    Quantum error correction of systematic errors using a quantum search framework

    Composite pulses are a quantum control technique for canceling out systematic control errors. We present a new composite pulse sequence inspired by quantum search. Our technique can correct a wider variety of systematic errors -- including, for example, nonlinear over-rotational errors -- than previous techniques. Concatenation of the pulse sequence can reduce a systematic error to an arbitrarily small level.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

    Control theory for principled heap sizing

    We propose a new, principled approach to adaptive heap sizing based on control theory. We review current state-of-the-art heap sizing mechanisms, as deployed in Jikes RVM and HotSpot. We then formulate heap sizing as a control problem, apply and tune a standard controller algorithm, and evaluate its performance on a set of well-known benchmarks. We find our controller adapts the heap size more responsively than existing mechanisms. This responsiveness allows tighter virtual machine memory footprints while preserving target application throughput, which is ideal for both embedded and utility computing domains. In short, we argue that formal, systematic approaches to memory management should be replacing ad-hoc heuristics as the discipline matures.     A four-season study quantifying the weekly external training loads during different between match microcycle lengths in professional rugby league

    This study investigated differences in external training load between microcycle lengths and its variation between microcycles, players, and head coaches. Commonly used external training load variables including total-, high-speed- (5–7 m·s -1), and sprint-distance (&gt; 7 m·s -1) alongside combined high acceleration and deceleration distance (&gt; 2 m·s -2). Which were also expressed relative to time were collected using microtechnology within a repeated measures design from 54 male rugby league players from one Super League team over four seasons. 4337 individual observations across ninety-one separate microcycles and six individual microcycle lengths (5 to 10 day) were included. Linear mixed effects models established the differences in training load between microcycle-length and the variation between-microcycles, players and head coaches. The largest magnitude of difference in training load was seen when comparing 5-day with 9-day (ES = 0.31 to 0.53) and 10-day (ES = 0.19 to 0.66) microcycles. The greatest number of differences between microcycles were observed in high- (ES = 0.3 to 0.53) and sprint-speed (ES = 0.2 to 0.42) variables. Between-microcycle variability ranged between 11% to 35% dependent on training load variable. Training load also varied between players (5–65%) and head coaches (6–20%) with most variability existing within high-speed (19–43%) and sprinting (19–65%). Overall, differences in training load between microcycle lengths exist, likely due to manipulation of session duration. Furthermore, training load varies between microcycle, player and head coach.</p

    Conical defects in growing sheets

    A growing or shrinking disc will adopt a conical shape, its intrinsic geometry characterized by a surplus angle sese at the apex. If growth is slow, the cone will find its equilibrium. Whereas this is trivial if se<=0se <= 0, the disc can fold into one of a discrete infinite number of states if sese is positive. We construct these states in the regime where bending dominates, determine their energies and how stress is distributed in them. For each state a critical value of sese is identified beyond which the cone touches itself.     Identifying prognostic structural features in tissue sections of colon cancer patients using point pattern analysis

    Diagnosis and prognosis of cancer is informed by the architecture inherent in cancer patient tissue sections. This architecture is typically identified by pathologists, yet advances in computational image analysis facilitate quantitative assessment of this structure. In this article we develop a spatial point process approach in order to describe patterns in cell distribution within tissue samples taken from colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. In particular, our approach is centered on the Palm intensity function. This leads to taking an approximate-likelihood technique in fitting point processes models. We consider two Neyman-Scott point processes and a void process, fitting these point process models to the CRC patient data. We find that the parameter estimates of these models may be used to quantify the spatial arrangement of cells. Importantly, we observe characteristic differences in the spatial arrangement of cells between patients who died from CRC and those alive at follow-up

