    An avalanche index for roads

    Several methods have been introduced through the years to evaluate avalanche risk along road sections. In 1988, Peter Schaerer introduced Avalanche Hazard Index, a numerical expression of damage and loss as the result of an interaction between snow avalanches and vehicles on a road. Later works by different authors have developed the methodology for risk management and winter road opening of high alpine pass roads. This project is a spin-off of a project conducted by ORlON Consulting for the Icelandic Road Authority. This project describes a simple method to evaluate possible consequences of an avalanche hitting a passing vehicle on a road section. Besides the size, intensity and frequency of avalanches, the severity of the consequences is related to several environmental factors such as the distance from the road body to potentiaIly dangerous terrain features. Such factors may include cliffs and steep banks along fjords, as weIl as steep slopes above the road. In addition, the consequences of an encounter between a vehicle and an avalanche may depend on the probability of a speedy rescue. The factors used are quantified on a scale from 0-5, where the lower values are given the worse case and higher values the more favourable. Test results show that this procedure gives other results than a preliminary assessment suggests in some cases. At a specific avalanche threatened stretch of road site in northern Iceland, a different avalanche path received a higher index value than the one that initiaIly was considered the worst.publishedVersio

    Impaired vascular responses to parasympathetic nerve stimulation and muscarinic receptor activation in the submandibular gland in non-obese diabetic mice

    Introduction Decreased vascular responses to salivary gland stimulation are observed in Sjögren's syndrome patients. We investigate whether impaired vascular responses to parasympathetic stimulation and muscarinic receptor activation in salivary glands parallels hyposalivation in an experimental model for Sjögren's syndrome. Methods Blood flow responses in the salivary glands were measured by laser Doppler flowmeter. Muscarinic receptor activation was followed by saliva secretion measurements. Nitric oxide synthesis-mediated blood flow responses were studied after administration of a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor. Glandular autonomic nerves and muscarinic 3 receptor distributions were also investigated. Results Maximal blood flow responses to parasympathetic stimulation and muscarinic receptor activation were significantly lower in nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice compared with BALB/ c mice, coinciding with impaired saliva secretion in nonobese diabetic mice (P < 0.005). Nitric oxide synthase inhibitor had less effect on blood flow responses after parasympathetic nerve stimulation in nonobese diabetic mice compared with BALB/c mice (P < 0.02). In nonobese diabetic mice, salivary gland parasympathetic nerve fibres were absent in areas of focal infiltrates. Muscarinic 3 receptor might be localized in the blood vessel walls of salivary glands. Conclusions Impaired vasodilatation in response to parasympathetic nerve stimulation and muscarinic receptor activation may contribute to hyposalivation observed in nonobese diabetic mice. Reduced nitric oxide signalling after parasympathetic nerve stimulation may contribute in part to the impaired blood flow responses. The possibility of muscarinic 3 receptor in the vasculature supports the notion that muscarinic 3 receptor autoantibodies present in nonobese diabetic mice might impair the fluid transport required for salivation. Parasympathetic nerves were absent in areas of focal infiltrates, whereas a normal distribution was found within glandular epithelium.publishedVersio

    Spared, shared and lost—routes for maintaining the Scandinavian Mountain foothill intact forest landscapes

    Intact forest landscapes harbor significant biodiversity values and pools of ecosystem services essential for conservation, land use and rural development. Threatened by fragmentation and loss by transitions to industrial clear-cut forestry, those landscapes are of pivotal interest for protection that secures their intact character. With wall-to-wall land-cover data, we explored opportunities for maintaining intact forest landscapes through comprehensive spatial planning across a 2.5 million hectares boreal to sub-alpine forest region along the eastern slopes of the Scandinavian Mountain range. We analyzed forest and woodland types that are protected, need protection or potentially can be subject to continued forest management. We established that the fraction of already clear-cut forest is very small and that the forest landscape of the Scandinavian Mountain foothills contains a high proportion of protected high conservation value forests, covering almost 2 million ha, and that over 500,000 ha (27%) remains unprotected and may be subject to future protection or continued adapted forest management. We found evident north to south differences with respect to forest landscape configuration, distribution of unprotected forests and land ownership. With a focus on non-industrial private landowners, we conclude that sustainable land-use requires integrative, multi-functional approaches that rely on further protection, forest, and forest landscape restoration and a much larger share of continuous cover forestry than presently. Our results provide input into ongoing policy implementation and green infrastructure planning in the context of securing intact forest values and integrative opportunities for rural livelihood and regional development based on multiple value chains.publishedVersio

    Challenges of transformation of research data into open data : The perspective of social sciences and humanities

    The authors address the transformation of research data into open data. The article draws on the experience in four countries: Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Lithuania. The transformation process presents several challenges where legal, organizational and individual aspects influence the process. Research data often contain personal data. Research data could also be covered with intellectual property (IP) rights. This means that personal data and IP regulations should be integrated into the dissemination model. While there is a potential conflict between the policies for open data that aim to make data freely available and those of an entrepreneurial university that emphasize commercialization of research results, these policies need to be made compatible. Researchers producing data are vital for reconciling the two, but they currently lack the motivation to contribute towards the implementation of the open data policy due to missing career incentives.Peer reviewe
