest treball analitza la diversitat de peixos ossis del Neogen comparat amb l’actualitat i dona a conéixer que sabem de la seua diversitat. Es van analizar les dades disponibles de la presència de peixos ossis marins en formacions neógenas de Xile i l’actualitat. Es va comparar la composició del registre fòssil de peixos neògens amb el registre de peixos actuals a 3 nivells taxonòmics diferents (família, gènere i espècie). Finalment, es van analizar els rangs de distribució dels taxa fòssils que van sobreviure amb la finalitat de realitzar aproximacions de les dinàmiques paleobiogeográficas. Aquests canvis en les dinàmiques biogeogràfiques de peixos ossis del passat al recent, podrien estar relacionades amb els intensos esdeveniments climàtics i oceanogràfics que han ocorregut en els últims 23 milions d’anys. Les anàlisis de rarefacció i d’extrapolació d’espècies confirmen que a pesar que han augmentat els treballs sobre el grup en els últims anys, encara es podrien trobar un major número de taxa si s’aplica un major esforç de mostreig. Estudis futurs podrien ajudar-nos a comprendre de millor manera l’efecte dels canvis climàtics i oceanogràfics sobre els peixos del Neogen de Xile.During the Neogene occurred intense oceanographic and climatic events which had an effect on the marine fauna from the past to the present. Studies focused on the evaluation of the effect of these events on the diversity of mammals, birds and sharks have been previously addressed. However, the interactions of these events with bony fishes as a study group have not been analyzed in detail. This work analyzes the diversity of bony fishes from the Neogene compared to today and reveals what we know about their diversity. We analyzed the available data on the presence of marine bony fishes from Neogene formations in Chile and today. The composition of the fossil record of Neogene fishes was compared to the current fish record at 3 different taxonomic levels (family, genus, and species). Lastly, the distribution ranges of the surviving fossil taxa were analyzed in order to make approximations of the paleobiogeographic dynamics. Our results show that the current diversity of marine bony fish in Chile is composed of 624 genera (1,196 species), whereas from the Neogene 65 genera (46 species) have been reported. Compared to the current diversity, the fossil record of fishes is represented by 3.9% at the species level, 10.4% at the genus level and 23.4% at the family level, which can be related to the low number of studies focused on fossils of this group. Of the total of 46 fossil species reported, only 4% is currently present along the coast of Chile. At a generic level, 38.5% are currently absent in the region whereas 61.5% survived. In relation to the genera currently absent in the region, 20% are globally extinct and 80% regional extinct. These changes in the biogeographic dynamics of bony fishes from the past to the recent could be related to the intense climatic and oceanographic events that have occurred in the last 23 million years. The rarefaction and extrapolation analyses confirm that although the studies focused on the group have increased in the last years, a higher number of taxa could still be found if the sampling effort is increased. Future studies could help us to a better understanding of the effects of climatic and oceanographic changes on the group during the Neogene of Chile

    Acute Variceal Bleeding: Does Octreotide Improve Outcomes in Patients with Different Functional Hepatic Reserve?

    Background. Current guidelines do not differentiate in the utilization of vasoactive drugs in patients with cirrhosis and acute variceal bleeding (AVB) depending on liver disease severity. Material and methods. In this retrospective study, clinical outcomes in 100 patients receiving octreotide plus endoscopic therapy (ET) and 216 patients with ET alone were compared in terms of failure to control bleeding, in-hospital mortality, and transfusion requirements stratifying the results according to liver disease severity by Child-Pugh (CP) score and MELD. Results. In patients with CP-A or those with MELD < 10 octreotide was not associated with a better outcome compared to ET alone in terms of hospital mortality (CP-A: 0.0 vs. 0.0%; MELD < 10: 0.0 vs. 2.9%, p = 1.00), failure to control bleeding (CP-A: 8.7 vs. 3.7%, p = 0.58; MELD < 10: 5.3 vs. 4.3%, p = 1.00) and need for transfusion (CP-A: 39.1 vs. 61.1%, p = 0.09; MELD < 10: 63.2 vs. 62.9%, p = 1.00). Those with severe liver dysfunction in the octreotide group showed better outcomes compared to the non-octreotide group in terms of hospital mortality (CP-B/C: 3.9 vs. 13.0%, p = 0.04; MEL
