Decoupled cantilever arms for highly versatile and sensitive temperature and heat flux measurements
Microfabricated cantilever beams have been used in microelectromechanical systems for a variety of sensor and actuator applications. Bimorph cantilevers accurately measure temperature change and heat flux with resolutions several orders of magnitude higher than those of conventional sensors such as thermocouples, semiconductor diodes, as well as resistance and infrared thermometers. The use of traditional cantilevers, however, entails a series of important measurement limitations, because their interactions with the sample and surroundings often create parasitic deflection forces and the typical metal layer degrades the thermal sensitivity of the cantilever. The paper introduces a design to address these issues by decoupling the sample and detector section of the cantilever, along with a thermomechanical model, the fabrication, system integration, and characterization. The custom-designed bi-arm cantilever is over one order of magnitude more sensitive than current commercial cantilevers due to the significantly reduced thermal conductance of the cantilever sample arm. The rigid and immobile sample section offers measurement versatility ranging from photothermal absorption, near-field thermal radiation down to contact, conduction, and material thermal characterization measurements in nearly identical configurations.United States. Variability of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation utilization for refractory adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: an international survey study.
Objective: A growing interest in extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) as a rescue strategy for refractory adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) currently exists. This study aims to determine current standards of care and practice variation for ECPR patients in the USA and Korea.
Methods: In December 2015, we surveyed centers from the Korean Hypothermia Network (KORHN) Investigators and the US National Post-Arrest Research Consortium (NPARC) on current targeted temperature management and ECPR practices. This project analyzes the subsection of questions addressing ECPR practices. We summarized survey.
Results: Overall, 9 KORHN and 4 NPARC centers reported having ECPR programs and had complete survey data available. Two KORHN centers utilized extracorporeal membrane oxygenation only for postarrest circulatory support in patients with refractory shock and were excluded from further analysis. Centers with available ECPR generally saw a high volume of OHCA patients (10/11 centers care for \u3e75 OHCA a year). Location of, and providers trained for cannulation varied across centers. All centers in both countries (KORHN 7/7, NPARC 4/4) treated comatose ECPR patients with targeted temperature management. All NPARC centers and four of seven KORHN centers reported having a standardized hospital protocol for ECPR. Upper age cutoff for eligibility ranged from 60 to 75 years. No absolute contraindications were unanimous among centers.
Conclusion: A wide variability in practice patterns exist between centers performing ECPR for refractory OHCA in the US and Korea. Standardized protocols and shared research databases might inform best practices, improve outcomes, and provide a foundation for prospective studies
Conjugated dendrimers: A modular approach to materials for full colour displays
Conjugated dendrimers provide an excellent molecular architecture for tuning material properties for organic light emitting diodes. Here we demonstrate a modular approach allowing highly efficient fluorescent and phosphorescent emissive chromophores to be used to make red, green and blue solution-processed light emitting diodes. The choice of a common dendritic architecture ensures good solubility and film forming properties irrespective of the choice of core unit. In addition, this architecture allows blending of dendrimers with different cores without phase separation. We show that blending provides a simple but powerful way of tuning the colour of dendrimer LEDs from deep blue to blue-green, and from green to red with little impact on the device properties
Expression of human ficolin-2 in hepatocytes confers resistance to infection by diverse hepatotropic viruses
The liver-expressed pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) mannose binding lectin (MBL), ficolin-2 and ficolin-3 contribute to the innate immune response by activating complement. Binding of soluble ficolin-2 to viral pathogens can directly neutralize virus entry. We observed that the human hepatoma cell line HuH7.5, which is routinely used for the study of hepatotropic viruses, is deficient in expression of MBL, ficolin-2 and ficolin-3. We generated a cell line that expressed and secreted ficolin-2. This cell line (HuH7.5 [FCN2]) was more resistant to infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV), ebolavirus (EBOV) and vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), but surprisingly was more susceptible to infection with rabies virus (RABV). Cell-to-cell spread of HCV was also inhibited in ficolin-2 expressing cells. This illustrates that ficolin-2 expression in hepatocytes contributes to innate resistance to virus infection, but some viruses might utilise ficolin-2 to facilitate entry
Same-sign W pair production as a probe of double parton scattering at the LHC
We study the production of same-sign W boson pairs at the LHC in double
parton interactions. Compared with simple factorised double parton
distributions (dPDFs), we show that the recently developed dPDFs, GS09, lead to
non-trivial kinematic correlations between the W bosons. A numerical study of
the prospects for observing this process using same-sign dilepton signatures,
including same-sign WWjj, di-boson and heavy flavour backgrounds, at 14 TeV
centre-of-mass energy is then performed. It is shown that a small excess of
same-sign dilepton events from double parton scattering over a background
dominated by single scattering WZ(gamma*) production could be observed at the
