    Fail-safe system for activity cooled supersonic and hypersonic aircraft

    A fail-safe-system concept was studied as an alternative to a redundant active cooling system for supersonic and hypersonic aircraft which use the heat sink of liquid-hydrogen fuel for cooling the aircraft structure. This concept consists of an abort maneuver by the aircraft and a passive thermal protection system (TPS) for the aircraft skin. The abort manuever provides a low-heat-load descent from normal cruise speed to a lower speed at which cooling is unnecessary, and the passive TPS allows the aircraft skin to absorb the abort heat load without exceeding critical skin temperature. On the basis of results obtained, it appears that this fail-safe-system concept warrants further consideration, inasmuch as a fail-safe system could possibly replace a redundant active cooling system with no increase in weight and would offer other potential advantages

    ‘Tackling’ rugby safety through a collective approach

    Commitment to seeking an evidence-informed approachWhen it comes to player welfare, Rugby Union governing bodies have committed to seeking and funding an evidence-informed approach. This involves using research to make informed decisions about policy, laws and injury prevention programmes. Over the last decade, a growing body of research has informed player safety, for example, modifications to scrum laws to reduce catastrophic head and neck injuries.1 However, major gaps remain, including tackle research focusing on the women’s game.2A socioecological perspectiveIt is well understood that player welfare, specifically injury prevention, is a complex issue. To effectively address these complexities and make a long-term impact requires a dynamic socioecological approach.3 ,4 An athlete operates within a socioecological structure (individual, interpersonal, organisational, community) that is influenced by a web of inter-related factors and actors, both of which change over time and/or when a factor/actor is modified (figure 1). Typically, injury prevention research will identify player level factors that influence injury risk (risk factors), and aim to modify these factors through behaviour change interventions. However, the socioecological view emphasises understanding contextual factors influencing implementation of such modifications. For example, if the behaviour intervention is a training programme, how much time is available to implement the training programme? Or, is the training programme appropriate for all sexes

    A quasi-experimental evaluation of dried blood spot testing through community pharmacies in the Tayside region of Scotland

    Objective Comparison of uptake of dried blood spot testing (DBST) for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection between community pharmacies and established services.  Design Quantitative evaluation of a service development with qualitative process evaluation undertaken in parallel.  Setting Six pharmacies from 36 community pharmacies within Dundee City, a large urban settlement with high levels of socioeconomic deprivation.  Participants Patients in receipt of opioid substitution therapy (OST) not tested for HCV within 12 months. The 6 pharmacies provided OST for approximately 363 patients from a cohort of 1385 patients within Dundee City.  Intervention Provision of DBST by pharmacists.  Main outcome measure Receipt of DBST between January and December 2014.  Results 43 of 143 service users with no record of testing from the 6 community pharmacies accepted DBST. Of 561 from the remaining 1022 service users with no record of testing, 75 were tested for HCV (30% vs 13%). The OR for increased uptake of testing within the 6 pharmacies was 2.25 (95% CI 1.48 to 3.41, Z statistic=3.81, p=<0.0001) compared with other services. The DBST taken by the pharmacies provided 12 patients with a reactive test. The process evaluation identified key themes important to staff and recipients of the service. A logic model was constructed.  Limitations Non-experimental service evaluation performed in community pharmacies records service activity in one location across a single time period.  Interpretation Some evidence that DBST from community pharmacies may be feasible. Service users received the service positively. Staff reported that DBST was straightforward and achievable

    Accuracy of Quantum Monte Carlo Methods for Point Defects in Solids

    Quantum Monte Carlo approaches such as the diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method are among the most accurate many-body methods for extended systems. Their scaling makes them well suited for defect calculations in solids. We review the various approximations needed for DMC calculations of solids and the results of previous DMC calculations for point defects in solids. Finally, we present estimates of how approximations affect the accuracy of calculations for self-interstitial formation energies in silicon and predict DMC values of 4.4(1), 5.1(1) and 4.7(1) eV for the X, T and H interstitial defects, respectively, in a 16(+1)-atom supercell

    'Reaching the hard to reach' - lessons learned from the VCS (voluntary and community Sector). A qualitative study.