    A fossil galaxy cluster; an X-ray and optical study of RX J1416.4+2315

    We present a detailed X-ray and optical study of a distant fossil system RX J1416.4+2315 (z=0.13), combining Chandra and XMM-Newton observations, optical photometry and spectroscopy. X-ray emitting hot gas imaged by both the Chandra and XMM-Newton shows a globally relaxed spatial distribution, supporting the idea that fossil groups are old galaxy systems with no recent mergers. However, the diffuse X-ray emission shows signs of asymmetries in the core of the system. With a mean gas temperature of ~ 4.0 keV and total gravitational mass of 3.1 x 10^14 solar mass, within the virial radius, this is better described as a fossil galaxy cluster rather than a fossil group. The temperature profile shows no sign of a significant cooler core despite a cooling time dropping to 5 Gyr within the resolved core. We find a mass concentration parameter c_200 ~ 11 which is relatively high for a cluster of this mass, indicative of an early formation epoch. Using the spectroscopically identified cluster members we present the galaxy luminosity function for this fossil system. We measure the velocity dispersion of the galaxies to be ~ 700 km/s based on 18 confirmed members. The dynamical mass is nearly twice the total gravitational mass derived from the X-ray analysis. The measured R-band mass-to-light ratio, within the virial radius, is ~ 440 M/L (solar) which is not unusual for clusters of galaxies. The central giant elliptical galaxy has discy isophotes and spectral features typical of elliptical galaxies.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Combined stable isotope and gut contents analysis of food webs in plant-dominated, shallow lakes

To determine feeding links between primary producers, invertebrates and fish, stable isotope analyses and gut content analyses of fish were conducted on the components of four shallow, eutrophic to hypertrophic, plant-dominated lakes. 2. Although separation of basal resources was possible, the diets of both fish and invertebrates were broad, comprising food from different compartments (planktonic, epiphytic/benthic), as well as from different trophic levels. 3. Mixing models were used to determine the extent to which periphyton production supported higher trophic levels. Only one species of invertebrate relied upon periphyton production exclusively. 4. Fish density affected the diets of invertebrates. The response was different for planktonic and epiphytic/benthic invertebrates. The proportion of periphyton production in the diets of zooplankton appeared to increase with fish density, whilst it decreased for other invertebrates. 5. As all zooplankton samples were collected in the open water at dusk, these results are further evidence for the diurnal horizontal migration of zooplankton. Although not conclusive, they are consistent with a behavioural response by invertebrates and zooplankton in the presence of fish

    Aims/Objectives: Compare GEP assay prediction of 434 melanocytic lesions with dermatopathologist interpretation. Methods: Sensitivity and specificity of assay were calculated based on disagreement of assay prediction with dermatopathologist interpretation. Histologic features were recorded in disagreeing cases. Results: Eighty-five percent of lesions (369/434) had sufficient RNA for scoring. 74.2% 274/369 lesions were classified as “benign”, 11.9% (44/369) “indeterminate”, and 13.8% (51/369) “malignant”. 38/51 of lesions rendered “malignant” by dermatopathologists were classified “malignant” by assay (sensitivity = 74.5%). Lesions rendered by assay as “benign” but “malignant” by dermatopathologists were more likely to have rarer cytologic features. (13/51) lesions rendered “malignant” by dermatopathologists were classified by assay as “benign,” (4/13) or “indeterminate” (9/13). 270/318 lesions rendered “benign” by dermatopathologists were “benign” by assay (specificity = 84.9%).     [Context and Motivation] Development of innovative ICT-based applications is a complex process involving collaboration of all relevant disciplines. This complexity arises due to differences in terminology, knowledge and often also the ways of working between developers in the disciplines involved. [Question/problem] Advances in each discipline bring a rich design environment of theories, models, methods and techniques. Making a selection from these makes the development of distributed applications very challenging, often requiring a holistic approach to address the needs of the disciplines involved. This paper describes early stage requirements acquisition of a mobile nutrition education demonstrator which supports overweight persons in adopting healthier dietary behaviour. [Principal idea/results] We present a novel way to combine and use known requirements acquisition methods involving a two stage user needs analysis based on scenarios which apply a theory-based model of behavioural change and are onstructed in two phases. The first phase scenarios specify an indicative description reflecting the use of the transtheoretical model of behavioural change. In the second phase, a handshake protocol adds elements of optative system-oriented descriptions to the scenarios such that the intended system can support the indicative description. [Contribution] The holistic and phased approach separates design concerns to which each of the disciplines contributes with their own expertise and domain principles. It preserves the applied domain principles in the design and it bridges gaps in terminology, knowledge and ways of working