LHC.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Added references, slight changes in the text
Three red suns in the sky: A transiting, terrestrial planet in a triple M-dwarf system at 6.9 pc
We present the discovery from Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data of LTT 1445Ab. At a distance of 6.9 pc, it is the second nearest transiting exoplanet system found to date, and the closest one known for which the primary is an M dwarf. The host stellar system consists of three mid-to-late M dwarfs in a hierarchical configuration, which are blended in one TESS pixel. We use MEarth data and results from the Science Processing Operations Center data validation report to determine that the planet transits the primary star in the system. The planet has a radius of , an orbital period of days, and an equilibrium temperature of K. With radial velocities from the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, we place a 3Ï upper mass limit of 8.4 on the planet. LTT 1445Ab provides one of the best opportunities to date for the spectroscopic study of the atmosphere of a terrestrial world. We also present a detailed characterization of the host stellar system. We use high-resolution spectroscopy and imaging to rule out the presence of any other close stellar or brown dwarf companions. Nineteen years of photometric monitoring of A and BC indicate a moderate amount of variability, in agreement with that observed in the TESS light-curve data. We derive a preliminary astrometric orbit for the BC pair that reveals an edge-on and eccentric configuration. The presence of a transiting planet in this system hints that the entire system may be co-planar, implying that the system may have formed from the early fragmentation of an individual protostellar core.Accepted manuscrip
Controlling crystallization and its absence: Proteins, colloids and patchy models
The ability to control the crystallization behaviour (including its absence)
of particles, be they biomolecules such as globular proteins, inorganic
colloids, nanoparticles, or metal atoms in an alloy, is of both fundamental and
technological importance. Much can be learnt from the exquisite control that
biological systems exert over the behaviour of proteins, where protein
crystallization and aggregation are generally suppressed, but where in
particular instances complex crystalline assemblies can be formed that have a
functional purpose. We also explore the insights that can be obtained from
computational modelling, focussing on the subtle interplay between the
interparticle interactions, the preferred local order and the resulting
crystallization kinetics. In particular, we highlight the role played by
``frustration'', where there is an incompatibility between the preferred local
order and the global crystalline order, using examples from atomic glass
formers and model anisotropic particles.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 Early Release Science: Emission-Line Galaxies from Infrared Grism Observations
We present grism spectra of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) from 0.6-1.6
microns from the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope. These new
infrared grism data augment previous optical Advanced Camera for Surveys G800L
0.6-0.95 micron grism data in GOODS-South from the PEARS program, extending the
wavelength covereage well past the G800L red cutoff. The ERS grism field was
observed at a depth of 2 orbits per grism, yielding spectra of hundreds of
faint objects, a subset of which are presented here. ELGs are studied via the
Ha, [OIII], and [OII] emission lines detected in the redshift ranges 0.2<z<1.4,
1.2<z<2.2 and 2.0<z<3.3 respectively in the G102 (0.8-1.1 microns; R~210) and
G141 (1.1-1.6 microns; R~130) grisms. The higher spectral resolution afforded
by the WFC3 grisms also reveals emission lines not detectable with the G800L
grism (e.g., [SII] and [SIII] lines). From these relatively shallow
observations, line luminosities, star-formation rates, and grism spectroscopic
redshifts are determined for a total of 48 ELGs to m(AB)~25 mag. Seventeen
GOODS-South galaxies that previously only had photometric redshifts now have
new grism-spectroscopic redshifts, in some cases with large corrections to the
photometric redshifts (Delta(z)~0.3-0.5). Additionally, one galaxy had no
previously-measured redshift but now has a secure grism-spectroscopic redshift,
for a total of 18 new GOODS-South spectroscopic redshifts. The faintest source
in our sample has a magnitude m(AB)=26.9 mag. The ERS grism data also reflect
the expected trend of lower specific star formation rates for the highest mass
galaxies in the sample as a function of redshift, consistent with downsizing
and discovered previously from large surveys. These results demonstrate the
remarkable efficiency and capability of the WFC3 NIR grisms for measuring
galaxy properties to faint magnitudes and redshifts to z>2.Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. Updated to include referee comments.

Charge transport in highly efficient iridium cored electrophosphorescent dendrimers
Electrophosphorescent dendrimers are promising materials for highly efficient light-emitting diodes. They consist of a phosphorescent core onto which dendritic groups are attached. Here, we present an investigation into the optical and electronic properties of highly efficient phosphorescent dendrimers. The effect of dendrimer structure on charge transport and optical properties is studied using temperature-dependent charge-generation-layer time-of-flight measurements and current voltage (I-V) analysis. A model is used to explain trends seen in the I-V characteristics. We demonstrate that fine tuning the mobility by chemical structure is possible in these dendrimers and show that this can lead to highly efficient bilayer dendrimer light-emitting diodes with neat emissive layers. Power efficiencies of 20 lm/W were measured for devices containing a second-generation (G2) Ir(ppy)(3) dendrimer with a 1,3,5-tris(2-N-phenylbenzimidazolyl)benzene electron transport layer.