    Background The notion 'hard to reach' is a contested and ambiguous term that is commonly used within the spheres of social care and health, especially in discourse around health and social inequalities. There is a need to address health inequalities and to engage in services the marginalized and socially excluded sectors of society. Methods This paper describes a pilot study involving interviews with representatives from eight Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations . The purpose of the study was to explore the notion of 'hard to reach' and perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to accessing services for 'hard to reach' groups from a voluntary and community sector perspective. Results The 'hard to reach' may include drug users, people living with HIV, people from sexual minority communities, asylum seekers, refugees, people from black and ethnic minority communities, and homeless people although defining the notion of the 'hard to reach' is not straight forward. It may be that certain groups resist engaging in treatment services and are deemed hard to reach by a particular service or from a societal stance. There are a number of potential barriers for people who may try and access services, including people having bad experiences in the past; location and opening times of services and how services are funded and managed. A number of areas of commonality are found in terms of how access to services for 'hard to reach' individuals and groups could be improved including: respectful treatment of service users, establishing trust with service users, offering service flexibility, partnership working with other organisations and harnessing service user involvement. Conclusions: If health services are to engage with groups that are deemed 'hard to reach' and marginalised from mainstream health services, the experiences and practices for engagement from within the VCS may serve as useful lessons for service improvement for statutory health services

    DSAP: deep-sequencing small RNA analysis pipeline

    DSAP is an automated multiple-task web service designed to provide a total solution to analyzing deep-sequencing small RNA datasets generated by next-generation sequencing technology. DSAP uses a tab-delimited file as an input format, which holds the unique sequence reads (tags) and their corresponding number of copies generated by the Solexa sequencing platform. The input data will go through four analysis steps in DSAP: (i) cleanup: removal of adaptors and poly-A/T/C/G/N nucleotides; (ii) clustering: grouping of cleaned sequence tags into unique sequence clusters; (iii) non-coding RNA (ncRNA) matching: sequence homology mapping against a transcribed sequence library from the ncRNA database Rfam (http://rfam.sanger.ac.uk/); and (iv) known miRNA matching: detection of known miRNAs in miRBase (http://www.mirbase.org/) based on sequence homology. The expression levels corresponding to matched ncRNAs and miRNAs are summarized in multi-color clickable bar charts linked to external databases. DSAP is also capable of displaying miRNA expression levels from different jobs using a log2-scaled color matrix. Furthermore, a cross-species comparative function is also provided to show the distribution of identified miRNAs in different species as deposited in miRBase.     Hyperoxia speeds pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics and increases critical power during supine cycling

    The present study determined the impact of hyperoxia on the phase II time constant of pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics (τ_V ̇ O2) and critical power (CP) during supine cycle exercise. 8 healthy males completed an incremental test to determine maximal oxygen uptake and the gas exchange threshold (GET). Eight separate visits followed, whereby CP, τ_V ̇ O2 and absolute concentrations of oxyhaemoglobin ([HbO2]; via near-infrared spectroscopy) were determined via four constant-power tests to exhaustion, each repeated once in normoxia and once in hyperoxia (FiO2 = 0.5). A 6-minute bout of moderate intensity exercise (70% GET) was also undertaken prior to each severe intensity bout, in both conditions. CP was greater (hyperoxia = 148 ± 29 W vs. normoxia = 134 ± 27 W, P = 0.006) and the τ_V ̇ O2 was reduced (hyperoxia = 33 ± 12 s vs. normoxia = 52 ± 22 s, P = 0.007) during severe exercise in hyperoxia when compared to normoxia. Furthermore, [HbO2] was enhanced in hyperoxia compared to normoxia (hyperoxia: 67 ± 10 versus normoxia: 63 ± 11 μM; P = 0.020). τ_V ̇ O2 was significantly related to CP in hyperoxia (r = 0.89, P < 0.001), however no relationship was observed in normoxia (r = 0.03, P = 0.68). Muscle oxygenation was increased, τ_V ̇ O2 was reduced and CP was increased in hyperoxia compared to normoxia, suggesting that τ_V ̇ O2 is an independent determinant of CP. That τ_V ̇ O2 was related to CP in hyperoxia but not normoxia further supports this notion

    Multimodel Ensembles of Wheat Growth: More Models are Better than One

    Crop models of crop growth are increasingly used to quantify the impact of global changes due to climate or crop management. Therefore, accuracy of simulation results is a major concern. Studies with ensembles of crop models can give valuable information about model accuracy and uncertainty, but such studies are difficult to organize and have only recently begun. We report on the largest ensemble study to date, of 27 wheat models tested in four contrasting locations for their accuracy in simulating multiple crop growth and yield variables. The relative error averaged over models was 24-38% for the different end-of-season variables including grain yield (GY) and grain protein concentration (GPC). There was little relation between error of a model for GY or GPC and error for in-season variables. Thus, most models did not arrive at accurate simulations of GY and GPC by accurately simulating preceding growth dynamics. Ensemble simulations, taking either the mean (e-mean) or median (e-median) of simulated values, gave better estimates than any individual model when all variables were considered. Compared to individual models, e-median ranked first in simulating measured GY and third in GPC. The error of e-mean and e-median declined with an increasing number of ensemble members, with little decrease beyond 10 models. We conclude that multimodel ensembles can be used to create new estimators with improved accuracy and consistency in simulating growth dynamics. We argue that these results are applicable to other crop species, and hypothesize that they apply more generally to ecological system models
